Tessellation Project
Part 1:

Materials: graph paper, Cardstock paper (4 Colors needed), Scissors, Glue Stick, plain
paper
Directions: THERE ARE SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS! IF YOU FOLLOW STEP BY STEP, YOU WILL
COMPLETE THE PROJECT CORECTLY:

1. Grab a piece of card stock graph paper and draw your x and y axis on the
graph paper.
2. Graph these points in quadrant 4 and be sure to label all the points:
A : (3, -3)
B : ( 9, -3)
C : ( 9, -9)
D : (3, -9)
I : (7, -3)
J : (5, -3)
K : (9, -5)
L: (9, -7)
M : (5, -9)
N : (7, -9)
P : (3, -5)
Q : (3, -7)
Connect these points, they should make a square
3. Graph these points and connect them to the points listed:
E : (6, -4) and connect to the points I and J
F: (12, -6) and connect to the points K and L
G : (6, -6) and connect to the points M and N
H : (2, -6) and connect to points P and Q

5. Graph the points A, B, C, D, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q for a 90 degree rotation and

connect these points. They should form a square (HINT: your new points
should be in the 1st quadrant)
6. Graph points E, F, G, and H for a 90 degree rotation by following the
directions below:
Connect E to I and J
Connect F to K and L
Connect G to M and N

8. Graph the points A, B, C, D, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q for a reflection over the yaxis and connect these points. They should form a square (HINT: your new
points should be in the 3rd quadrant)

9. Graph points E, F, G, and H for a reflection over the y-axis by following the
directions below:

Answer the questions below:

1. From figure 1 to figure 2 what rotation took place?

2. What type of reflection took place from figure 1 to figure 3?

3. What symmetry took place from figure 2 to figure 4?

Part 2
1. Cut out each image. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT OFF THE WRONG PART OF THE
IMAGE!
Example:

YOUR CUT
IMAGE OF
FIGURE 1
SHOULD
SOMETHING
LIKE THIS

OUT
LOOK

2. Trace figure 1, 4 times on a piece of colored cardstock paper of your choice.

3. Repeat what you did for figure 1 for figure 2, 3 and 4. Use a different color of
cardstock paper for each figure.
o All figure 1s should be the same color.
o all figure 2s should be the same color.
o All figure 3s should be the same color.
o All figure 4s should be the same color.
4. By the time you are done, you should have 4 copies of each figure and each figure
should be on a different piece of colored cardstock paper.
5. Cut out each figure. As you are cutting out the figures, be sure to label each side
with the number of the figure.
o You should have 16 total pieces cut out when you are done!
o SAVE YOUR ORIGINAL CUT OUT IMAGES ON THE GRAPH PAPER.

Answer the question below:
1. How could I have used figure 1 to get to figure 4? What types of symmetry and
commands would I use? Explain.
