Lesson Objectives
When given the option of which shape they want, students will respond
with I want the _________, please, at least 3 out of 4 times in order to
be considered proficient.
Evaluation of Learning Objectives
When asked what shape cookie cutter they would like to have,
students will reply with I want __________ (fill in a shape), please. I will
ask each of them four times. In order to be considered proficient, a
student must correctly respond at least 3 out of 4 times. Depending on
each students accommodation, this response may look different.
Engagement
The teacher will start by saying hello to each student and having them
respond by saying hello back. Hello L., (she will respond with her

Speaking Device) Hello L.A., Hello S., Hello K. When each student has
said good morning/hello back, the teacher will transition into talking
about shapes. Good morning friends! We have a fun day planned. We
get to play with playdough today and are going to talk about shapes!
Do you guys have a favorite shape? My favorite shape is a circle.
Today, we are going to make our own shapes out of our playdough!

Teaching
The teacher will introduce the lesson and explain how the
students will each ask for the color playdough they would like
as well as the shape that they want to make. Today, we are
going to be using our words to ask for the color playdough we
would like. When it is your turn, you are going to tell me what
color you would like. Who can remind me how you would ask
for that color? Yes, you say I want ______, please. After you
have your playdough, you are going to use a cookie cutter to
create a shape. You must tell me which shape you would like
by saying, I want the _________, please. The teacher will
demonstrate using the playdough as well as a cookie cutter
shape. Once you have your playdough flattened and have a
cookie cutter, you may make a shape. You may point to the
shape you would like, but I would like for you to try to your
best to also say it as clearly as you can. The teacher will go
around starting with one student and take turns with each. Hi
K., what color playdough would you like? Great words! Now
what shape cookie cutter would you like? Oh the circle, I like
how you clearly you asked! You can flatten it out and make
your shape now. The teacher will continue to practice with the
students until all of the students have had at least four turns.
The teacher will keep a record how many times the student
correctly responded to the question.

II.

Opportunity for Practice

The teacher will let the students make a shape on their own
without using the cookie cutter. Ok boys and girls, great job
using the cookie cutter to mold the playdough! Now, you can
try on your own without the cutter. The teacher will let them
make a shape and then she will ask them what shape they
made. Oh wow, that is such a pretty shape, what shape is

that? She will take note on their responses to record how

accurately they respond and say the name of the shape.
III.

Assessment
The teacher will make a note of how many times the student
responded correctly to the question. In order to meet the
standard and learning objective, the student must have
gotten at least 3 out of 4 responses correct.

IV.

Closure
The teacher will praise the students on how hard they worked
and encourage them to continue using the great sentences
and speaking that they did today. Wow! You guys did happy
work! I am so proud of how hard you worked and how you
worked on clearly speaking and articulating your words. You
will have to find the shapes that you made today in the halls
and your classrooms. Great job today girls and boys! I am
very proud of you.

Plans for Individual Learners and Differentiation Strategies

Extensions:
Students will put their saying in a question and say, Can I please
have _________, please?
The students must choose the correct cookie cutter after they
say the one they would like.
Accommodations and Modifications:
K. will sit at her own table, where her wheelchair is accessible.
When asking her a question, I will go to that table.
L. will use her Speaking Device to choose her color and be
involved in the lesson.
There will be two assistants in the room to also help the students
with focusing and keeping on track during the lesson.

Data Analysis
The students did very well in this lesson. L.s speaking device was not
working, so I gave her visuals to choose from. Although she could not
use her communication, she was able to point and choose which shape
she wanted, which we considered a success. L.A. did very well. He was
able to say please correctly at the end of each request. S. correctly
asked for each shape she wanted each time she had a turn. K. said the
shape she wanted each time, and I had to prompt her to put the
request in a complete sentence. Overall, the students did really well
and each of them met the objective and IEP goal.

Reflection
I really enjoyed teaching this lesson. It was my second time to teach
Language Group, so I felt a little more comfortable. I was able to hold
my expectations high and have them request for their shape correctly. I
used my feedback from the last lesson, and praised and encourage for
specific things instead of simply a Good job! If I taught this lesson
again, I would have more shape option cookie cutters. I would also
have more playdough because sometimes there wasnt enough dough
for how big the cookie cutters were. Ms. Knight observed me, and it
was really neat to hear her feedback. She was very encouraging and
thought the lesson went very well. She thanked me for taking the time

to prepare for this lesson and making it a priority. Her feedback meant
a lot to me because those students have become dear to me and I love
being able to impact their learning, even if only with a few lessons.
