Christine: Im okay.
Rosa: What are you doing here? I thought you didnt have to go to college anymore.
Christine: I do volunteer work for the college paper, so I need to come here once in a while.
Rosa: Really? I noticed its very common for Americans to do volunteer work during
their college years.
Christine: It is! Its a cultural tradition.
Rosa: Yes, and yesterday Betsy invited me to do volunteer work at the International
Students Center. She goes there on Thursday afternoons.
Christine: Thats great! But what about you? Isnt today your day off?
Rosa: I dont have to attend any classes today but I need to do research for a Physics

Observe:
Normally I take the books back to the library on the way home.
Sometimes he works in the lab at night.
Always arrive on time for the class!
Never hand in your assignments after the deadline!
Observe:
How often do you do volunteer work?
How often does Rosa call her family?
How often does Victor do volunteer work?

How can I say?
Busy schedule
Audio
alguma coisa. Da mesma forma, Need to utilizado com outro verbo,
significando precisar/necessitar fazer alguma coisa. Observe:
I have to buy a new book.
He has to write two papers this week.
I need to buy a new book.
She needs to get some books at the library.
outro lado, utiliza Need to porque o fato de ela realizar volunteer work est

4. College days
Most students in the USA discover, after they get into university, that life
there isnt exactly the same as it was in high school. Many things are similar
- going to classes, taking tests, presenting papers -, but the load of studying
and assignments changes considerably, and free time is reduced drastically.
However, its an unforgettable time in everybodys life, when you have a
lot of fun and grow immensely as a person and as a future professional,
despite all the dedication that will be demanded from you.
Students at college are usually busy, because the courses they take require
more time - class time and study time - than subjects in high school. Some
universities alert their students that they will spend 40 hours or more each
week being a student, so its like having a full-time job. Also, college grades
or marks are not only based on tests: professors expect you to take notes
during lectures, read extra material and write papers comparing it all. Some
even say that you will write more in college in a semester than in two years
of high school.
Tests and other assignments - seminars, discussions and presentations
- also demand that you study a lot. The University of Iowa (like most
colleges), for example, recommends a minimum of 2 hours of study outside
of class for each hour spent in class and adds that this studying can take
the form ofreading, reviewing and rewriting lecture notes, talking through
class material with classmates, doing homework problems in the math or
statistics lab, researching and writing papers, working on group projects,
29
Glossary
e-Tec Brasil
studying in the language media center, etc. The point is: only part of your
learning takes place in class, a lot of it is up to you.
Also, many students have to work part-time to pay for their college fees,
because unlike Brazil, universities in the USA are private and, thus, paid.
Consequently, theres really not much free time, but you will have many
opportunities to have fun, meeting new friends and various groups of people.
5. Thats a wrap!

E por fim, voc estudou os verbos Have to e Need to, no Present Simple

First of all you need something similar to a fireplace; you can call it a barbecue
place. Alcohol and charcoal help make the fire. The use of rock salt or table
salt on the meat is entirely up to you. It is also very important to have a long
barbecue skewer made of steel with a wooden handle. And of course, the
most essential ingredient: meat, delicious cuts of meat, for example ribs.
The meat is gently placed on a skewer. The secret is to cook the meat with
smoke from low fire. The smell and the consistency are unforgettable.

In the USA, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day or, more specifically,
the fourth Friday in November. Its not a national holiday, but its a public
holiday in some states. Also, many workers take a day off on Black Friday, so
some people travel to see family members or friends in other cities.
Shopping for Christmas presents is another popular activity on Black Friday.
Many stores have special offers on some products, like toys and clothes,
and lots of people take advantage of that. Thats one of the reasons why
Rosa, Christine and Dube decided to go shopping on this day!
Public transportation systems usually work normally and follow their
regular schedule, but its also possible that they change it. Some stores
extend their opening hours on Black Friday and roads to popular shopping
destinations often have traffic jams.
There are two popular theories to explain why the day after Thanksgiving
Day is called Black Friday. One theory says that, on the Friday after
Thanksgiving Day, you see many black markings on the streets, made by the
wheels of vehicles in heavy traffic, hence the name Black Friday. The other
theory is that the term Black Friday comes from an old way of recording
business accounts, with profits written in black ink and losses in red ink. On
Black Friday, because of the special prices, stores always expect to start
registering - in black ink - the profits of Christmas shopping

The climate of the United States varies a lot due to the position of its states
when it comes to latitude, as well as to the range of geographic features the
country has. Generally speaking, the western and southern parts of the USA
have warmer weather if compared to eastern and northern areas. The eastern/
northern regions experience harsh winters with heavy snowfall but the summers
are pleasant; on the other hand, the western/southern parts have extremely hot
summers and, compared to the eastern/northern regions, tolerable winters.
Each region has its own unique characteristics, which you can see below:
Northwest (includes states like Oregon, Washington and Idaho): this is
perhaps the wettest part of the country, with scattered rain showers all year
round. Temperatures are mild (around 32.2C) and the summer months are
pleasantly warmer - but never too hot. Fog appears along the coast during
the warmer weather but it is less dense during midday.
Mid/South Pacific Rockies (includes states like California, Montana,
Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Nevada): these states usually have nice dry
summers. California has excellent weather all year round, with the northern
part of the state chilly in the winter but rarely freezing. There are very few
places in California that experience snow, and the state is known for its
nice weather. The winter months in the other states - like Montana, Idaho
e-Tec Brasil
78
English
and Wyoming - can be very cold, with temperatures below -15C. Colorado,
Utah and Nevada are famous for their excellent skiing.
Midwest (includes states like Dakotas, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana): this area is moderately dry. Rain occurs
mainly at the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Summers are
pleasant but winter time can be harsh, with lots of snow and strong cold winds.
Northeast (includes states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington DC and
Maryland): This region, on the other hand, is moderately rainy. In winter, it
experiences heavy snow and freezing rain. Summers are usually pleasant,
sunny and warm. Fall is especially beautiful in wooded areas, with the
turning of leaves into different colors being considered a local attraction.
Southeast (includes portions of Arkansas and Louisiana, Kentucky, West
Virginia, Virginia and Florida): like the Northeast, this whole area presents
moderate rainfall throughout the year. Spring, summer and fall are very
pleasant seasons and, for the most part, winters are quite mild and short.
Southern Florida, like California, usually has excellent weather all year round.
Southwest (includes states like Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma
and western portions of Arkansas and Louisiana): this is the hottest region
of the USA, and heavy rains accompanied with thunderstorms; dangerous
lightening and occasional tornadoes are not uncommon. Winters are
generally short but some freezing rains happen sometimes. The spring
and fall seasons are quite long and temperatures are generally very nice.
Summers are very hot with temperatures close to and sometimes exceeding
38C on many days.
Some weather conditions such as cyclones and fronts are more common in
the colder months than in the warmer months in the United States. Extreme
weather is not uncommon - tornadoes occur in the area of the Midwest known
as Tornado Alley with some regularity, whereas heavy snowstorms can hit
northern areas and tropical cyclones can strike the south. It is a fact that the
United States has more tornadoes than the rest of the countries of the world
combined. So, as you can see, the climate in the USA is not ordinary at all!

sports and at the same time you get your degree funded. In terms of the
level and scale of the competitions, US college sports are similar to and in
many cases surpass professional sports world-wide, not to mention that
they can be an entrance gate for students to become professional players.
Tiger Woods (in golf), John Isner (in tennis), Michael Jordan (in basketball)
and many more were college athletes.
However, the process of a student who wants to be an athlete has to go through to
get a sports scholarship can be quite long and difficult, especially for international
students. In the case of academic scholarships, the student simply submits an
application indicating that he or she would like to receive funding to study at a
university, but for sport scholarships students must enter a highly-regulated
recruitment process, where athletic directors and coaches play a central role.
You have to be spotted by them and invited to join the team or take part in one
of the selection trials, when you will be tested and, hopefully, selected.
Scholarships are generally for sports like baseball, softball, basketball,
volleyball, American football, soccer, tennis, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey,
skiing, swimming and diving, water polo and wrestling, and are given on a
yearly basis, generally renewable for four years, the normal time required to
complete a US undergraduate degree. The amount of money provided by
the scholarship varies from a few thousand dollars to full funding.
It is important to keep in mind that while playing for a college team with a
scholarship paying for the cost of your undergraduate degree, you do not just
play your sport: you have to study and get a degree in any course offered by
the university. Students whose main interest is in sports can often get a degree
in exercise science, physical therapy or some related field and so if they do not
become professional players, they can still work in the field of sports.

mental (I can speak e He can speak five languages) quanto fsica (I can walk
e She can swim).

Glossary
The basement is a room which is completely or partially below the ground floor.
Typically, basements are used as a utility space where items such as the boiler or
water heater, the fuse box, the air-conditioning system and others like the electrical
distribution system and cable television distribution point are located. However,
in many houses basements are done up and used as living space, but one of the
most important advantages of having a basement - and one that people in Brazil
hardly ever realize because of our climate - is that it can also reduce heating
and cooling costs as it is a form of earth sheltering if there is a tornado - as it is
the case in many states of the USA. Structurally, the basement walls form the
foundation of the house, but in colder climates the foundation must be below
the frost line - the frost line (also known as frost depth or freezing depth) is
the depth to which the groundwater in soil is expected to freeze, which may be
as deep as 1.5m. So, although some basements are completely below ground
level, most are only partially buried. This kind of basement is known as a lookout basement, in which the walls extend above ground level enough to allow its
windows to be above ground level, thus making it possible for sunlight to go in
and people to look outside - even though your view is almost at ground level!
As to what basements look like, you have two main kinds of interiors. One is
the unfinished basement, in which you usually find a water heater, various
pipes running along the ceiling and sometimes a workbench, a freezer or
refrigerator, and a washer/dryer set. Boxes holding various materials and
unneeded objects are often stored there, so it looks pretty much like a storage
room. Home workshops are also often located in unfinished basements, since
e-Tec Brasil
118
English
sawdust, metal chips, and other mess. Although this kind of basement is not
all clean and beautiful and the walls sometimes are not even finished with neat
materials, it is nonetheless protected against the cold, since insulation against
snow and water is a very important and necessary feature in cold climates.
On the other hand, there are the finished basements, in which case the
space has been designed to function as a fully habitable room of the house.
The walls and floors are covered with nice materials, making the room or
rooms look like any other part of the house. Frequently most or all of the
area is used as a recreation or living room, but it is not uncommon to find
there a guest bedroom or teenagers room, a bathroom, a home office, a
home gym, a home theater, a bar, or one or more closets, and, occasionally,
a part of it is used for storage and/or a laundry room. So, if you happen to
be invited to stay over someones house and youre offered a room in the
basement, dont get upset or scared that you will end up in a cold and dark
room: you may have been given a pretty great place to stay in!

emprestado.
possessive adjectives so sempre seguidos daquilo que a pessoa possui.
