Technology Leadership Video

Title of the Specific Lesson Topic- Numbers Spreadsheets

Session Overview- Middle and High School Math and Science Teachers will Love this
session. Learn how to Work Smarter NOT Harder using Spreadsheets. Spreadsheets
can be used to make easy to read Graphs, Statistics, and Data Tables that Do the
Calculations for you. Come join us for this, Hands on Learning Experience, in order to
help you integrate technology in your classroom! Please bring your IPad, MacBook,
Dell Venue, or district issued laptop. Numbers is an Apple Based program, but is similar
to Excel so dont fear if you want to learn these same features as they are compatible
for both.
Presenters- Amy McPherson-SJH, Dana McCormick-ATA, and Todd Underwood-MBHS
Outcomes
The following learning outcomes were for the Tips and Tricks and Number Crunching
and Making Graphs portions of the Staff Development session which I was responsible
for leading. These are the outcomes that coincide with the video segments shown.
The learning outcomes were for the teachers to be able to use Numbers or Excel

to adjust the font size and color,

manipulate cell color, size, merging and text wrapping,
to enter formulas for calculations, customize graphs and move them to separate
sheets,
understand and use technology systems,
to evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on
appropriateness to task and
to apply shortcuts used in this course for use in spreadsheets.

NETS-T Standards
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology
to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both
face-to-face and virtual environments.
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and

assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content
learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the
Standards
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and
resources to promote student learning and creativity
3. Model digital age work and learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative
professional in a global and digital society.
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to
new technologies and situations
b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital
tools and resources to support student success and innovation
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving
digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and
demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of
technology to improve student learning
Rationale for the Instructional Design

The specific instructional strategies were decided upon through collaboration with the
other teacher presenters and through meeting with a District Technology Staff member.
It was decided that it would be important to cover topics using both Numbers and Excel
and to highlight the differences between the two programs. The technology tools and
supporting materials used include both Excel and the Numbers App for IPads as well

as the Numbers program for Macbooks. A weebly web page

(www.hcsnumbers.weebly.com ) was created to localize information for teachers. I
created tutorial videos using Premier Elements v12 software for each segment in order
that teachers could go back and review any of the topics that were discussed during the
staff development sessions. The teachers were given sample data to manipulate in
order to create data tables and graphs and to successfully complete the learning
objectives for the training session. Two different platforms for spreadsheets were
chosen in order to reach a broad teacher audience since Middle School and High
School teachers have different Personal Digital Learning devices provided by the
District. The data and hands on activities were designed to give teachers examples of
work that could be done with their students. All teacher presenters involved met weekly
to plan and coordinate the implementation of the session.
Analysis of Implementation

The strategies that worked well were the planning sessions, the use of a weebly web
page, the creation of video tutorials and the use of small groups for hands on activities.
These strategies allowed for great interaction between the participants and ensured that
those teachers taking the sessions were able to receive the information they needed
and were able to learn, in a short period of time, the tools necessary to apply their
knowledge and feel confident in implementing these digital tools in the classroom. What
did not work well was the fact that we had only one teacher in the morning session and
she was using the Numbers App on the IPad and we were not familiar with the limited
functionality of this App. Also, we did not have anyone designated to actually film the
session and this caused an issue with the cameras. We lost some footage and one of
the cameras became loose during filming and started to drop. This limited the footage
that was available to create the final video. The lesson could be improved for further
deliver if each of the presenters would have just delivered the information to an online
audience as opposed to a few students in the classroom. It is difficult to plan how long
students in the classroom actually take to accomplish various tasks.

Summary of Significance

I believe that the session demonstrates my instructional technology competence by the

use of digital tools such as the website for delivery of data and information through the
use of tutorials for the teachers. This allowed for me to continue to follow-up with the
teachers as more assistance was needed. The teachers expressed their appreciation
for the content delivered, the hands on experiences provided and the ability to

immediately implement the knowledge taught to help alleviate some of their anxiety in
reports that needed to be delivered electronically in Excel workbook format to the district
office. The learning outcomes that are evidenced by this video include the following:
teachers were able to adjust the font size and color, manipulate cell color, size, merging
and text wrapping, to enter formulas for calculations, customize graphs and move them
to separate sheets, understand and use technology systems, to evaluate and select
information sources and digital tools based on appropriateness to task and to apply
shortcuts used in this course for use in spreadsheets.
