Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States of America. He got
the country out of a huge and dreadful slump, the great depression and led his country
during World War II. He won over the country by his impressive policies, the political climate
and personality. Yet, the question of, was FDR a good enough president at the time of the
1930s still occurs in peoples minds.
His personality played a big role into how he became such an inspiring president. He
was a very knowledgeable and smart man. He was a great talker and learnt most of his
knowledge through speech. He was not very interested in gaining knowledge through books.
He supposedly could talk for days about anything. He aimed to have a good connection with
all Americans. Roosevelt had good self-confidence and was able to speak his mind at any
given time. He knew how to get things done affectively and efficiently. He was a very strong
character; he dealt with Polio that made him paralysis at the age of 39. He faced his disorder
with courage and optimism. His personality played a large part in how he became a very
looked upon man.
During the Great Depression many Americans lost their jobs, starved, etc. Once
Roosevelt was elected into office it all changed for the better. The New Deal was brought
into place to boost Americans spirits. This new policy had three goals to provide assistance
to millions of needy Americans, to improve the level of the economy, and to pass laws to
eradicate poverty and unemployment. This was known as the three Rs, recovery, relief and
reform. Roosevelt closed all banks for 7 days in order to gain trust back from all Americans
that their money will once again be safe. Once the banks reopened they put more money
into the bank then they took out. The new deals next step was to help out all the
unemployed Americans. Roosevelt has estimated to have hired 8.5 million people. In 1935
the social security act came in place. He wanted pensions to be provided to all retired
Americans as well as for a certain period of time the unemployed were given money, this
was then later called welfare. Roosevelt was not going to rest until his policies were set and
the socioeconomic problems were settled.
When Roosevelt was elected in to the house he had a very large job to do. To help the
country out from a huge dept, this was known as the great depression. Herbert Hoover was
in office when the great depression started. He was known as the do-nothing president
who continued to let the country fall into a deep dark depression. He made very few
attempts to solve the problem; acts that were passed by Hoover actually increased the
problem. Tariffs were meant to be dropped but they were risen. Hoover got the country in to
even worse depression. Thus, when Roosevelt came into power he had to revaluate
everything that was done by Hoover. He helped turn the country around, winning over
Americas hearts.
Although the great depression did damage people lives, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped
the country get out of such a dramatic time. His policies, the political climate and
personality played a great part in how he become such a looked upon American. Once in

power he had to readjust the changed that were made from the president in power before,
creating a system that would change lives. By creating the New Deal he helped get an
entire country back on track. A smart and knowledgeable man yet very confident and
determined, helped him awe the country for the better. By getting an entire country out of a
slum and leading the country to a second world war, Roosevelt will forever be looked upon
as one of the greatest leaders.
