LESSONSUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Inthislesson,thestudentswillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinahandsonexperiment.
Theexperimentwillallowthestudentstoextractoilfromacoconut.Theywillseehowanordinarycoconut
doesnotwasteanyofitsproduct.Itisedible,canbeconsumedasaliquid,anditsoilcanbeextracted.
Sustainabilityisaboutloweringthewasteintheecosystem.Byusingallpartsofthecoconut,wearelimiting
waste.Inaddition,coconutoilhasseveraldifferentfactorsandbenefitstoit.Alone,coconutoilcanaffectthe
healthandconditionofpeople.Thestudentswillfollowlabprocedureandmaintainsafebehavior.Theywill
performthelabandthenwritethestepsoftheproceduretoproveunderstanding.
OBJECTIVES
The students will be able to follow lab procedures and directions while demonstrating proper
behavior.
Thestudentswillbeabletodescribetheprocessoftheexperimentintextandhighlightthestepson
theirlabsheet.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
Forthisactivity,studentswillbeassessedbasedoffoftheirbehavior,seenbytheteacher.
Thestudentswillalsobeassessedbyaworksheetthatwillbegivenandfilledoutthroughthelab.
Theworksheetwillbeturnedinafterthelab,sotheteachercanassessthefocus,andunderstanding
ofthestudents.
Thefollowingday(dayfour)willbeevaluatedbyapostlabreflection.
PREREQUISITEKNOWLEDGE
Priortothelab,thestudentswillneedtoreflectontheknowledgefromthepreviousdayslesson.Dayone
anddaytwodiscusswhatacoconutis,whereitisfrom,andadeepunderstanding/descriptionofcoconutoil.
Certainvocabularytermswillneedtobeknown.Thestudentsmusthaveageneralideaofwhatsustainability
isandhowiteffectsoursociety.

Studentswilllistencarefullytothelabdirectionsgiven.
Theteacherwillexplainindepth,thelabprocedure.Theteacherwillthendemonstratethelabfor
thestudents.
Theteacherwillpassoutthelabworksheet,andcountoffthestudentsintogroupsoffour.
Thestudentswillallprepareforthelab,andputonafresh,cleanpairofglovesandbeginthelab.
Tobegin,thestudentswillremovetheorganic,naturalcoconutflakesfromthebag.

havingtouseaknife.
Thestudentswillalsobegivenhalfofacoconut(alreadysplit)andgivenaspoon,toremovechunks
ofcoconutfromtheshell.
Thestudentswillwriteontheirworksheetthetexture,andwhattheyobserveaboutthecoconut
flakesandchunks.
Next,thestudentswillripthecoconutflakesinhalf,andintosmallerpieces.
Thestudentswillthentaketheirbowlfullofcoconutpiecestotheteacher,andhavetheteacherput
thecoconutthroughajuicer.
Thejuicerwillremovethejuiceandinputitintoajar.
Thestudentswilltaketheirjars,putagroupnameonit,andontoadesignatedshelf.
Thestudentswillfinishtheirworksheetregardingthelabandsaveitforthefollowingday.
