FOLLOW-UP PLAN:

Man/Woman characteristics
a.
Split the group into two smaller groups (depending on numbers)
b.
Provide each group with a t-chart with the word man on one side and
woman on the other
c.
Have each group write words or phrases that describe the qualities or
characteristics of a man under the word man and of a woman under the word
woman (give them 2-3 min)
d.
Bring the groups back together and have them share their lists
e.
Questions of discussion:
i.
Are you happy with the lists you
created? Do you see any changes you would want to make to them?
ii.
Are there terms that do not belong
under the heading theyre under? Are there terms that may fit under both?
iii.
Is it fair to say ALL men or that
ALL women?

What is a stereotype?
a.
Allow students to answer
b.
A stereotype is: an overly simple picture or opinion of a person, group or
thing all old people are forgetful
c.
Write or pull up list of some stereotypical phrases:
i.
All old people are forgetful
ii.
Men are better at math than women
are
iii.
African-American men are the best
basketball players
d.
Give students a minute to consider the phrases
e.
Ask them to share their reactions
i.
Too general to be true
ii.
Its unfair to make such sweeping
statements
f.
Split back up in smaller groups
g.
Provide students with strips of paper - ask the groups to come up with
common stereotypes and each one on a strip of paper give them 3 minutes
h.
Have students alternate presenting stereotypes after they read each
one, challenge ask the students to challenge what was written and ask if what
was written was fair? With each one they refute, have the student tear the
paper in half.

What did they feel about the lesson? What did they learn? Did it ignite
emotions in the students?
