SW 3410 Ethic Seminar

The three themes I noticed in the video were self-awareness, competence, and integrity of the
profession.
The video made it clear that we need to know ourselves well so we are not compromise in an
ethical dilemma. If we know we do not like to ask for help then we need to make sure we spend
time seriously evaluating our choices so we make ethical decisions. We also should realize the
reason we have supervisors and other colleagues is to insure we have a support system for the
help we will need in the future as professionals. They could help us reflect and plan to avoid
ethical and legal issues that from arise in situations. We may initially think we are just helping,
however; we could be violating the ethics code or public health code.
Competence as a social work is required so we know the ethical code and public health code.
The knowledge of the codes should help us if a dilemma arises. We also need to know what to
do if we have violated the code. We have to understand the scope of practice. Always seeking
more knowledge through continuing education credits can be resourceful. Continuing education
credits are also required to maintain are license. The knowledge of how technology can greatly
affect the possible violation of ethical codes is necessary.
The integrity of the profession needs to be upheld so that the general public will trust social
workers to help them with their problems. If a social worker discovers that a colleague has
violated a code, the proper steps need to be made so integrity is maintained. Supervisors and
colleagues should also provide support for a colleague or the clients of the colleague until the
matter has been resolved.
