Introduction:

Safety is one of the biggest concerns for North Carolina as well as all the other
states in the USA. In recent years, there has been an increase in school shootings
and North Carolina has seen many natural disasters. The purpose of this project is
to evaluate the distance between NCSU and police stations and fire stations. Also,
to check how many potential emergency centers exist in Wake County in case they
need to be accessed.

Problem Statement:
Universities are one of the most important organizations for North Carolina and
many other states. The better the universities are, the more likely students will feel
safe and have an opportunity to grow. Therefore, it is imperative that even external
fire stations and police departments are close to colleges in order to get to an
emergency situation as soon as possible. For this project, I will look at NC State and
determine if a police station is within one mile, and I will look at types of fire
stations that are within 5 miles. Finally, I will identify shelters across the county that
are not schools, and see how many Wake County has per square miles.

Data Requirements:
I am using NC onemap for my data.
Fire Stations.shp (frsttns)- The different fire stations in NC. (point)
Law Enforcement Locations.shp (lawenf)- the different police stations in NC. (point)
Potential Emergency Centers.shp (pes)- These are the emergency centers in NC that
are used for evacuations. (point)
Colleges and Universities.shp (colluni)- All the colleges and universities in North
Carolina. (point)
North Carolina State and County Boundary Lines - no Shoreline (official) (County
Boundary)- Boundary of counties in NC. (polygon)
All the projections are in NAD_1983_StatePlane_North_Carolina_FIPS_3200
Projection: Lambert_Conformal_Conic
All of the projections are in meters except for the county boundary which is in feet.
Analysis Questions:
1. Does NCSU have a police station within 1 mile that shares the same zip code?
2. How many fire stations within a 5 mile radius of NCSU have fire stations with
ambulance and fire service combined?

3. How many potential emergency centers that are not schools, exist per square
mile of Wake County?

Analysis Plan
1. Select NCSU from colluni shapefile.
Target layer: colluni.shp
Method: Use select tool, and use input features as colluni, and use the expression:
"NAME" = 'NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY AT RALEIGH'
Result: save shapefile as NCSU.shp
2. Create a buffer around NCSU for one mile.
Target layer: NCSU.shp
Method: Use buffer tool, and input NCSU.shp. Use the linear unit as 1 mile and
dissolve all.
Result: save shapefile as NCSU1mile.
3. Create a buffer around NCSU for 5 miles.
Target layer: NCSU.shp
Method: Use buffer tool, and input NCSU.shp. Use the linear unit as 5 miles and
dissolve all.
Result: save shapefile as NCSU5mile.
4. Select the law enforcements that have the zip code of 27695.
Target layer: lawenf.shp
Method: Use the select tool, and input lawenf.shp. Use the expression: "ZIP" =
'27695'.
Result: Save the shapefile as police27695
5. Select the fire stations which have ambulance and fire services combined.
Target layer: frsttns.shp
Method: use the select tool, and input frsttns as the shapefile. Use the
expression: "NAICSDESCR" = 'AMBULANCE AND FIRE SERVICE COMBINED'.
Result: Save the output as ambufire.shp
6. Find all ambulances with fire and ambulance services that are within 5 miles of
NCSU.
Target layer: ambufire.shp, NCSU.shp

Method: Use the intersect tool for both of the shapefiles

Result: save the information as ambufire5.shp
7. Select wake county from the county boundaries shapefile.
Target layer: countyboundary.shp
Method: Use the select tool and input features of countyboundary. Name the
expression: "NAME" = 'WAKE'.
Result: Save the output as wakecounty.shp
8. Select the potential emergency centers that are not schools.
Target layer: Pes.shp
Method: Use the select tool and input Pes shapefile. Use the expression:
"BLDG_TYPE" <> 'SCHOOL'
Result: save result as pesnotschool.shp
9. Find how many Pes which are not schools exist within Wake County.
Target layer: pesnotschool.shp and wakecounty.shp
Method: Use the intersect tool and intersect both of the shapefiles.
Result: save the output as peswake.shp

Expected Outcomes:
1. Does NCSU have a police station within 1 mile that shares the same zip code?
When we look at how many police stations that share the same zip code, we only
have one police station that shows up. When we look at the one mile buffer, we find
that the police station is outside of the one mile buffer. So the answer is that we do
not have a police station with the same zip code that is within one mile.
2. How many fire stations within a 5 mile radius of NCSU have fire stations with
ambulance and fire service combined?
First we have to identify the number of fire stations that have ambulance and fire
services combined. So we take the ambufire.shp file and intersect it within the 5
mile buffer around NCSU. We take a look at the ambufire5.shp. This shows a total
of 12 fire stations within a 5 mile radius of NCSU that have ambulance and fire
services combined.
3. How many potential emergency centers that are not schools, exist per square
mile of Wake County?
For this, we first want to look at how many potential emergency centers that are
not schools. So we look at the pesnotschool.shp and intersect it with the

wakecounty shapefile. We look at the result of pewake.shp which gives us the result
of 4.
We can then look at the square miles of Wake County in the attribute table and find
out the value equals 857.10. We then can say that we have 4 pes emergency
centers that are not schools within 857.10 square miles. Or that we have 1 pes
emergency center that is not a school within 214.27 square miles.
For the conclusion, we see that NCSU has a police station that is just outside of one
mile. This is an indication that safety is ok, but it could be improved if the police
station is within one mile. We also find that we have 12 fire stations that have
ambulance and fire services within 5 miles of NCSU. This is very good safety wise in
case there is an emergency. Finally, we have 4 pes emergency centers that are not
schools in all of Wake County. Since it is 1 in 214.27, it is an issue that may need to
be addressed since schools are not always the best emergency centers for students
and residents.
