Framing the lesson/ Introduction

The class will be introduced to the book
Charlottes Web, written by E.B White. Students
will have prior knowledge of what a theme is
and will be asked to recollect that knowledge
and answer a few simple questions on themes.
The themes in the book will be introduced:
admiration, language and communication,
friendship, time, the home, perseverance,
mortality, and coming of age. Students will be
asked what their idea of these themes is. The
students will then get a chrome book and log
onto Edmodo, there will be two question on the
board, When you get older, do friendships
change? and How is perseverance achieved in
everyday life?, the students will answer those
two questions and then must respond to two
other classmates.
Activities
We will be reading the first two chapters of
Charlottes Web. I will read the first chapter to
the students. The students in pairs will read the
second chapter. After they are done reading,
they will make graphic organizers of all the
characters in mind meister, even though mind
meister can be shared with more than one
student, every one will be creating their own.
They will need to complete this project as the
read and as new characters are introduced.
Closing
After the 25 minutes are over, we will come back
as a whole class and discuss the first and second
chapters. Students will write down a short
summary of what they read and learned in that
class period. Those summaries will go in

Monitor/Feedback
Its very important to have friendships and maintain those
friendships over the years. As you grow older you are going
to change. Perseverance is also important if you want to
achieve a difficult task. Students should realize the
importance of these themes not only in the book but also in
every day life.

Make sure all students are reading in their pairs. Walk

around and answer any questions they might have. There
might be some difficult vocab or words they dont know
how to pronounce.

Writing summaries will help students recall what they read

in the chapters and can also be used in a study guide for the
quiz following the book. It can also be used to show parents
what their children are learning.

individual binders and turned into a portfolio.

After every day of reading, students will write a
short summary and turn it in.
