Question 1

The two-tank heating process shown in Figure consists of two

identical, well stirred tanks in series. The holdup volume of each
tank is V = 10 ft3, the density of fluid is = 50 lb/ft3, and the heat
capacity of fluid is cp = 1 Btu/(lb-F). Initially the system is at steady
state with heater Off and the temperature and flow-rate of streams A
and B are Ta = Tb = 60 F and Wa = Wb = 250 lb/min respectively.
It is desired to control the temperature T2 of tank 2. The temperature
of streams A and B are disturbance variable whereas the output of
heater is manipulated variable. The temperature sensor has a static
sensitivity of 1 V/F and time-constant of 10 seconds. The heater has
a static sensitivity of 250 Btu/min per V and a dead time of 2 sec.

Question 2
The output of two-position
controller (Vout2) shown in
Figure turns a light relay
ON when a silicon
photocell output (Vin) drops
to 0.25 V and OFF when
the cell voltage reaches
0.75 V. Assume all the
devices are ideal and the
OP-AMP saturation
(i) Find the values of Vref, R1, and R2.
voltages are 10 V.
(ii) Draw properly labeled (indicating
all transition voltage values and
directions) transfer characteristics plot
between Vout1 vs Vin, and Vout2 vs Vin.

Question 3.
Level measurement in a sump tank
is provided by a transducer scaled
as 0.2 V/m. A pump is to be turned
on by application of 5 V when the
sump level exceeds 2 m. The pump
is to be turned back off when the
sump level drops to 1.5 m. Develop
a two-position controller.
