Skeletal System
_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Skeletal System. You could build off of the Skeletal System and then
teach students about the Muscular System.
Subject of this lesson: Skeletal System
Grade Level: 3rd grade
NC Essential Standard(s): 3.L.1.1 Compare the different functions of the skeletal and muscular
system
Next Generation Science Standard(s): 3-LS1 From molecules to Organisms: Structures and
Processes
21st Century Skills: I chose Communication and Collaboration. I chose Collaboration because
students will be working with their tables, as well as on a team for the relay. I chose
Communication because communication is important during team work as well as with their
letter they are writing.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: In the table below highlight the one most important language
function for your lesson. Explain why you chose these.

I chose Argue because my students have to argue to the teacher why we need the skeletal system,
backing that up with 3 things they learned during the lesson.

Scientific Vocabulary: Skeletal System

Instructional Objective: Given a power point on the skeletal system, students will write a letter
to the teacher explaining/arguing to her why we need the Skeletal System including at least 3
things they learned from the power point. In order to be considered mastery students must write
at least 4 out 5 sentences, and include at least 2 out of the 3 required things they learned today in
their letter.

Prior Knowledge (student): Students will learn about muscles the day before and how muscles
help provide a structural framework that protects and supports mobility of the human body.
Content Knowledge (teacher):
Support
The main job of the skeleton is to provide support for our body. Without your skeleton your body
would collapse into a heap. Your skeleton is strong but light. Without bones you'd be just a
puddle of skin and guts on the floor.
Protection
Your skeleton also helps protect your internal organs and fragile body tissues. The
brain, eyes, heart, lungs and spinal cord are all protected by your skeleton. Your
cranium (skull) protects your brain and eyes, the ribs protect your heart and lungs and
your vertebrae (spine, backbones) protect your spinal cord.
Movement
Bones provide the structure for muscles to attach so that our bodies are able to move.
Tendons are tough inelastic bands that hold attach muscle to bone.
The PowerPoint for the content knowledge is located on my Weebly.
Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): For ELLs I will provide a
list of facts from the lesson as possibilities for them to include in their letter.
Materials and Technology requirements:
24 copies of Guided Notes (see below)
Power Point I made it
School House Rock video found on youtube I also own a copy of it
Clay and toothpicks- my CT has this enough for at least students to work in partners (12 sets)
Skeleton Relay Pieces- I borrowed them from a former professor- Dr. Barto (had 2 sets)
Students will need a sheet of paper and pencil to write their letter (24 of each)
SmartBoard to present PowerPoint
Total Estimated Time: I have an hour block

Safety considerations: For the outside relay activity I will provide clear guidelines and rules.
For using the toothpicks I will make sure students know they are not toys and that if I see them
playing with them other than to make their skeleton, they will be confiscated.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be
detailed enough for a colleague to follow. If you will be relying on technology (e.g., a YouTube
video), describe your back up plan thoroughly. Imagine your most novice colleague needing to
teach from your plan. Dont just answer the questions. Additionally, I expect you to include
possible questions you could ask for each section. This needs to include higher-order questions.
Engage: I will engage the students by playing the school house rock video on the skeletal
system. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?

Also have students do Skeletal System relay. Students will build a skeleton as a team, using the
skeletal pieces provided.
Ask students based on the relay and the video what do you think we need the skeletal system for?
Do we really need it? What does it look like? What do you think we would look like without the
skeletal system?
Explore: Have students explore putting clay on toothpicks. The toothpicks could represent the
skeletal system or the clay could depending on the students prior knowledge of the skeletal
system. Students will see that the body they create has more structure and stability when the
toothpicks are used but is more of a blob without them. Or students might say that the clay is the
skeletal system and the toothpicks are the organs if they already know that the skeletal system
protects the organs. I will ask students questions such as what do you think would happen if we
didnt have the skeletal system? What do you think we would look like? Would we be able
to move without the skeletal system? What did you use to represent your skeletal system? The
toothpicks or the clay? Why?

Put in a power point for guided notes.

Elaborate: Then have them write a letter to the teacher explaining to why we need the skeletal
system? Encourage them to reference the activity in the letter, and encourage them to reference
their notes.
Put a scenario on the board: Ms. Hosmer doesnt believe that we need a skeletal system, we
need to write her letters explaining to her why we need the skeletal system. - must include 3
things you learned about the skeletal system
Evaluate: I will assess students progress toward the stated objectives by having each student
write a letter to Ms. Hosmer including 3 things they learned about the Skeletal System. This will
be an informal assessment. The formative assessment will be questioning throughout.
Summative will be looking at the students 3 things they learned in their letter.
Formative: I will assess the students learning by checking their notes to be sure they understood
and filled them in correctly.
Summative: I will assess the students learning by reading their letters and grading them based on
the criteria that was posted on the board. Students will write at least 5 sentences and in those 5
sentences tell at least 3 things they learned in todays lesson to receive full credit. Students must
include at least 4 out of 5 sentences, and 2 out 3 things they learned to be considered mastery.
To be complete after the lesson is taught as appropriate
Assessment Results of all objectives/skills: For the students guided notes: 21/24 students
received a 100, 1/24 received a 75, and 2/24 received a 95.
For the students letter: 14/24 students received a 100, 4/24 students received an 88, 4/24 students
received a 75, 1/24 students received a 63, and 1/24 students received a 50.
Reflection on lesson: Reflection on lesson is attached to my Weebly site.
