Observation on Science lesson and Reflection

For my informal science observation I choose to observe the fourth graders in

STEM lab. For this particular week they were doing a lesson on fossils, so they had the
opportunity to dig for them and figure out what they are. The first week of IMB they dug
for the fossils and cleaned them off, during the second week, they worked in teams to
decide which era they were from, and what species they may be from. At the end of this
the students had the opportunity to Skype with a real archeologists, and talk to them
about their findings.
Throughout this entire lesson, the students were engaged and seemed to be having
a great time. I thought this was a really great way to teach them about fossils, while
letting them get their hands a little dirty. The best way for students to learn is to immerse
them in it, and give them hands on activities to do. I think that this school has done an
amazing job of meeting this goal; they incorporate science and hands on activities into
everything they do, every day.
I enjoyed my two weeks in this school so much more than I expected; I have even
considered teaching older grades, I used to be set on primary. I also loved how they
found a way to teach science and social studies, even though there was not a whole lot
time allotted for these. My teacher would make time for both of these subjects, they
would have science every other day, and social studies on the other days.
I feel that I had a great experience overall, and these two weeks made me feel so
much more prepared and ready for student teaching. I did not realize how much patience,
and time management it really does take to teach lessons, and I dont think I will ever

perfect these things; but that is the fun of teaching. I will continue to learn new tricks for
teaching throughout my entire career, and with every year of students I will have to
modify this method. I love that about teaching, and I cant wait to have my own
classroom to implement all that I have learned.
