Balloon Car Project

Each Tech group will design and build a toy car which is powered by a balloon. In class, each group will then
time how long their car takes to travel the one meter from the start line to the finish line, calculate the average
speed of the car over that one meter distance.
Materials:
Students may use any material needed to construct their car
Balloon
Timer
Rules and Remarks:
1. The vehicle must maintain at least 3 points of rolling contact with the floor at all times.
2. The vehicle can only be powered by one balloon.
3. The wheels and axle used on the vehicle cannot have been professionally manufactured for that purpose.
Grading:
70 points will be awarded for building a car which can move across the floor from the
start line to the finish line 1 meter away. Cars that do not cross the finish line will receive 60 points.
30 points will be awarded a correct calculation of the cars speed over the 1 meter
distance.
