First and Second Grade Math Plans
Focus:
My groups focus will be on fact fluency development. I will teach the students
strategies that will help them speed up their fluency with addition math facts.
Standards:
1.CA.1: Demonstrate fluency with addition within 20. Use strategies such as counting on
and making ten.
I Can Statements:
I can use the strategy counting on from the biggest number with my addition math
facts.
Procedure:
Monday- FIRST GRADE
Fluency Game/Activity: Fishing for Sums (Go Fish with making a 10)
Lesson: We will go through math facts together, practicing holding the biggest number
in our heads and counting on from there. If the students cannot count on in their heads,
I will allow them to use their fingers or tap on the table.
Fact Focus: Adding 2s, 3s, 4s
Materials: Addition math facts, UNO deck
Tuesday- SECOND GRADE
Fluency Game/Activity: Fishing for Sums (Go Fish with making a 10)
Lesson: We will go through math facts together, practicing holding the biggest number
in our heads and counting on from there. If the students cannot count on in their heads,
I will allow them to use their fingers or tap on the table.
Fact Focus: Adding 2s, 3s, 4s
Materials: Addition math facts, UNO deck
Wednesday- FIRST GRADE

One minute fact test
Fluency Game/Activity: Match UNO 10
Lesson: We will go through math facts together, practicing holding the biggest number
in our heads and counting on from there. If the students cannot count on in their heads,
I will allow them to use their fingers or tap on the table.
Focus: Adding 3s, and 4s
Materials: Printed addition fact tests, addition math facts, UNO deck
Friday- FIRST GRADE
One minute fact test
Fluency Game/Activity: Choice
Lesson: We will go through math facts together, practicing holding the biggest number
in our heads and counting on from there. If the students cannot count on in their heads,
I will allow them to use their fingers or tap on the table.
Fact Focus: Adding 3s and 4s
Materials: Printed addition fact tests, addition math facts, UNO deck
Assessment:
I will assess them throughout the week based on their participation. I will document
which students are having a hard, moderate, or easy time using the counting on
strategy. On each groups last day with me for the week, I will give them a 20 question
fact test and see how much they can complete in one minute. This will help with
progress monitoring.
Modifications:
Accommodations from students IEPs:
Small Group instruction when needed
Provide auditory presentations with visual reinforcement when needed
Omit timed copying
Check for understanding
Avoid penalizing poor penmanship, lack of neatness
Give directions in small, distinct steps
Read directions
Shorten Assignments
Modify worksheets
Questions Read
Introduce definitions of new vocabulary and check for understanding
Limit amount of material presented on a single page
Provide practice
