Multimedia Instructional Design Document: Using Technology to Deliver

Social Studies Instruction

Heather Hoskinson
EDU 6386: Multimedia Design and Development

Description
Development of a Touchcast presentation for Barbara Morganfields Fall 2014 Ed Tech course. The Touchcast
presentation will function as a sample for students of educational technology they can use for social studies
instruction. This project uses Touchast.

Part I ANALYSIS
1.TOPIC:
This project involves creating a Touchcast presentation that could be used to deliver social studies instruction in a
high school World Geography course. It will be designed as a sample lesson to exemplify to EDU xxxx students
how to incorporate educational technology to deliver engaging and effective content. Specifically, the educational
technology being used is a teaching and learning application found on iPad and PC platforms.
The Touchcast presentation will cover four different World Geography TEKS.
2.NEEDS ASSESSMENT:
Assess needs:
The overarching goal of Morganfields Ed Tech course is to demonstrate innovative and effective means of
educational technology incorporation. Students will come to understand the role of technology in the classroom
and develop strategies to implement technology to teach content. Students will learn how to model and apply the
ISTE Standards for Students (ISTE*S) and also learn how to meet the ISTE Standards for Teachers (ISTE*T).
This project will serve as an example of how technology can be used to deliver content knowledge a specific area
so that they can create one in their content area for use in the classroom.
Instructional needs:
Teachers need to understand the role of educational technology in their classroom and learn about the ways in
which it can be used to enhance instruction. Modeling use of technology in a content-specific area will help to
fulfill this learning objective. Touchcast is an iPad teaching and learning application and using new and different
applications will serve to increase their knowledge of educational technology and demonstrate its diversity of
offerings.
3.TARGET AUDIENCE:
Students of educational technology course:
Computer Skills: Intermediate
(indicating middle moderate sometimes equates to basic)
Computer Access: High speed internet connectivity
Computer Hardware: Minimum RAM and video card to run the program. PC or iPad only
4.GOALS:
The goal of the project is to demonstrate best practices for educational technology implementation in a contentspecific area. The benefit is that students will get to see experience first-hand a digital teaching tool, before
moving forward to create their own.
5.LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the lesson, learners will be able to:

Use Touchcast to deliver content-specific instruction.
Use storyboards to design the presentation.
Use TEKS to guide them in design.
Learn definition of vApps.
Utilize multimedia (and combine into one platform) to cover learning objectives.
6. PREREQUISITES:
The students will need to have access to a PC or iPad and and an internet connection to download the Touchcast
software/app. If they do not possess either, we may need to consider possibility of checking out iPads from
Teaching and Learning Department for them. Another alternative is for Dr. Morganfield to bring the iPad cart to
class and allow them class time to work on the project. The possibility also exists that Touchcast will have a iOS
version of their program by the fall.
7. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:
-

This project will include a variety of instructional strategies to address the needs and learning objectives
for this module.

1. Multimedia Principle - People learn more deeply from words and graphics than from words alone.
a. Touchcast is distinctly designed for integration of multimedia. Multiple video apps can be inserted
into the presentation as instructional layers, incorporating tools such as videos, maps, hyperlinks,
documents, images, etc. Touchcast does not require the user to do any scrolling. It is all
contained within the screen.
2. Contiguity - When corresponding printed words and graphics are placed close to one another on the
screen or when spoken words or graphics are presented at the same time.
a. This is one of the strong suits of Touchcast, because its design allows so much layering.
Supporting text can be overlayed so that the viewer sees it at the same time instruction is being
delivered in-app. The whiteboard feature will allow typed or written text inserted into the
presentation to support the content, keeping content linked.
3. Coherence - People learn more deeply from multimedia lessons when distracting stories, graphics, and
sounds are eliminated.
a. I plan to ensure that all pieces of content directly support the topic. There will not be any
background music of fluff but rather, focused information.
4. Modality - People learn more deeply from multimedia lessons when graphics are explained by audio
narration rather than onscreen text.
a. I will be using a short 3-5 minute National Geographic video to deliver introductory content. This
video does contain audio narration.
5. Redundancy - People learn more deeply from multimedia lessons when graphics are explained by audio
narration alone rather than audio narration and onscreen text.
a. The introductory video I am incorporating also contains graphics which explain tectonic shifts and
tsunamis. These graphics are supported with audio narration.
6. Personalization - People learn more deeply when the speaker uses conversational style rather than
formal style.
a. I will be recording video of myself talking to the viewer, using the teleprompter feature of
Touchcast. This will be the first thing the viewer sees, is me opening up the presentation. I am
undecided if I will be in it throughout, or just at the beginning. It will definitely serve to personalize
instruction and utilize a more conversational tone.
