Student Objectives

1. Studio Production Studentswillexperimentwith


watercolortechniquesandusewatercolorstocreateanAsian
inspireddesign.Studentswillconstructalanternfromfour
watercolorpanels.Theywilllearnvocabularythatrelatestothe
projectanduseprinciplesofdesign.H.12.4,E.12.1,C.12.1,A.12.2
2. Art History Students will be looking at Asian
artwork to base their lanterns off of. They will
learn all about the history of the lantern and what
it is used for. B.12.2, G.12.1, D.12.1
3. Art Criticism At the end of the project the
students will get together to discuss what worked
well and what didnt. They then will each get a
rubric so they can evaluate themselves on how
well they think they did. J.12.10

4. Aesthetics During their discussion/critique the


students will asses/evaluate other students
lanterns and talk about what ones have good

Process:
Day1:

10minutesOncestudentsaresituatedandreadytogo,theteacherwillstartwiththeirattention
grabber.WhoknowsanythingabouttheChineseculture?HasanyoneseenChineselanterns?Doyou
knowwhatthelanternsareusedfor?TheymakethemfortheLanternfestival;itisafestival
celebratedonthefifteenthdayofthefirstmonthintheyearinthelunarcalendar,thelastdayofthe
LunarNewYearcelebration.Thentheteacherwouldproceedwiththeslideshowofpicturesforthe
studentstogetideasfrom.Theteacherwillthenproceedtotelltheclasswhattheprojectisandhand
outtherubricsotheyknowwhatwillbeexpectedfromthem.Atthistimestudentscanaskquestions.
30minutesNextthestudentswillbegivenbooksandotherresourcestolookatforideas.
Theycanthensketchtheirideasoutintotheirsketchbook.
Eachstudentwillberequiredtohavefivedifferentideassketchedoutintheirsketchbooksand
checkedoffbytheteacher.
10minutesOncethestudentshavecomeupwiththeiridea,theteacherwilldemonstratehowto
createawashwithwatercolorpaintsandothertechniquessuchaswetonwet,splatter,andwetwith
saltwithwatercolorpaints.

20minutesForthenextpartoftheclasseachstudentwillpickoneofthosetechniquestotrywith
theirsketches.Oncetheyhavetriedafewtheywilldecideononetodoforallfourpanelsfortheir
lantern.

20minutesForthelast20minutesoftheclassthestudentswillhavethechancetostartdrawing
theirfinaldrawingsontheirpanels.Eachpanelwillbe10x13(25.4x33cm).Allthesideswill

Oncetheyarefinishedandtheirpaintingisdry,thestudentswill
havethechancetouseasharpieifwantedtooutlinetheirpicture.

Oncethatisdonetheywillfoldthe1(3.8cm)marginonall
sidesinandputgluetothebackofthem.Thismakeseachpanel
rigidenoughtosupportthelantern.

Theycanthenmaketasselsbywrappingstringaroundtheir
hand,tying,andcuttingonesideofloops.

Whenstringingthepanelstogether,startatthebottomofthe
twopanels,stringontasselsandlaceupthepanelstogetherlikea
tennisshoe.
