RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING TO FRICK NG FLUIDS

IN ROTARY SCREW GAS COMPRESSORS
I.

For clean machines presently using mineral base or PAO oils (e.g.Frick NG-1, NG-2, Summit NG-150,
Chevron HDAX ):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Drain compressor and package thoroughly. Drain oil from all low-lying areas, (oil separator, oil
cooler, filter cartridges, compressor housing, cylinder areas, both sides of pistons).
Change oil filters.
Fill with the recommended Frick fluid, chosen for operating conditions and gas composition.
Send lube sample to the Frick laboratory at 200 hours.
Follow guidelines from Frick analysis. If high water content or excessive contamination indicates a
high level of the replaced fluid is remaining in the system, change the oil again by steps 1 thru 4.
Resample at 200 hours.
Follow oil analysis guidelines for future oil change and sampling intervals.

II. For clean machines changing oil between incompatible base-stocks, (e.g. mineral or PAO base to PAG,
or PAG to mineral or PAO base)
1. Drain compressor and package thoroughly. Drain oil from all low lying areas, (oil separator, oil
cooler, filter cartridges, compressor housing, cylinder areas, both sides of slide valve, and slide
stop pistons).
2. Fill compressor with a half charge of recommended Frick fluid, chosen for operating conditions
and gas composition. Half charge is defined as sufficient to build adequate oil pressure, and avoid
low oil level or oil pressure shutdown while closely attended.
3. Operate unit at normal conditions for 1-2 hours.
4. Shut down and drain thoroughly, (see 1).
5. Change oil filters.
6. Refill with the recommended Frick fluid to recommended operating level.
7. Send lube sample to the Frick laboratory at 200 hours.
8. Follow guidelines from Frick analysis.
9. Resample at normal recommended interval.
10. Follow oil analysis guidelines for future oil change and sampling intervals.
III.
Coalescing filters normally do not wear out, but they can become ineffective if slugged with liquids, or
are contaminated with particles. If the compressor is slugged with water or other contaminants, allowing
liquids to flood the coalescers rather than just the normal oil mist, the coalescers should be changed. High
pressure-drop or high oil carryover through the coalescing filters would indicate that they need to be changed.
