OVERVIEW: Kemp identifies nine key elements in Instructional Design. These were used to create this lesson.
1. Identify instructional problems, and specify goals for designing an instructional program.
I met with the visual arts teacher to identify the gaps in performance. She expressed the need to review
Renaissance Masters in her high school Visual Arts I class. In order to provide an authentic assessment, we
decided the aim would be to have the students teach an introduction to a Renaissance Master to the sixth
grade art classes. This would allow both groups to benefit from the lesson.
2. Examine learner characteristics that should receive attention during planning.
Students are less likely to be interested in this subject due to the lack of knowledge about the time period.
Students are not motivated to learn it from an old dusty art text. Using technology will motivate student
interest in the subject.

3. Identify subject content, and analyze task components related to stated goals and purposes.
Goals Analysis: Students will research basic art terms from the Renaissance and one Renaissance Master.
Students will then create an Online PowerPoint to share with sixth grade art students.
4. State instructional objectives for the learner.
Objective: Students will interpret online sources about Renaissance Masters. Students will create a
PowerPoint Online presentation in Office 365. Students will present this to the sixth grade art classes.
5. Sequence content within each instructional unit for logical learning.
Students will begin with a book talk. I will use the document camera to share Eyewitness: Renaissance by
Alison Cole. I will also show selections from Renaissance Art Book by Wenda OReilly.
6. Design instructional strategies so that each learner can master the objectives.
I will then introduce the project. The art teacher will deliver a recap of the Renaissance. I will guide the
students through a lesson on the ethical use of information. I will then show them how to use the
PowerPoint Online Collaboration feature.
7. Plan the instructional message and delivery.
The art teacher and media specialist worked together to plan the instructional message and delivery.
8. Develop evaluation instruments to assess objectives.
The art teacher and media specialist worked together to develop the evaluation instrument that is included
below.
9. Select resources to support instruction and learning activities.
As an information specialist, I selected materials to support the instruction. I included a curated list on the
ethical use of information and on Renaissance Masters. Students used this information as they completed the
project.
FINAL PRODUCT:
This research project guides students in the investigation of one of the Renaissance Masters. Students explain in
a collaborative PowerPoint Online project how this figure exemplifies the Renaissance era. Students explain
how two or more pieces of this artists work exemplify Renaissance ideals and then present this project to the
sixth grade art classes.
PowerPoint must address the following research questions:
Overview summary of the figure placing them within the Renaissance time period and stating the
importance/significance of their contribution (i.e. why are they important?)
Brief biographical sketch (including dates, country & city that they lived in, notable life events, etc.)
Explanation of how they exemplify the era and spirit of the Renaissance period. Tell us how their
work/achievements are a reflection of the Renaissance style.
Visuals (at least two examples of paintings, sketches, diagrams, sculpture, book, etc.) that illustrate,
support, and extend your analysis. For example, This painting expresses the Renaissance period and
worldview because it or It is a great example of the artists new technique of .

Guidelines
1) Create at least a 5 slide PowerPoint presentation on a selected Renaissance figure. (You may add
more slides to it if needed, but 5 is the absolute minimum.) 2) A brief 5 minute speech on the figure that
will accompany the PowerPoint and expand on the information in the slides (this must be a more in-

depth explanation of the visuals that are being used in the presentation). Notecards should be used for
reference. Notecards will be turned in for grading after your presentation.
3) PowerPoint must be uploaded to teacher website or shared with the art teacher and media specialist
by the end of the class on the last day we are in the computer lab.
4) Presentations will be given in class on April 6th & 7th.
LIBRARY LESSON(S):
After the holding a book talk using the document camera and SMART board, I will provide instruction in the
appropriate use of information literacy skills using a curated Blendspace Lesson found at
https://www.blendspace.com/lessons/ka5eNPR00rfI9Q/lesson-1a-ethical-use-of-information. I will then review
copyright with a lesson found at https://www.blendspace.com/lessons/u3bmNwuyWITwAw/copyrightinformation-for-students-and-teachers. Next, I will demonstrate the use of PowerPoint Online. I will show the
students how to set up the project and share it with partners for collaborative editing. I will close by showing
them the curated resources on Renaissance Masters found at
https://www.blendspace.com/lessons/YAs0PxSFDy019w/artists-of-the-renaissance. As students work on the
collaborative project, I will be on hand to answer any questions that may arise and offer assistance as needed.
When the students present to the sixth grade art classes, I will video the presentations for the students to keep.

Reflection after teaching this lesson:

This lesson went very well. The students were eager to learn about the material. Many students had a foundation
knowledge of the Renaissance Artists. The use of the collaborative PowerPoint served to motivate the students
to learn more about these artists. The older students were excited to share this information with the younger
classes. It gave them a sense of pride to teach the sixth graders. The sixth graders took an online quiz over
Renaissance Masters after hearing the projects and scored very well on the assignment. Each class benefitted
from this lesson. Overall, this lesson was very successful. The art teacher and I plan to modify it a bit and teach
it again next semester.
