Dark Subtlety Written by: Matt Tyler Playtested by: Steve Mumford, Paul Casagrande, Tim Hill, Sean Hillman In the southern plains of the Scorpion lands, the governor of a lonely city celebrates his sons gempukku. Is it an honest celebration, or a mask for something more subtle? Dark Subtley is an adventure for 4 to 6 Rank 1 characters using the 4th Edition Legend of the Five Rings rules, and is intended to introduce players ot the many situations they may find themselves in future adventures. O20 This is an adventure for the Legend of the Five Rings Role-Playing Game Fourth Edition. It is designed for Rank | Characters from any clan, and has been designed to be time-line nuetral so it can seemlessly fit into any campaign idea as a perfect starting area, or a stepping stone for new characters in between planning sessions. Alot of the information used in this adventure can be found in the Emerald Empire, Enemies of the Empire, and the Core Book, as well as source material derived from Secrets of the Scorpion. While it is not neccessary to have anything other than the Core book to run this adventure, it will be beneficial to have these other books on hand should a question arrise that is not covered as part of the adventure. Background: The Scorpion Clan survives on not only it's vast wealth of blackmail, favors, and secrets, but also it's income from vices and the rich farmlands it has the sacred duty of protecting and tending in the Emperors name. One such area of farmlands can be found in the southeastern range of Scorpion land known as the Nezuban Province. This province falls under the protection of the Bayushi family, and the Governor of this province has always been of that noble family, with the line of succession being handed down through the family. ‘The present Governor is Bayushi Konpaku (information can be found on him in the appendix of NPC stats). Several farming lands have been afflicted with a form of famine for some time now, and several governors and daimyo of other provinces have been receiving some pretty strong pressure from the family daimyo about why production has been low. In Nezuban Province however, production has slacked off a little, but has not slacked off as much as in other places. Konpaku has instituted several changes to how the farms in his land are to operate, but so far everyone is at a loss as to what is cuasing these farms to flounder their crop. In truth it is a sect of farmers from the various villages. These disgruntled peasants have come across some sources of obsidian and have been plowing the ground substance into the soil during their shifts. Why exactly they are doing this is left open for you the game master to determine for better ease of fitting this into a story concept of your creation. Only a handful of the peasants at the various farms are part of the conspiracy though, not all of them, Adventure Summary: Scene 1: The players arrive at lyashii Sekinin Toshi (Humble Duty City). Their reasons for being there could be wide and varied (either they have their own, you have supplied some, or make use of those already provided). While there they have an entire day to look about the city and explore, visit, and gather what information they can, No matter what they choose to do, at some point they hear of the gumpukku ceremony of the Provincial Daimyo's son to take place tomorrow, Scene 2: The gempukku ceremony officially begins just after noon, but the gates of the daimyo's estate is open for all a couple hours before the ceremony to allow time for all to attend, Many Scorpion customs are observed and displayed during this portion, and it is here that many of the players will get their first taste of Rokugani society, and maybe meet a personality or two they did not meet earlier in the adventure. Some players may even be able to take part in the ceremony to display the eager youths skill to his lords and masters. ‘Scene3: That evening as the celebration takes hold and attentions are diverted, Scorpion players are led away to a private area for the secret gempukku challenge of the diamyo's son. It is after this that the Governor's attendant requests their aid in investigating one of the local farms just a short ride from the city. During this moment the Governor meets with various guests in his office during the night and takes a moment to have the other players summoned to his office to speak with them. He asks if they would like to have a ride as a guest in his lands and arranges for the ride to go through the farm he needs investigating. Scene 4: The farm is in an open field near a tiny brook. The players arrive and take time to rest from the ride, having some refreshment and fishing if desired. They meet the shoya (village headman) and maybe some of the other farmers, There has been a death recently, and some players (Scorpion ones in particular) will probably want to investigate. Scene 5: The shoya assists the players as best he can, and gives up his home to the players to stay the night if they wish to observe all that goes on. The players observe the delicate tending and watering of the field, and how dutiful the peasants guard the terrain, Scene 6: Players may confront the peasants on the night shift. A fight will ensue and the peasants will fight to the death. There will be no clues as to who was supporting them or where the obsidian was coming from so as to keep it open ended for you the game master. Scene1: A Most Welcome Iyashii Sekinin Toshi is a meager city when compared to others found in the Empire of Rokugan, but it’s size is a deceptive veil that distracts those who doubt it's importance. It is perhaps one of the most profitable cities in the lands of the Scorpion Clan, it's rice stores some of the most abundant from the vast fields that dominate the landscape. Having just arrived from a long trip on the Emperors roads, the gates of the city stand open, and a Scorpion guard stands ready to check travel papers. Residents are well known and admitted with little scrutiny other than a cursory check over any bundles they may have on them. Strangers to the guard will have their travel papers checked and a couple questions asked, such as the players purpose for visiting the city, and how long they intend to stay. Ronin will probably not have travel papers and will have their travel packs examined (ronin usually do not have travel papers but are admitted as ronin can always have uses). The guards stats can be found in the NPC appendix in case anyone wishes to attack one, or try to smuggle something past, or lie (for ease of creation a list of guards names are presented as well). Once admitted read the following: Finally setting foot inside the city proper, you look around to a clean and orderly city. The air is crisp and the sky is blue overhead. Very few buildings are above two floors tall with the exception of the central castle, and everyone walks about with a sense of security, Pairs of guards in red light armor bearing the mon of the Scorpion clan and wearing fierce black mempo are seen here and there as they walk patrols. While not bustling, it is a pleasant city, with much to explore. Allow the players a chance to explore the various locations in the city to get a feel for Rokugani society, as well as social interplay between the classes. The locations and their. linked NPCs are listed below. Check the city appendix for descriptions of these locations and what they offer, and the NPC appendix for information on the NPCs. Once players have had achance to explore for a while, or during their explorations they come across the following: ‘Word reaches your ears of a celebration of sorts occuring tomorrow. The Governor's son will ‘be going through his gempukku, and in true Scorpion tradition, anyone is welcome to attend the ceremony. Rumors, and notices posted about the city name the time as noon, to take place at the Governor's estate. Players have the chance to investigate what will occur at a gempukku, and what is expected of them at such. With the following skill checks the information is provided. Scorpion Clan players receive a Free Raise to the Lore- Great Clan [Scorpion] rolls. Zourtier (Gossip) TN 10; The Governor is Bayushi Konpaku. His son who will going ‘through his gempukku is his only child and stands to inherit the family duties. The family is well liked, and runs Iyashii Sekinin Toshi justly and efficiently. Courtier (Gossip) TN 15: Bayushi Konpaku was trained as a courtier to better administrate the city. His son has chosen the ‘bushi path, with his fathers approval. Konpaku's wife died a couple of years ago to an illness one winter, The family is rumored to be very well connected politically both among the Scorpio and outside the clan. Courtier (Gossip) TN 20: The city has been tightly run in recent days, with very little in the way of excess being spent. The gempukku ceremony is rumored to be costing the family a fair amount of koku. Even the random guests that show up can expect a gift of some fashion, and a good meal or two. Courtier (Gossip) TN 30; While Konpaku is spending a good amount of money on his sons gempukku ceremony, it is not known how it will effect the city afterwards. Rumor is among certain merchants that the governor has been offsetting some of the bad harvests with his personal and family wealth to protect the city and it's inhabitants. Spending such wealth, while necessary to save face and mask the hardship that few see, it makes those who do know worry what is to come after. Lore-Great Clan [Scorpion] TN 10: A Scorpion gempukku is held open to all, which is an oddity for a clan that prides itself on their secrecy. There are specially invited guests, but anyone nearbye who wishes to attend is welcome. Guests do not bring anything with them for their hosts. Lore-Great Clan [Scorpion] TN 15: Due to anyone being able to attend it is generally a good idea to arrive a couple hours early. The student going through the gempukku greets each guest personally and hands out a gift to cach one. This ritual takes a good amount of time. Gre IN20; Ata Scorpion gempukku the only Scorpion wearing a mask is the higest ranking Scorpion. In this case it is expected to be the Governor, The actual gempukku test is different for each person, and in some, guests have been selected or asked to help with the tests and challenges. Lore-Great Clan [Scorpion] TN 30: The Governor prides himself on the safety of his city, his duty to his clan, and the well-being of every citizen that lives under his protection. As such it is not widely known, but he places his most trusted men in the defense of the city walls and gates at such times, and calls out all reserve samurai and ashigaru to double the wall guards, and highten security at the mansion. It woud be unwise for anyone to attempt anything during such a time, and the city is at it's best defended during such times, Scene 2: Deceptive Display The morning air is cool for the time of year, and the line outside the Governor's estate is already rather long. The estate is behind a walled in compound, and several guards dressed in their best armor are placed at regular intervals around the walls. Banners and streamers of red and black hang down the walls in a display of a fathers pride in his son and his clan. The line inches forward at a steady pace, but comes to a halt as those actually invited are ushered to the front by servants of the family. ‘The line has not only peasants, farmers, and merchants, but also some other samurai from other clans who happened to be in the city at the time. The players will most likely meet each other in the line assuming they have not met each other yet as they line up right behind each other. A Scorpion gempukku wlecomes anyone to visit. It is no slight to those who show up without an invitation to wait in line while those invited are ushered ahead, rather a show of respect to those actually invited. After character introductions and some time to role-play out any random conversations the players may have for each other and an NPC or two in line, proceed on. Reaching the head of the line is a youth not more than fourteen years of age. He is dressed in traditional clothes of red and black, a golden obi that sparkles in the morning sun about his waist, His long black hair has a sheen to it that accents his olive tinted features. The women nearby blush when he casts a glance over the crowd and his gaze passes them, Behind him is a retinue of guards and assistants. He politely bows as you step before him, and with a pleasant voice greets you. "Good moming. You honor me with your presence.” This is where a few of the social traditions of the Empire and the Scorpion Clan will be demonstrated. The players will have to introduce themselves to the host as he has no clue who they are, It is polite to address him as "Bayushi-san” as it denotes equal or lower status with respect. The teenager is pleasant enough and is handed various crafis he has made by hand to the random guests that show up. These are handed to him by courtiers and assitants who stay at a slight bow to their young master. They select the gifts from the tables behind them. Each player will be gifted with something. Scorpion players will receive an origami scorpion with the phrase "I can swim," written on it's back (more on this later). Other players will receive any one of the following random gifts: +a wooden flute with the phrase "humble duty" *carved along the left side *an origami koi fish *a pinwheel *a wooden folding fan an origami crab *an origami crane It is polite custom to refuse a gift twice in Rokugan society. It allows the giver to demonstrate their sincerity with the gift. The manner in which it is refused, and the manner it is given after each refusal has become a form of courtly game, and allows the giver and the receiver to perform shows of respect, or slights against ones honor in subtle ways. This little tradition is part of what is holding, up the line. The peasants do not perform this with the young lord, but simply bow low, humbly, thank him, and pray for the Kami to watch over him, Samurai and merchants are seen to do the courtly game of refusal. After all players have received a gift and entered the estate proper, read the following: The path through the Governor's estate is flagged with flowing crimson and black banners bearing the mon of the Governor's family, a scorpion holding grain stalks in either pincer. The path leads around the main building, plain in it's design, but obviously of sturdy construetion and very defensible; through a small garden, to a training area for the guards of the estate. Bleachers have been erected for the guests to sit on, all looking down upon the boxed in square of sand. The players have a few minutes to chat around while the line outside dwindles down and people take their seats. Those invited at shown to cushioned seats along the front rows of each side of the square where guards and attendants await to fulfill any request. The following NPCs are in attendance in case players wish to interact with them, or feel free to introduce your own NPCs to develope a future plot point: Akodo Hitsu, Daidoji Kamnen, Doji Hatsuko, Hiruma Tadaka, Hirama Tanaka, Togashi Sentai. Once any interaction is done, please proceed. A low and resounding gong is struck behind the main podium, calling everyone to take their seats. The Governor, Bayushi Konpaku, makes his way to his seat, full retinue in tow, and sits down, his back straight. Moments later, his, son walks out into the center of the field, bows to his father, and stands, determination in his eyes. Konpaku raises his left hand, and every Scorpion in attendance reaches up and takes off his mask, so that the only one still wearing on is the Governor himself. Servants walk along the sides of the seats and collect all of the masks removed, and disappear from sight. The Governor lowers his hand and the gong is struck again "There is no greater honor a father can have, than to have a son deserving of his name and heritage." The Governors voice is moderate of tone, but volumous and spoken with a distinet air of authority. "Let us see if you are he." This is but another tradition among the Scorpion. During a genpukku ceremony, only the highest ranked Scorpion in attendance wears a mask. Scorpion players are required to do so. To not will be a resignation of their character as they are removed from the ceremony by guards, and then "never to be heard from again". The following are some of the tests the boy is put through, and if the players wish to know what they are, feel free to describe them in as much detail as you wish, or feel free to change them to some of your own ideas. They should be designed to test the martial skills of the boy, and display his reflexes, swiftness, and precision. *2 guards armed with wooden bokken attack the boy who is unarmed, he disarms them *3 guards with bokken attack the boy who has a bokken, he disarms them *2 guards with katana attack the boy who has a bokken, he disarms them *1 guard tosses wooden blocks at the boy, who slices them each before they hit him *2 guards with yari attack the boy who has a katana, he dances inside their reach The final test requires one of the guests. If no player volunteers then an NPC will step forward with a polite bow. The volunteer is placed in the center of the ring and an apple is placed on their head. The boy takes a yari and assumes a stance, focusing on the apple. The volunteer, if'a player, must make an Agility roll (TN 20) to keep the apple balanced on their head, Failure means it begins to roll off. In cither case the boy in a blur of motion strikes forth with the yari, and slowly brings it back, the apple pierced on the end of the blade. Obviously this will look more dramatic if the apple was falling down as the yari is lunged beside the persons head. The boy will bow, and the volunteer is lead back to their seat. The yar is taken away from the boy, who steps forward till he is in front of the dias where the Governor sits, and bows. Konpaku looks down upon his son and addresses him in a proud voice "One of the things our Clan is famous for is our unwavering commitment to any of our goals. We ill readily sacrifice ourselves for anything our superiors ask. It is always easy pay that price. However, it is much harder to sacrifice others, those closest to you. This is the burden of leadership. Are you prepared to take on this duty when I am no longer capable?" The boy raises from his bow. "I will be, when the time comes.” "Then take your name." Konpaku stands. and looks around at the many guests assembled, his plain black mask glistening in the sunlight. His son turns around to those gathered. "I am Bayushi Osato, Son of Bayushi Konpaku. I am) honored you could all be here today.” The Scorpion in attendance all begin to cheer. Scene 3: The Same Coin This scene is divided into two parts, one for Scorpion players (3A) and one for anyone else (3B). In order for a Scorpion to attend the secret gempukku ceremony, and the true gempukku of the Governor's son must first know where it will be held. This has already been given to them, The origami scorpion has written on it "I can swim" which is not only a phrase used among Scorpion, but is also an instruction. Unfolding the paper and placing it in water reveals hidden writing. The message reads "Second floor, third room on the left, dusk. Be discreet." This form of passing messages is not widely known, Scorpion players may roll Lore: Scorpion Clan with a TN 20 to know this, Alternatively they may make Investigation/Awareness to have noticed some Scorpion placing their scorpions in the pond in the garden, splashing the water around it, and mumbling something. Scorpion who can and do go to the secret gempukku may proceed to 3A, everyone else will be taking part in 3B. All Scorpion go through this secret gempukku. 3A: Tails in Shadow The celebration of the Governor's son passing his gempukku draws well into dusk, and as the sun begins to set, shadows of night begin to creep through the world, Lanterns are lit, drinks flow freely, food is passed around in abundance, and music is played. In the revelry, the Governor holds short private audiances with guests in his office, and in the overall distraction, a gathering of Scorpion meet in secret in an undisturbed part of the estate. The boy who has just completed his ‘gempukku is standing in the center of a small crowd of Scorpion. They are all wearing their masks again with the exception of the boy. This is the next part of the Scorpion gempukku. Unseen during the proceedings of the public ceremony, standing over watch of the secret ceremony is the sensei of the Saibankan's Legacy Dojo, Soshi Hiretsudo (Lore: Scorpion Clan TN 20, or standard Glory roll), The assembled Scorpion fall into silence as the man in black armor, bearing the mons of the Soshi family and of his position as a clan magistrate raises his hands and looks about. "We welcome our new brother among us, but before he can truly be called our brother, he must first undergo his gempukku." The ‘magistrates voice is stern and calm, holding with it an authority that speaks of great experience. The youth looks around confused, but quickly hides his uncertainty wit a determined look and a slight bow. “Tam ready sesei-sama." ‘The magistrate grins slightly. "Tell us then, what did you leam about every guest in attendance today. Your answers will either show you capable to either sink or swim." The boy proceeds to list every guest by name, and what he learned not only from thier reactions to the gifts, but also what he learned from talking briefly with several of them, what rumors he heard about them from other guests, as well as a few juicy bits of information the players may wish to take note of: *Akodo Hitsu has a slight gambling problem that he's been able to hide from his lord for now. *Daidoji Kamnen appears to have had, or is having, an affair with a married Yoritomo woman. *Doji Hatsuko is tormented by bad dreams, more frequently then she would let on. *Hiruma Tadaka and Hiruma Tanaka are rumored to have left their previous scout commander for dead in the shadowlands on their last patrol, or murdered for some reason as yet unknown. *Togashi Sentai has been traveling around alot more than should be permissable from ones lord, which could be a sign of her lords disapproval of her, What exactly her shame is can not be determined as of yet. Once the boy is done, proceed on. The sensai gives a slight nod of approval, and Osato bows low to his teacher. "Well done Osato-san. You will prove one day to be a most capable Governor, and a student any teacher would be proud to claim as one of their own." The sensei reaches over to one of the Scorpion beside him, opens a cherry-wood box he had been holing, and removes a black and crimson mask, emblazoned with gold foil etchings on it and places the mask on Osato’s face. “Take your ancestors mask with honor Osato-san. As it has been handed down through the generations, your father passes it to you." Scorpion players are handed letters from the Governor, instructing them to accompany Myko on her ride in the morning, and to lend what assitance they can. There are no other instructions or details. 3B: Heads Above the Rest You are lead into the Governor's office deep inside the estate. The halls are moderatly furnished, and so is the room you find yourselves in, Very little in the way of art or frivilous decoration is found. Instead each item or momento you have seen seems to bear at least some degree of reverance to the family, clan, or city, Sitting opposite a small table, he bows slightly as you enter and beckons you to sit down with him, "Welcome honorable guests. I am pleased you could make time to witness my sons gempukku, I am Bayushi Konpaku, Governor of Nezuban Province." Konpaku will wait for introductions, and will then address players by their family name followed by -san, Players should address him as Bayushi-sama, or Governor-sama since he is of higher status. He will make small talk with them and ask many questions to help the players fill in the backstory of their characters. Such questions would be *Where have you traveled from? *What brings you to Iyashii Sekinin Toshi *Are you going to be here long? *What did you think of my sons skill? *Where are you going to be bound for? *Have you found the city to your liking? Allow the players who say they are looking about the room with a purpose to perform, an Investigation (Search) / Perception roll with a TN of 20. Those who were not directly looking around may make an Investigation (Notice) / Awareness roll with a TN of 30. Success means they notice that there are some places in the room where items may once have been resting for some time, but are there no longer. A brighter spot on the wall where a painting may have been, or an indentation in the flooring in the corner where a large vase may have stood for years. It would be a horrible breach of etiquette to mention such things however. When questions are finished proceed on. ‘The Governor stands and bows slightly to you all. "T hope I can interest you in a ride of the countryside tomorrow? It is very rare for us to have this many guests in the city, it would feel a failure in my duties if I were to allow so many honorable men and women to leave without showing my fullest hospitality. I will have a guide ready tomorrow moming, and horse for you to borrow. Consider it a gift, in honor of my sons sgenpukku.” Konpaku has wrangled the players into going on the ride tomorrow by way of making it a gift. The players should refuse twice, but refusing a third time will of course be a huge slander to the Governor. Should they wish to not go they will ear his emnity, Players are free to end the night how they wish, for once they leave the Governors room and are guided back outside the party is winding down and night is full upon the world. How they spend the evening is their choice, but they will soon be guided outside the estate into to city. Scene 4: So Can Fish Just outside the north gate of the city a group of saddled horses waits, a woman in Scorpion clothes already mounted watches over them. Her gaze turns from the horses to you as she hears the sound of your approach. "Good moming honorable guests of the Governor. Iam Bayushi Myko." She gives a slight bow from up on her horse. "It is my honor to be your guide today on your ride." Her description is part of her entry in the NPC appendix. She will make small talk and answer non-secretive questions as best as she can The ride around the province leads the players across some very beautiful country. Vast plains, leading into some slight hills, flowers blooming in parts of various colors. They also pass by a farming community or two. Myko seems to be leading them in a random way about the province. Around mid-day the party approaches one of the farthest farming communities which rests near a small stream. During the ride Myko will not take them very fast so as not to cause players to roll for Horsemanship. ‘As the sun reaches it's highest point in it's journey across the sky, your party slowly trots up toa small farming community. The fields to the south of it are filled with an orchard, and the fields to the north have been flooded for rice. The fields you are riding past now however are those to the east and have been tilled for grains. Workers can be seen in the field working even now, dusting it from buckets and rooting out anything that may be a harm to the crop. The farmers bow low as you ride by, and a man from the town walks out to greet you. "Good afternoon samurai-samas," he says with a cheerful voice as he bows low. " I am Shichiroji, shoya of this village. Welcome." He is an amiable sort of fellow. He is devout, and despite the troubles that plague the farm under his care, he has implemented several changes that have been helping the syptoms, but have not stopped them, nor discovered the cause. Not one to bring up such a touchy subject as he doesn't want to lose his position, he instead takes, the players to his house. The shoya calls over a couple peasants and has them lead your horses away to be washed and tended, With another bow he leads you to his home. Going through the village you notice how clean it is, not what you would expect from a farming village. Shichiroji's house is the largest of those in the village, but still meager in comparison ot what you are used to, Ithas very few comforts, and he invites you to sit down at a table while some drinks are prepared. "Iti truly an honor to have visitors such as yourselves. The tea will be prepared soon. If you are here for the fishing I could find some spare poles, as I notice you didn’t bring any." ‘The Governor sometimes stops by this village to visit the stream that passes by it for some fishing. While not frowned upon by samurai society, it is one of the questionable activities. Some see it beneath a samurai, but others realize the peaceful medidative aspects as well as the reflective struggle between man and nature. If the players wish they may head to the river for some fishing (4B) after their brief rest from the moming ride, They may also prefer to ask some questions of the shoya, to which if they might infer something is wrong he will brush it away with dismissive comments such as "Every farm has problems" and the like. After a while of chatting there is a disturbance while the players are enjoying their tea, The door to the shoya’s house slides open rather quickly, and a farmer, sweat beading on his forehead, tries ot catch his breath as he stares in, "Shichiroji-san!” ‘The farmer instantly realises his breach of etiquette as his eyes land on the room full of visitors and bows low to the ground, "I'm sorry Shichiroji-san, I didn't know you had guests. Please forgive me." "There is nothing to forgive Tenbo," Shichiroji keeps a calm and cool expression, "T left you orders to inform me of any issues you may have." The shoya stands with a bow to you all "Please forgive the intrusion and enjoy your tea. ‘Tenbo is one of my shift overseers. I shall not be long." Shichiroji steps just outside the door and slides it shut behind him. The voices are mufiled because of the door, and players may make an Investigation/Perception TN 25. Success allows them to gather enough from the conversation to ‘understand what is being talked about. The farmer who arrived has discovered that one of the workers was late reporting for his shift, Checking into the workers house, the farmer discovered that he was still in bed. Calling out to him, and then moving up to wake him, he discovered that he was dead. It was then he rushed for the shoya. Affier a few moments of discussion occurs outside, Shichiroji re-enters without the farmer who came for him. "I am sorry samurai-samas for that interruption. Please make yourselves at home as long as you wish, enjoy the tea, and please let me know if you would like to go fishing or have any questions. I must attend to a matter that requires my attention." He will answer any questions as best he can, and while reluctant to mention the death, he will do so, knowing it would be unwise to hide something the samurai might know, He does not know what caused the death, but he suspects age, as the man in question was rather old. If the players wish to look into the matter themselves proceed to Scene 5. Scene 4A: A Calming Moment (optional) The stream trickles on past the lands to the west of the farm as it bends around from the north. The water is clear as it rolls along over a stone laden bed, but wide and deep anough to help mask the fish as they swim in it's water, Those who wish to look into what may be hurting the farms land may wish to investigate the stream as the main source of water for some of the fields. Shugenja may cast Commune with ‘Water kami gaining an extra raise for clarity. The water is clear and there are no pollutants. The stream flows from a pool farther up north, to the north-east of the farm, and that is clear as well of pollutants. Some players may wish to fish here for a while. They may make use of the following new skill: New Skill: Fishing (Agility ‘Sub-Type: Merchant Emphasis: Fresh Water, Salt Water Description: Use of this skill is a form of meditation to some, and a way of life to others. If using this skill to catch fish for eating or barter, the TN is based on how many fish you wish to catch, how long you will be fishing, and what type of fish (based on the GMs discretion). Wishing to catch enough to feed yourself for a couple of days requires a TN 15 for a couple hours of fishing as an example. If using this skill as a form of meditation and relaxation, roll against a TN of 30. Either regain 1 Void Point, or gain a Free Raise against your next emotional trigger for the day (such as the Lost Love disadvantage or making a roll to Fear). You may only benefit from this option k. res of fishing once a Ce Scene 5: Common As Mud Phe interest of some may make those players want to investigate the dead farmer. Shichiroji assures them he feels it's probably just a mundane reason like old age or overworked. Scene 5A deals with investigating the hut where the man was found dead, Scene SB deals with investigating or visiting the fields where the work hhas been done the past week. Scene 4A deals with the stream that feeds to rice fields and is one of the major sources of water. The other sources of water are a well which works fine and is clean, and a bath house in the village which is also clean and works fine. SA: Death Knocks Once The door to the hut is closed to all but a sliver, the light from the day falling into the darkness of the room inside. Sliding open the door chases the shadows inside away revealing the body of a man laying with his back to the door. This is probably the players introduction ot the legal system of Rokugan. Evidence does not carry much weight when it comes to accusing the guilty. Instead Rokugan relies upon testimony to damn the guilty. In an age where the Kitsuki Method is accepted evidence gains some weight, but still not as much as testimony. That does not stop investigators from looking for evidence (one must know where to direct ones efforts after all), Evidence gained through magic is supposed to have no bearing upon guilt or innocence, but like iis good to have to guide the stigators to the guilty. Doing a cursory glance about the room it is obvious to notice the following: *The mans hands have dirt upon them. There is a little bit of dirt upon the floor near the door. *There is a distinct smell of smoke in the air of the room *It is impossible to determine tracks outside as it is a well traveled path. If players wish to examine farther allow Investigation (Search)/Perception checks with the following TNs: TN 15: The smoke smell is coming from the candle which has burned out sometime in the carly morning. There are slight dirt stains on the cuff of the gi sleeve (the shirt he is wearing). TN 20: Not only does the man have dirt on his hands, but there is a good portion of soil caked under his nails. The inside of the mans sleeves have a good portion of dirt. There are no dirt stains upon the belt of the mans gi. If there is a shugenja who wishes to commune, they get the following difficulties and responses: jr: The air kami in this village, as with several populated areas of the Scorpion, stay agitated so it is harder for other clans shugenja to acquire Scorpion secrets. As such the air kami here will only answer a question with a question of their own about a random topic ("Why does your nose have hair but your eyes do not?"). If given a secret though about either the player, or a truthful secret about someone they know the air kami will impart only one helpful clue - "He had no use for us when he came home." This is their way of saying he was dead when he got home. Fire: The only fire kami left is from the ember in the whick of the dead candle. Because of it's weakness it requires 2 raises to be able to successfully call it, It will languidly state, as it's, last moments of burning are waning - "I had a wonderous moment of burning. I saw the sun set, illuminated the room, and now get to see the sun ascend. I only wish the man could have enjoyed my light more. He left when the sun was gone." It does not recall the man coming back as it was begining to go out before then and has no memory of that moment. ‘There is no water in here to call. Earth: This one has multiple opportunities. There is the soil on the mans hands and clothes, which no matter how many raises, feel devoid of earth kami. The soil outside however can be coaxed with one raise for clarity. "I know the man inside, he left during the night, and came back with three others, who left a while after." It however can not identify the men as to it, all humans look the same. It's a rather base earth kami, If players wish to make a Medicine (Wound Treatment)/Intelligence roll against a TN of 15, the man apparently was strangled to death (by hand) after receiving a blow to the back of the head with a round or blunt object. Shichiroji will not enter the room so long. as the players are in there (unless called in) as he does not wish to get in the way. His only concern is to arrange a funeral for the man. If his attention is called to the dirt, he will find it odd. Shichiroji raises an eyebrow at the mention of the dirt upon the mans hands and clothes. "That does seem odd samurai-samas. I've set up several conditions by the grace of the Governor so as to better safeguard the crops we grow here. To cut down on the potential for disease we have strict rules about cleanliness, even going so far as to have a small bath-house. There is no reason why he should have gone to bed in such a state." There are no other clues in the place. SB: Toil and Trouble The fields being presently worked on and watched are just north of the village. A long pasture of vegetables is being carefully planted behind a team that is tilling the soil, which is moving behind the tracks of a team that is sprinkeling dark, rich soil upon the ground from buckets. The field rotation works in three shifts of 8 hours each. Breaks for meals are customary. Due to the size of the village, the teams are small so work goes slow, but it is continuous. As the players approach Shichiroji explains this if he is with them, Not wanting to risk some animal getting into the crop, or having something unexpected occur, they rely on having someone on watch at all times, and the most efficient way to do that is to have a working team at all times. The results can not be denied, as these fields are the most plentiful in the province. In times of little rain, a water cart is led to the stream and filled. The cart is then used to water the various fields of the farm. Casting Earth spells while in or near the field requires 1 Raise with no benefit, as it is hard to call forth the earth kami here. If players wish to examine farther allow Investigation (Search)/Perception checks with the following TNs: 10: The soil being sprinkled to fertilize the field is of the same color as the soil on the dead mans hands and clothes, IN 15: Some of the crops already growing in ajoining fields do not look as healthy as they should. The soil is not dry so there has been plenty of water. TN 25: You notice a pair of sandals half buried in the ground. Upon asking, that area was tilled and planted last night. Shichiroji identifies them as belonging to the dead man. If there is a shugenja who wishes to commune, they get the following difficulties and responses: Air: No Air kami present were around last night. Fire: There are no fire kami present, though it is known the night shift use lanters. Water: There is fresh water in the soil that can be coaxed to the surface with 2 Raises. Last night it was poured out into the ground, and when it started ot seep in it felt a burning, sickening sensation. Earth: Despite being in a field, the earth kami here are very hard to call forth with any clarity. With a simple casting one realizes they are reclusive and agitated. With 2 Raises for clarity (making 3 total), one can make out their cries of pain and torment as they try and flee from the field, falling over cach other as they do so. None of the workers on the morning shift (8am till 4 pm) have seen the dead man since he went to sleep yesterday afternoon. If asking the evening shift (4pm till midnight) none of them recall seeing him during their shift. The night shift will not be on till midnight and are all asleep. A shugenja may wish to cast something to reveal hidden items which if the sandals from above are not discovered will be revealed, and the entire field has a slight aura about it. Some players may want to question the workers of the night shift before they start their shift. Shichiroji will be adverse to this as he doesn’t want the system he has in place disrupted, but he has no authority to stop them. The workers are grumbly at having been woken up early, but bow with respect to the samurai. They claim to know nothing of the dead man, while an Investigation (Interrogation)/Perception Roll TN 25 will reveal they are not being truthful. There is no one else to say anything otherwise, and players may wish to slay these peasants for lying to them. If so they will earn the emnity of the Governor for failing to find the cause of the disturbance to his farms and the willful murder of those under his protection. They need to catch these culprits in the act. Scene 6: All Revealed In Darkness The evidence that can be found up to this point is not proof. The only thing that can be used against the criminals is testimony of some fashion, The players need witnesses to what is going on, even if it is themselves. ‘The blue light of night waves across the ground as clouds drift before the glowing moon, ‘The workers go about their nightly toil. A pair of them carry lanterns for the workers while another pair begins to patrol around the field with lanterns of their own. The rest grab their tools and begin to work, dusting, tilling, and planting, If the players request it, Shichiroji will be with them, otherwise he will be asleep at this time. Allow the players an Investigation (Notice) / Perception Roll with a TN of 25 if they are watching the general area, or with a TN of 15 if they are specifically paying attention to the workers. Success means they notice that there is, one more worker than there was at the start of the shift. They have their head low, covered by a wide-brimmed hat. This individual is standing with those who are dusting, and filling their buckets with something from a sack. The players may decide to take action now and either step out of hiding (if doing so), or walk up and confront the workers if standing guard. Upon begining to approach the new figure proceed on: ‘The workers seem to know that they have been discovered. Those with lanterns drop them, shattering them upon the ground, causing the flames to cast strange shadows about the field. Together they scramble for sticks and trowels, others simply getting a firmer grip on their buckets. The look in their eyes tells of a deathly desperation. If they spotted the stranger they lose sight of him in the flurry of motion by the farmers. He is nowhere to be seen and does not appear again in this fight or adventure. There are 3 Disloyal Farmers per player. They fight to the death, If one is detained other farmers try to kill that farmer. Farmer (3 per Earth 2 Water 2 Air 1 (Awareness 2) Fire | (Intelligence 2) Void 1 Attack Roll: 3k2 Damage Roll: 2k1 Armor TN: 10 Special: While the Disloyal Farmers are a threat, they use the "Thug" rules found on page 317 of the core book. One hit, doing at least 1 ‘wound, will kill one of these thugs unless a player uses an attack that does damage but was done to capture one, allow them to do so. The low attributes reflects their exposure to the substance they are planting in the soil. They also can not use any Void Points. The weapons they use are reflective of what's on hand (trowels, buckets filled with sand, poles, ect. NOTE: This combat is meant to introduce Jayers to the com em of the game, ani such is meant to be more cinematic, and not intended to kill the players, If it looks as if the Farmers are doing too good, have a few take the opportunity to run away (or attempt to Once the fight is done some of the other farmers lead by Shichiroji arrive on the scene, having been roused by the ruckus. He will want an explanation, and the players can discover that the buckets the defeated farmers were using were filled with a black sand. An appropriate Lore Skill Roll (TN 15), or an Intelligence Roll (TN 25) will reveal that the black sand loks to have the sparkling consistency of ground obsidian. While not all obsidian is tainted, the effects upon the field would probably make it a safe bet that this black sand has some degree of taint or disease associated with it, The next morning, Shichiroji meets you all as you make ready to depart his little village and bows low in gratitude. Thank you samurai-samas for your generosity in helping put a stop to these vile crimes against the Emperors humble servants. We shall remember you always, and should you ever be in the area and require rest or fresh supplies, please do not hesitate to stop by for a warm welcome." He reaches into his shirt and draws out a sealed letter, handing it to Myko. “This is my account of what has occured, and my request for shugenja to purify the fields." "[ will see my lord receives it Shichiroji You continue to honor my lord with your service and dedication." She places the letter in her saddle pouch. With a spur of the horses you begin the short ride back to Iyashii Sekinin Toshi. Conclusion: If the players were able to discover the obsidian sand and defeat the disloyal farmers Bayushi Konpaku praises your efforts on his behalf, even though such was not asked of you. Such compassion will always be remembered. ‘The players receive 1 exp, 0.2 Honor and 0.2 Glory. They also receive a minor favor owed to them by Bayushu Konpaku. They also receive Shichiroji as a minor ally (do to his status as a meager peasant he has no influence or status but could be of worth if the players operate in this, province again). If the players defeated the disloyal farmers but did not discover the obsidian sand: Bayushi Konpaku accepts your word that something was amiss with those you dispatched, but is troubled at the brashness with which you acted. You have a feeling your activities will be watched while in his province from now on. The players receive 1 exp. It is unsure what Konpaku will do, but he will keep tabs on the players while they are in his provinee, or in neighboring provinces. If any player explored the city or watched the gempukku and participated either in talking with NPCs or being part of the gempukku they gain 1 exp. If any player investigated the farm or went to the river to investigate or fish they gain I exp. If any player completes their assigned Clan/Organization specific tasks they gain 1 exp and 0.2 Status. Appendix 1: Iyashii Sekinin Toshi Iyashii Sekinin Toshi rests in the northem plains of Nezuban Province, in the southeastern ‘most part of the Scorpion lands. The province is under the control of the Bayushi, and it represents a meager holding in comparison to other more ‘grand locations held by that Clan, Directly to the north in Beiden Province one can find Kagoki in the Yogo lands, which is the more recognized location. Humble Duty City however is aptly named, What it lacks in appeal, size, or political worth, it more than makes up for in economic value. There are those who would consider it a folly of a Great Clan to wall in a city that is barely large enough to carn that title, Technically it would constitute a town, if not for the fact the Provincial Governor calls Humble Duty his home. The position of Provincial Governor has been held by the same family since the creation of Humble Duty, It has no real prospect for political gain associated with it, but itis a respected title among the Scorpion Clan. Humble Duty is the central rice depository of the southern Scorpion Clans farmlands, and as such warrants some rather sizeable protection. Being as remote as itis from other cities or military targets, it holds no worth as ‘a military target other than the rice it holds. The military forces alloted to Humble Duty are more than adequate to defend it against a siege for weeks, and is perhaps one of the worst loctions an enemy army could hope to attack, for the simple fact that the main method of siege warfare (forced starvation) can not be used. The city was originally designed to be an outpost, but over the centuries the walls had to be ‘expanded to accomodate merchants who set up shop in the city to trade with travelers, and for the families of the soldiers, farmers, and merchants who called the place home. Trade between the Scorpion Clan can be had here, and merchants from the Crab, Crane, and Mantis Clans each have locations set up to sell their wares, A few taverns can be found, as well as a bath house, a sake works, a hostlery, and various other means of entertainment, business, and leisure. Governor's Estate: This building is the only building over ‘two stories tall, It also has it's own set of walls just as high as the exterior city walls that make it a last resort position should the outer walls be breached in a siege. It was originally placed in the center of the city, but as the walls expanded south, it now can be found in the northern portion of the city. Within the estate is the tenshukaku (castle keep) where the Governor's family resides and where the Governor holds court. Connected to it are several smaller buildings for servants and the personal guards of the Governor's family. Around the tenshukaku is the main entrance way, the path of which travels through a trio of torii arches, each carved with beautiful reliefs and devotionals to Inari, Fortune of Rice. The gravel paths leads up to the main entrance of the tenshukaku from the wall, but also encircles the tenshukau, going through a peaceful garden where a bridge crosses a small koi pond. The plants are taken good care of, and it is always considered a treat to walk through and enjoy it's siple design and basic nature. ‘To one side rests a sand square as a training yard for the guards of the keep, as well as a demonstration area. On the other side is a smaller garden with a small building that houses the family shrine to the ancestors of the Governor's family. Garrison Barracks: ‘The barracks for the guards and samurai of the village can be found a stones throw from the Governor's estate in the northwestern section of the city. It is a campus containing rooms for the guards, as well as a armory, and a training grounds. A small stone fence encircles the compound, and guards stand at the entrance, Only those on official business are permitted within The captain of the guard is a morose and stern man, Yogo Michio. scuttlebutt among the city is that he was not assigned to his post, so much as requested for the post b the Governor, While it is odd for a Yogo to be placed in a position of any dependance, no one questions the Governor's decisions. Known to very few, and almost impossible to uncover, is the fact that Yogo Michio 's curse manifested when he had to hunt down his best friend of 5 years and drag him to the Grove. Since then he has specialized in hunting down traitorous Scorpion, a set of skills that helps keep the city guards loyal and free of those who become corrupt. Warehouse District: Perhaps the largest section of the city. This area has a waist high stone wall that surrounds it, with regular patrols of guards covering all lines of sight inside and out at all times, During night it is the most well lit in the city, It is nigh impossible to sneak into this section of the city, and for good reason. This is where the bulk of the rice and grains from the farming villages are stored and catalogued for taxes and distribution. It covers a good fourth of the city, stretching from all along the easter side, Protective wards help maintain the security of the warehouses, and cats are let loos in the city to keep any rodent or pest problems under control. There is usually a priest of the clan in this sector at all times along with the guards. Civilian Residence: This covers the rest of the city itself, from the stretching out to the western wall and the southern wall. This area contains all residential housing, as well as merchants, hotels, sake houses, geisha houses, and any other form of legal business permitted, all setting up where room can be found. There is no set area for businesses and housing, so it is a strange place to navigate. Thankfully it is not as large as some other cities, but the residents are usually friendly enough to direct one where they want to go. Walking down a path itis likely for one to pass by a couple homes, then a shop, then more homes, then a sake house ora smithy. There is always an open space or two as it is hard for some business to survive in so remote a location. Tranquil Sunset Bathhouse: This establishment caters to everyone with affordable rates and friendly service, up to the rich visitor with exceptional music to go with a steaming bath and massage in fragrant oils and scents. A small rock waterfal and basin is used for the washing ane ombing of hair. This establishment can cater to upwards of 5 normal customers and three wealthy at one time. It is run by an elegant woman of moderate age, Lady Kyuni. She has no real title, but every calls her "Lady" because of her poise and patient nature. Henshin's Smithy: Henshin is from the Crab provinces to the south, He is reputed to be the best smithy in Nezuban province, and as such is constantly busy with work. From the first rays of sun cracking through nights cloak till the last rays surrender to the same drape, the clang of iron hammer on metal can be heard in his bellows, accompanied by the hissing of steam. Henshin doesn't speak much, not having much to do with talk, but when he does, it’s usually soemthing worth saying. He is a burly and scruffy character, as one would expect from Crab lands. First Brew Sake House: No need to ‘mention that if someone asks for a sake house they will be directed to the First Brew Sake House. Itis the favorite among the locals. It get’ the name from the local rice itself, and this is the place where the first brew of each batch of local sake is dropped off. Local company and local sake made from local rice makes this a favorite and frequent place for everyone to visit. Impromptu games or music can be found on occasion as well once the sake begins to flow, and tables of shogi, go, or Favors and Fortunes are frequent. The establishment is clean and friendly being run by locals who have a hand in the brewery of the local sake. They are an elderly couple (Masaaki and his wife Chinatsu) that partially own the brewery and fully own the sake house. They have one child who has gone to the Crane lands to learn from a brew master there so will not be present for a while. The local blend of sake is called Early Frost sake, as it has a distinctly cool after taste despite being served warm. It is not as famous as some blends as itis, not distributed much outside of Nezuban province or it's neighboring provinces. Imlcy's Emporium: Run by a merchant from the Mantis lands, bearing the gaijin name of Imley. His skin is darker than normal Rokugani, and looks slightly out of place in his Mantis. clothing styles among the residents of the city, but he is always welcoming with a friendly smile, and can seemingly get his hands on anything that is required by anyone that comes to call, if given some time to have it delivered. He is reputed to make quite a bit of money, and welcomes any form of competition as he would grow bored if it was just himself selling goods. One oddity in his shop is his pet monkey he claims to have brought over from the Mantis Isles. It causes no harm, and children love laughing at it's crazy antics. On outings Imley dresses it up in either a Mantis sailors vest, or in a little green kimono and straw hat, Appendix 2: NPCs Governor Bayushi Konpaku Bayushi Courtier 5 Status: 5.6 Honor: 4.8 Glory: 3.1 Earth 3 Stamina 3 Willpower Water 3 Strength 3 Perception $ Air3 Reflexes 3 Awareness 5 Fire 4 Agility 5 Intelligence 4 Void 3 Armor TN to be Hit: 20 Wounds - Healthy (+0) _O00000000000000 Nicked (+3) 000000 Grazed (+5) 000000 Hurt (+10) 000000 Injured (+15) 000000 Crippled (+20) 000000 Down (+40) 000000 Out 000000 Skills: Calligraphy 4, Commerce 8, Courtier (Gossip) 5, Engineering 4, Etiquette 4, Fishing 5, Horsemanship 5, Investigation 3, Kyujutsu 6, Lore: Heraldry 5, Lore: History 5, Lore: Scorpion Clan 6, Lore: Theology 4, Sincerity (Deceit) 5, Tea Ceremony 6, Temptation 3 Advantages: Allies (numerous), Clear Thinker, Gentry (Province), Hero of the People, Servant (numerous), Social Position (Governor) Disadvantages: Bad Eye Sight, Disbeliever, Lost Love Bayushi Konpaku is a man in his early 40s, though all his life his eyesight has been poor. His calm and understanding manner in all things has allowed him to oversee operations in the province in a just and fair manner. He is also known to sacrifice more than a samurai would for the benefit of the people under his charge While he doesn't get outside of the city much, he does indulge in innocent activities such as the occasional fishing trip. While he pays respect to the kami, he keeps his true beliefe hidden. He has seen much to shape his opinion of the fate of man in a world controlled by spirits. Nothing broke his faith in the kami more so than the death of his wife Manami, a beautiful and uncommonly kind woman. Since that dreadful day he goes through the motions of religious ceremonies and ritual, but cares nothing for what others claim as the Celestial order, instead relying upon his own organization, strength, and will. He would run from his guardians and hide throughout the city. He's made several friends among the residents, and has grown up a hero of the people for his kindness and influence in seeing the right aide got to the right people in need. He suffers from the family lines bad eye sight, but this has so far not hindered his training While his father was trained as a courtier, Osato has chosen to follow the path of the clans magistrates so that he may better understand the law, and have the martial training to defend the city should it ever be assaulted. She herself never had a good head for such things as she only focused on her training and, missions. Her parents had to commit sepukku for such gross neglegance of their assets provided by the family daimyo. Setting out of her own accord she tracked her way across the Empire hunting down. those responsible. She was never able to get a name but the trail ended with the Crane Clan and a trail of bodies in her wake. Her sensei were debating about expelling her from the dojo for such rash action, but Bayushi ‘Konpaku came to her defense. He recognized the skills she displayed, and though she has not been able to find out which Crane was responsible, he has taken it upon himself to see to it that she finishes her training, and keeps an open ear for information that ‘may help her, in exchange for having a trusted vassal with such deadly skills and the will to use them at a ‘moments notice. She is known amongst the guards of Humble Duty City as "the queen wasp", Her beauty is hard to ‘miss even with the masks she wears, but she has never had anout sitors or offers of marriage. However, since he was young, he has had a weakness for games of chance, dares, and bets. He has also been a rather unlucky sort in his life. Among the samurai of the empire, there is a bug that can sometimes take root, and this bug is greed. The need for praise, for promotion, for recognition. With Hitsu, he does have this bug for glory is soemthing that all Lion are raised to respect, but his need for this has evolved into a need for material gain as well. He has accomplished already in gaining a revered sword for his performance in his gempukku which he carries with pride, but itis just the tip of the iceberg. He will attampt to gain what he can, but not in a way to harm his duty or reputation. A small amount of jealousy is to be expected among the Crane as displays of skill are rewarded. Kamnen however has always been dead set on doing everything not only to the best of his ability, but to utter perfection. He sees the trait as the basic idea of the Crane Clan. He trains incesantly so that when he does perform his duties, they are done to perfection. This has caused a bit of friction among some of his other Crane as they see his pursuit as something unbecoming of a samurai, and arguments always arise during such times. ‘There is no denying though that Kamnen is a well trained and effective yojimbo, so his superiors have assigned him to watch over what could be one of the most valuable assets of the Crane Clan, while at the same time ridding him from their presence. He is a man not long after his gempukku (carly 203) and of striking features. He carries himself as a threat, but appears unimposing with a lithe frame more suited for a scout than a yojimbo. No one but the Scorpion Champion and Hatsuko knows what the painting was of, and it's doubtful anyone else will ever find out, but rumors began to circulate about her abilities. lll that is whispered is that she suffers from nightmares, headaches, and her paintings have been known to carry a bit of truth to them, ‘Not knowing exactly what to do with Hatsuko, the Crane Clan has decided ot let her wander as she wishes as they watch her movements and try to make sense of her. She is a woman in her mid 20s, long flowing black hair that is usually tied up. She dresses proper and in traditional Crane colors for the season, Rarely will she instigate a conversation, but will not shun from one. Her voice is dainty, yet can command an entire court chamber when she begins to recount a tale, or explain one of her paintings. Her daimyo has yet to call her back, and her husband has not requested her return either. Her husband is a Unicorn, and Ide trained as a courtier, but due to the contracts arranged was married into the Dragon. The marriage was all part of an elaborate trade and border contract, between the Dragon and Unicom, a marriage that neither of them wanted. To say that they have spent a good deal of time together would be a gross overstatement. Since the marriage, either has done their best to not be near the other. When Sentai is home her husband has to attend court affairs, and when he is home she walks about the Empire. Talk of why they have no children yet has come up from their lords among the Dragon, and neither has given any real explanations. Sentai wishes that she may be slain in some skirmish or bandit attack before she returns home, when such. a question will have to be answered, or rectified. She is a muscular woman, wearing typical monks clothing, her tattoos showing on her bare arms and cheeks. She does not shave her head, but instead has her hair long, tied up in one long braid. If possible, find this ‘woman, and take a measure of her. Do nothing against her, but instead watch and listen. Either she is reponsible, or could potentially lead us to those who are, but we can not risk angering the local Governor. Dragon - The road of life twists and tums beneath our feet. We do not move, so much as the road itself moves. Let the road move, and take in any new experiences that may come before you, Lion - This box was discovered by one of our samurai recently in a waystation, It bears the Scorpion mon and letter. We have not opened the box as the letter requests no one do so but it's intended. [the box resembles a wakizashi box] Mantis - One of our merchants, a man by the name of Imley, has a shop in Humble Duty City. Find it, him, and his pet monkey at some point during your time there. While chatting, look to the monkey and hand it the enclosed koku coin as you say the phrase "Here you are you rascal." Do not act as if you are hiding this motion, for the Scorpion are always watching, This worthless ruse will keep their attentions focused on Imley and his monkey, and less o on other places.
