12. (5 marks) Describe how the pancreas contributes to the homeostasis of


glucose levels within the body. Be sure to describe each hormone in detail
and provide a thorough description of how these hormones raise or lower
glucose within the blood (ie: what are their target organs?). You may use a
diagram and/or complete sentences in your answer.
The pancreas releases 2 hormones called Insulin and Glucagon and they are
released from special cells called pancreatic islets. When blood glucose
levels are too high Insulin stimulates the liver/muscles/adipose tissue to
lower blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels are falling Glucagon
stimulates the liver/muscles/adipose tissue to raise blood glucose levels.
Both Insulin and Glucagon are used to maintain homeostasis.
