How it works, how controlled, hydraulic or air operating system?
Compensator is the component that decreases the influence of the heave of a drilling vessel on the drill bit. Crown mounted compensator is controlled by the driller. Air is supplied by the air pressure vessels (APV) to the accumulator, which is filled with air and fluid (oil in our case). This air moves fluid to the cylinders and compensator opens. When there is no heave effect, compensator is not used & it is not opened. Once we have heave effect due to which lets say rig starts jumping 3 m (e.g.), then we open compensator for >3m to avoid string from being hit to ground or damaging crown block. 12 ft
If in this case for example while drilling we have formation
hydraulics exerting 500 K and we want to apply more WOB, in this case we open compensator more and decreasing the force of the formation. In the case if we run the casings and we have hydraulics of
500K
formation coming from bottom, but we cannot open compensator
further (it is limit 25 ft. and @ 25 ft. tool will be damaged), in this case we should bleed of the air from the accumulator
