Code 5339000

Prerequisite(s) IGCSE Math I, II, Algebra 3-4

1.

Course Description: Trigonometry is a study of angles, properties of graphs of trig functions,

fundamental identities, addition and half-angle formulas, inverse trig functions, solutions of trig equations,
complex numbers and properties of trig solution. This course will benefit the students by providing the 4th year
math credit for PUHSD, while at the same time provide students with the mathematical background necessary
to meet college entrance requirements. In Trigonometry, the student will be able to: 1. Apply the definition and
properties of trigonometric functions; 2. Analyze and Evaluate the Unit Circle and Circular functions; 3.
Determine the graph and period of a trigonometric function; 4. Evaluate Inverse trig Functions; 5. Verify the
Fundamental trig Identities; 6. Use additional Trig Identities; 7. Solve Trig equations; 8. Use additional Topics in
Trigonometry; 9. Find the nth roots of complex numbers; 10. Students will be using the TI 84+ calculators to
provide opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and to foster the understanding of concepts.

2.

Materials Required: All students are required to enter each class with the same basic materials.
Each student must have a pencil, a spiral notebook for notes, and loose leaf paper or another notebook for
assignments. They will have access to a graphing calculator inside the class but would benefit from having a
personal calculator that they may use at home. The recommended calculator for this course is either: Texas
Instruments TI-84 or Casio fx-9750GII. Students will use the Trigonometry 9th edition by Lial, Hornsby, and
Schneider. They can check out a copy from the bookstore to keep at home.
3.

Grading System:
This course will calculate grades based on the table below. The instructor has
the right to excuse or curve any test, quiz or assignment as seen necessary during the semester.

Title I Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional
support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I
funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. If interested, please contact the Principal John
Biera or Assistant Principal for Instruction Dr. Gard for additional information at 602-764-7500.

5.

Make-up Policy: Assignments are graded on a completion basis only and it is the student's
responsibility to ask for extra help if they are struggling. All assigned work is required and is due the following
school day unless otherwise stated in class. Late work will only be accepted until the day of the test for that
unit. Any work turned in after the unit test will receive an automatic 2 point deduction from the grade.
All homework assignments will be available via the course website at http://phoenixunion.org/Page/2695.
All work, regardless of absences, will be due on December 12, 2014 for the Fall semester and May 15, 2015 for
the Spring semester.
All tests /quizzes and assignments are a reflection of you individual understanding of the concepts being
assessed. Students found to be copying someone elses work, or allowing another student to copy their work,
will lose credit for the assignment, test, or quiz. Repeated offenses will result in further disciplinary action.
Unless otherwise stated in class, all tests and quizzes are to be completed individually, should address all
questions asked on the test form there is the expectation of completing these assessments within the 50
minute class time. Extra time on tests will be determined at the sole discretion of the instructor on a case-bycase basis.

6.

Attendance: Absent is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than onehalf of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Tardy is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing.
(PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused
absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook
page 22)

7.

Student Responsibilities:
Follow all school rules as stated in the student handbook (no food, drink, hats or electronics
inside the classroom).
Respect all students, teachers, administrators and property on campus.
Come prepared to learn every day.
Treat the course with an open mind, positive attitude and strong work ethic.
Maintain a high level of academic integrity.

Participation Policy:
The Trigonometry team is of the opinion that effective collaboration and communication with peers is an
integral part of the learning process. Students are expected to participate in all class discussions and
group projects. Failure to be a positively contributing member of the group or class may result in loss of
credit for the day along with possible disciplinary action for Defiance.
Student Challenge: Ask 1 good question or make 1 good observation to the class each week. This will
help ensure that you understand the material and will also assist those around you with their learning as
well.
Remember: If you have a question about a topic, chances are good that there are at least 3 other people
in the class that have the same question. Be proactive, and ask the question! The teacher is here to help
you learn!

Consequences for Classroom Disruption include:

Reminder of the Rule/Guideline/Procedure/Expectation.

Deliver a consequence such as serving a quiet time apart from the group, after school detention
etc.
Phone call home.
Conference/contact with the counselor to inform him/her of the problem.

A conference that may include the following: teacher, student, parent, counselor, intervention
specialist, etc.
Submit a discipline referral.
Note: The sequence of consequences may be altered depending on the severity of the behavior.

Dress Code: The Central High School community will wear appropriate clothing that is clean, modest,
and not disruptive to the educational program. If a student is in violation of the dress code they will be
asked to change. Excessive violations may result in further disciplinary action. Items of attire with
obscene words, or inappropriate slogans/graphics may NOT be worn. Immodest or indecent attire is not
acceptable and footwear must be worn. Household slippers are not appropriate. Immodest attire also
includes: bare shoulders, and extremely tight or baggy clothing. Examples: tube tops, see-through tops,

than the end of the fingertips. All pants, shorts, or skirts are to be worn at the top of the hip.

Instructor Responsibilities:

Provide an easy, no-nonsense way to understand the progression of mathematical concepts.

Provide a fair and equitable assessment of student performance.
Prepare the students for practical usage of the material.
Critique tests and homework so students can use these as individual learning tools.
Make math enjoyable.

Provide appropriate accommodations or modifications to the curriculum for individual students

based upon the needs stated in their 504 Plan or Individual Education Plan (IEP).
