Human Rights, Fairness, and Development

Visiting the NGOs in Jogja made me realise that we are fortunate

people. In Biblical Studies, we learned about helping the needy and
Yakkum Rehabilitation seeing the disabled children, showed myself that
we are really blessed on what we have today. In Desa Sukunan, we
learned about development of Human Conditions and how a whole
community helps each other in order to be better. In Bethesda Hospital,
we met a HIV positive individual and by visiting there, it makes me realise
that a person deserve the fairness and privacy they deserve on their
everyday lives.
Pusat Rehebilitasi Yakkum is a non-for-profit organisation that aims
to help the disabled and matures them to become somebody that is
beneficial to other people and for the sake of themselves. They aim to
educate the disabled so then they wouldnt have to rely on other people to
help themselves. In Biblical Studies, we learned that Jesus encourages us
to help the needy and also to give empathy to those who are less
fortunate than us. What I learned from that place is that the disabled
person does not have the same job opportunity as of a normal people
physique. I also learned that there is a discrimination and segregation
towards the disabled are practiced throughout companies and something

like that prohibits the disabled to develop on their own. Everybody has the
same rights and everybody has the rights to have a job and social
security. In English and IS, I learned from Article 23 of the UDHR, that
everyone has rights to choose employment and work they desire. While
we see some of the alumni of Yakkum start their own business and is
successful, we also perceive that they choose to do this because they
have a mental pressure and believe that nobody is going to hire them
because they are disabled.
Desa Sukunan is a village that focuses on the development and
creating a better system for their own economy and waste management.
The prospect of managing their waste helps the villagers to create a
business from selling recycled material and using the money to improve
life quality. This relates to the UDHR article 29, which says: everyone has
the right to social development as long as it doesn't hinder the local rules
and belief system. What I learned from Desa Sukunan is that people have
the ability to help each other to solve bigger problems within their
community such as poverty, and no education. Indirectly, getting money
from selling recycled materials helps the villagers to gain money from
selling and to educate their children's to go to school. The organic
compose they make also helps them to grow their own agricultural
products and export them to elsewhere. From Desa Sukunan, I learned
that through being genuine in your ideas and being able to promote that
idea to someone else will benefit to you and your community. Bapak
Iswanto, is a perfect example for being genuine in his ideas and therefore

bringing equality to all the people in Sukunan because he is the person
who started the campaign of waste management.
In CD Bethesda hospital we met a HIV positive individual which told
us about how HIV people are treated and their own human rights. In Civics
class, we learned about those rights which promotes others to not mock or
tease HIV/AIDS positive people or we get a sanction. But hearing from
ODHA themselves make me have compassion for those people who are
very unfortunate. The worst question you can possibly ask to those people
is How did you get it?which presumes that you are intolerant to them
and they have less rights than you do. The ODHA deserves the same
rights as we are because they are still a person and their privacy shall not
be invaded by us because everyone needs a little privacy. In Biblical
Studies class, I learned that Jesus showed his compassion towards the sick
and as a human beings, we need to show empathy and respect to those
who are less fortunate than us. We can show empathy towards them by
not being scared at them and does not mock or tease them because we
still need to remember that they are also people like us, and also to ask
ourselves What about when we are like those people? How do we want to
be treated by others? By visiting this NGO, I have a better understanding
of HIV/Aids itself but also to give compassion towards those who actually
have it.
Visiting the NGOs in Jogjakarta has been eye-opening and
something very reflecting towards myself. Most importantly, from visiting
these NGOs we need to always understand that everyone is born free and

equal, and that no one is exempt from this rights regardless of their skin
color, race, gender, disease, and disabilities. Also something very eyeopening for me is that: I am very blessed with they way I live everyday
and how I eat and I dont have any restrictions in order to do something
because I dont have any physical limitations. I also learned that I always
have to remember that there is a lot of people out there that needs more
attention and more basic needs than me, so therefore I have to be
grateful on what I have today.
