Clinical Practice Proposal

Following are the planned clinical practice activities to be undertaken by Dustin Palmer
during the Winter Term 2014 at the University of Michigan-Flint. This clinical practice
will be at Grand Blanc Academy under the direction of Mrs. Patty Wood, Principal of
Grand Blanc Academy, who will serve as the cooperating administrator and provide onsite supervision for the experience.

COMPETENCY 1: Accountability
Related Task 1.1
Ability to analyze and interpret the meaning of various student assessments to boards,
teaching staff, and others.

Specific Task 1.1.3

Ability to use assessment data to identify weaknesses and recommend strategies for
improving student performance

Narrative Description of Specific Task

Analyze the Ed Performance data in math in grades 2-5 and identify the weaknesses
that the struggling students exhibit within the different math domains. Prepare a plan for
the students who are struggling the most to help them with the skills they are lacking.
Present these strategies to the classroom teachers and intervention teachers of these
struggling students so that they can help to make these students more successful.

COMPETENCY 3: COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Related Task 3.8
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Specific Task 3.8.6

Write a detailed description for a school activity.

Narrative Description of Specific Task

Prepare quarterly competitions school-wide to better prepare the students for the
challenge where they will be competing against other schools. The math facts
challenge is an activity that involves grades 1-8 and requires these students to compete
against each other to become the math facts champion. Each grade level has a
different fact requirement. When it was developed last year, there was minimal
preparation for it. The students went to another school and competed but the school
was not preparing the students for it. It was felt that this year that there should be
quarterly challenges and continue to up the ante each quarter to get the students
prepared for the challenge and the process that will be used there.

COMPETENCY 4: CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, SUPERVISION

Related Task: 4.3
Knowledge of a variety of instructional methods and skills.

Specific Task: 4.3.6

Conduct at least one clinical supervision cycle including pre-observation, classroom
observation(s) and post-observation session with teacher.

Narrative Description of a Specific Task:

Participate in two observations and post-observation conferences with a teacher and
prepare an evaluation of the observation. Compare and contrast the written evaluation
with that prepared by the schools principal and discuss similarities and differences
between the two observations. Interview staff members involved in observations about
evaluation process and what they find to be helpful and meaningful and how the staff
members use the information to help refine their teaching.

COMPETENCY 6: ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT

Related Task: 6.1
Ability to develop alternate patterns of space, time, and child-staff groupings.

Specific Task: 6.1.1

Develop a master special schedule for a school.

Specific Task: 6.1.2

Create an alternate special schedule with different specials, one will have 3 specials
and one will have 2 specials, as necessitated by changing enrollment patterns.

Narrative description of Specific Task:

Create at least two different master special schedules for the following 2015-16 school
year. One special schedule will consist of having 3 specials (gym, music, and art)
offered and another will offer 2 specials (gym and music). As final enrollment numbers
and classroom sections are determined, the school will choose which schedule works
best.

COMPETENCY 11: STUDENT PERSONNEL

Related Task: 11.2
Knowledge of principles of discipline, student control, etc.

Specific Task: 11.2.6

Observe the administration of discipline and participate in informal and/or formal due
process hearings.

Narrative Description of Specific Task

Participate in at least 2 formal and/or informal due process hearings when it comes to
discipline among the student body. Analyze how the hearing is held, what questions are
asked, and how consequences are determined by the administrator. Assist in the
process of filing the referral after a consequence has been applied.

COMPETENCY X: JOB SHADOWING/LEADERSHIP

Narrative Description of Specific Task
Spend at least two days shadowing cooperating administrator and assistant principal.
Assist administrator when appropriate. Write a reflective summary of the day citing all
activities that the administrator participated in and provide an analysis of the number,
nature and focus of the activities, and with whom the administrator interacted. Analyze
how much time is devoted to certain administrative jobs and identify several crucial
lessons the day taught about school leadership and administrative practices.

It is understood that this proposal, once approved by the Cooperating Administrator and
University Faculty, represents the agreed plan of work for this clinical experience. Upon
the satisfactory completion of this plan of work a grade will be given and credit for the
course granted.
