This
particular unit will integrate many academic activities and provide a more in depth
look at plant life. Some specific areas covered will include: parts of a seed, parts of
a plant, energy, plant diversity, and the four seasons.
Students will complete a variety of activities to help enhance their knowledge
about plants. Some of the activities will integrate mathematics, literacy, and
science. The second graders will first encounter the parts of a seed through
dissecting a lima bean seed, and exploring pine cones. Next, the students will learn
about the functions of plants parts through a jigsaw activity and creating at 3D plant
diagram. The third day students will learn about the water cycle by completing a
booklet, and what a plant needs in order to grow. On the fourth day the students will
learn about five different types of farms, play a matching game, and explore plants
in different locations. On the final day, students will explore the four seasons
connecting this to an experiment about why leaves change colors.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards:
Science and Technology and Engineering
3.1.1.A2 Investigate the dependence of living things on the suns energy, water,
food/nutrients, air, living space, and shelter.
3.1.1. A5 Identify and describe plant parts and their functions.
3.1.2. A5 Explain how different parts of a plant work together to make the organism
function.
3.3.2. A4: Explore and describe that water exits in solid (ice) and liquid (water) form.
Explain and illustrate evaporation and condensation.
Ecology and Environment
S4.A.3.3.1 Identify and describe observable patters (e.g., growth pattern in plants,
weather, water cycle).
S4.B.3.2.3 Explain and predict how changes in seasons affect plants, animals, or
daily life (e.g., food availability, shelter, mobility).
4.4.3. B Explain how agriculture meets the basic needs of humans
Students will be taking part in various inquiries which will help them to
practice the prediction skills. Also, they will be participating in different activities
which involve class discussions through which they apply their knowledge about
plants. The main focuses of this unit will be to learn what each part of a plant does
and how they all work together, as well as going more in depth about how plants
are effected by nature.
Through the completion of this unit students will be able to name the parts of
a seed, describe what each part of the plants does, explain what plants need to
survive, discuss how important farming is to everyday life , discuss how plants
survive in different locations, and describe the effects each season has on a plant.
The content in this unit will provide students with a more in depth understanding
about plants and just how important they are for the earth.
