INTEGER REVIEW

Lesson #1 Grade 7 Math March 24 2015

9:28 AM 10:10 AM
Ashley Enslen
GENERAL OUTCOMES
NUMBER SENSE Students will develop number sense.
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction
of integers- concretely, pictorially and symbolically. ( C,CN,PS,R,V)
PROCESS OUTCOME
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction
of integers through the use of card games and activities with their peers.
INSTRUCTIONAL INTELLIGENCES
Value lines- Create a straight line of tape (or get students to line up on imaginary
line.) Students will line up in order according to a given question for example,
tell students to line up shortest to tallest, youngest to oldest, ect.
4 corners- Designate each corner of the room a different ranking of opinion for
example- strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree. Ask the students
different questions that they can respond to in an agree/disagree fashion. Have
them move to whichever corner has the most appropriate response.
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES/LEARNING STYLES
Logical/ Mathematical Students must think logically to solve equations.
Intrapersonal- Students are working with their peers.
Bodily/Kinesthetic- Students are not sedentary the entire class- opportunities to
get up and move around.
MATERIALS
Tape- to make value line on the floor.
2 different colors of paper- one color
containing integer addition and subtraction
questions, and one color containing the
answers to the questions. These will be
made up ahead of time. Make sure that one
duplicate question or answer sheet is made
in case there are an odd number of students.

MANIPULATIVES
Write the lesson outcome
on the board prior to class.
Write down a few brain

class.
Get students to move desks
aside so the value line is

in half.
Students will be up and
moving around for the
value line activity- will be

leave a 20% tip, what would your total bill

come to after including tax and tip?
A- 52.49*0.20=10.50. 52.49*0.05=2.62.
52.49 +10.50+2.62=$65.61.
2.Dan works at Sportcheck. A customer is
looking at buying a pair of Nikes that are
regular priced at $129.99 plus tax, but they
are 20% off for the weekend sale. How
much would the shoes be with the sale price
including tax? If Dan makes 12%
commission, what would his earnings be
from the sale? A- 129.99*0.20=26.00.
129.99-26.00=103.99.103.99*0.05=5.20.
5.20+103.99=$109.19. Dan would make
$12.48 (103.99*0.12)
3.Hannah and Sarah are roommates, and
they take turns buying groceries for the
month. Hannah shops at Superstore and
Sarah at Walmart. One month Hannah
bought a 15 pack of KD for $13.29. Next
month, Sarah buys a 50 pack of KD for
$45.99. Who is the smarter shopper? If both
stores had a 15% off coupon, what would
the unit prices be? A)Hannah superstore
@ $0.88 and Walmart at $0.91. B)
(13.29*0.15=1.99.) (13.29-1.99=11.30).
(11.30/15=$0.75) (45.99*0.15=6.90.)
(45.99-6.90=39.09)(39.09/50=$0.78)

the other.

[ 10-15 mins]
Practice/Development
Go over addition and subtraction of integers
do a few example equations on the board.
After review, hand out the integer questions
and answers on the colored paper. Hand out
an equal number of questions and answers
but hand out a duplicate answer sheet if
there are an odd number of students. Get
students with one color of paper to stand on
one side of the line, and students with the
other color of paper to stand on the opposite
side of the line. Get students to crumple
sheets into snowballs, and on the count of
three, throw their snowball to the opposite
side of the line tell students to throw
nicely! Direct them to pick up a piece of
paper on their side of the line, unfold it and
see if they got a question or answer.
Students with the question sheets must
solve the equation and find the person with
the correct answer sheet. This person will be
their partner for the card activity. If there is
an odd number of students there will be one
group of three. Instruct students to sit with
their partner. Once with your partner, share
3 fun facts with each other.
Explain to students the integer card game
instruct them to remove face cards from the
deck. Ace cards will represent the number
one for this purpose. Red cards will be
positive numbers, and black cards will be
negative numbers. Students will deal out an
equal number of cards to themselves and
their partner(s). They will then flip over one
card from their decks at the same time.
Whoever solves the equation first gets to
keep the cards. Calculators are not allowed.
Check for understanding thumbs up if
they understand, thumbs down if they do
not understand. Once any questions have

Students will go over the

review questions and ask
for clarification or more
examples if needed.
Students will receive one of
two colored sheets of paperstudents will stand on one
side of the line with their
peers who have the same
color of paper. Students will
crumpled their sheets into
balls and throw their
snowballs to the opposite
side of the line when
directed. They will unfold
their papers, and if they
have a question they must
solve the equation and find
the person with the opposite
color of paper who has the
correct answer. Students
will then sit with their
partner or group of three.
Students will listen to the
explanation of card game
and ask questions if needed.
They will then proceed to
play the game.

been answered, hand out one deck of cards

to each pair. Students in the group of three
will take turns playing each other.
[20 min]
Check for Understanding
Walk around observing students- make sure
everyone understands the game and is
confident with adding and subtracting
integers.
Closure/Reflection
Ask the students to put the cards back into
their boxes, return the desks to rows and
turn their attention to the front.
Go over the answers to the brain teasers
from the beginning of class.
If there is still time remaining, play 4
corners with the students designate one
corner as strongly agree, one corner as
agree, one as disagree and the last as
strongly disagree. Ask students a question
pizza is my favorite food or math is my
favorite subject. Then get them to move to
the corner with their appropriate response to
the question.
[ 5-10 min]

Students will demonstrate

that they can add and
subtract integers while
playing the card game.

Students will clean up from

the card game and move the
desks back into rows.
Students will go over the
answers to the brain teasers.
If time, students will play 4
corners.

MODIFICATIONS and EXTENSIONS

If there is time remaining after the 4 corners activity, students can work on their
homework or review questions from a previous class, or work on homework from
another class.
EVALUATION and ASSESSMENT
As this is a review class, students will not be evaluated or marked for their work,
but instead evaluated on their participation and attitude.
NOTES AND REVISIONS
Students enjoyed the card game and the brain game video the snowball activity
was a little chaotic - perhaps another way of getting students into groups would be
more suitable.
