As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Use PicCollage to show reasons for the journey of the First Fleet
- Recall the reasons for the journey of the First Fleet
- Work cooperatively with a partner to complete the task

Spiderscribe in browser ready for brainstorm.
Have prepared brainstorm of ideas to refer to.
Create, print and laminate copies of QR code
linking to website for students.

A QR code will be given to all students linking


to the video. This will assist students at
educational risk to view the video a second
time.
Class brainstorm will remain on the television
for students to refer to.
Students who finish quickly will be asked to
add extra images and ensure they have
included all aspects of the brainstorm in their
work.
Students with vision impairment will be seated
towards the front of the class, will copy down
brainstorm for future reference and will have
the QR code to refer to if needed to watch on
their iPad.

Motivation and Introduction:

1. Students will make their way to the front of the class to sit on the mat in
order to start the lesson.
Good afternoon everyone. Thank you for having us in your wonderful class
this afternoon. My name is Miss Claessen and this is Miss Clarke. I hope
you remember these teachers from last time (indicates other teachers).
They will be helping us today. Put your hand up if you can tell me something
about the First Fleet.
If students do give correct responses: Excellent, we all know lots about the
First Fleet.
If students dont give answers: Thats okay, today we are going to be
learning about the First Fleet.
We are going to watch a video now about the First Fleet. While you are
listening, pay careful attention to the reasons why England started to send
the convicts to Australia. You will need this information to complete the
activity afterwards. I would like you to make sure you arent touching
anybody else, close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Now open your
eyes and pay attention to the tv.

As we just saw, there were lots of reasons for the journey of the First Fleet.
Put your hand up if you can tell me one of those reasons.

Teachers brainstorm with the students reasons for the journey of the First
Fleet.
3. Teacher explains to students what we are going to be doing today.
Today we are going to be using PicCollage to show the reasons for the
journey of the First Fleet. We have done one already to show you an
example of what yours could look like. (Show prepared example of
PicCollage identifying various elements). You will be working with a partner

to make a collage of pictures that show all of the reasons we have just
brainstormed.
Can everyone please choose a partner and find a space to work with them.
Students choose partners teacher assists if needed.
1.14pm

Our assistant teachers are handing out QR codes. These will take you to
the video link. If you need help, you can watch the video again using this
link. I would like one person in your pair to go and get their iPad please and
then you can start your work. You will have 10 minutes.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

1. To conclude the lesson, teacher calls the students to save their work, put
their iPads away and sit together on the mat.
2. Teacher questions 3 students to see what they have learnt.
3. Teacher makes a statement about the why it is important to know what
caused the journey of the First Fleet.
It is important to know what caused the journey of the First Fleet because it
will improve your understanding when you learn about the Settlement of
Australia and how this impacted the lives of the Aboriginal people.
