Tutorial 1

1. State the primary objectives of process control.


2. In general, state the function of controller, sensor, transmitter and final control element in a control
loop.
3. Explain control variable (CV), manipulated variable (MV) and disturbance.
4. Consider a person driving a car on a free way with a speed limit of 130 km/h.
a) Identify the controller, the sensor, the controlled variable, the manipulated variable and the final
control element.
b) Draw a block diagram for this process.

5. Generally, a control loop comprises of 4 main elements. Identify and name the function of four different
symbols in A CONTROL LOOP for Figure 1.
6. In general, explain the function of each of the controller mode: P (Proportional), I (Integral) and D
(Derivative) in controlling a process.
