Totalitarianism under Stalin


1. Define the term totalitarianism
The Term Totalitarianism is a term that describes a government that takes centralized
control of the public and private life

2. While reading the excerpt, create a list of methods of control used by Soviet leaders
and examples

The schooling because the people get learned by other people whom have to teach the
ways that the government demands.
3. Stalins methods of control.
a. What was the Great Purge? How would Stalins use of this action increase his
power? The great purge was a campaign launched by the Joseph Stalin when he turned
against the communist party. He launched this campaign of terror which killed anyone who

threatened his power or authority. This would increase his power because anyone who
threatened it would be murdered.

b. What was Pravda? How did Stalin explain the purpose of art in the USSR?
The Pravda was a communist newspaper which explained the purpose of art.

c. What is an atheism? How did Stalin use atheism to influence his control over his
citizens? Atheists are a group of people who believe that there is no god figure who
controls the earth.

4. Stalins control over the economy.


a. What is a command economy? A system in which the government makes all
economically involved decisions
b. Stalins Five Year Plans
1. Purpose To increase the output of coal, steel, oil, and electricity

2. Results? There were shortages of alot of consumer goods like housing and
clothing and food, however the economy boosted.

c. What methods did Stalin use to bring agriculture under state control?
The government took the farms over and made them governmentally controlled and they
were called collective farms

d. Kulaks - Who were they?

They were a group of people that resisted Collectivization.


1. How did they create a problem for Stalin?
They threatened his policies

2. How did he solve the problem?

He liquidated them and the state took control of the kulak land.
