Design Principle Examples

In Graphic & Web Design

Dominance
The size of the hand is much larger than
the other elements in the logo; the text and
the elephant.
There is also a lot of empty space
surrounding the smaller items, drawing our
eyes to the more dominant object.
The contrasting colours; black and white,
further emphasise the dominance of the
large black hand.

Emphasis (contrast)
The main element producing contrast in this
example is the use of colour. The dark colour of
the child on the swing contrasts against the light
background. This draws the viewers attention to
the focal point of the photo, which in this case is
the child.

(Another example) The red apple is emphasised. The contrasting red colour
in a sea of green apples draws the viewers eye to the red apple.

colour emphasis

Emphasis (proportion)
One big picture grabs the
attention before the rest of the
pages images or text.

Unity (proximity)

Use of the same shape in

repetition provides a sense of
unity

Unity (repetition)

Use of the repetitive

column design,
shadowing elements and
space gives the design a
coherent structure which
groups the objects
creating an appearance of
unity.

PATTERN
Pattern is achieved through the repetition or alternation of elements
such as lines, shapes or colours. In this case there are cleverly
arranged orange and cream coloured pegasus.
This particular piece is by M. C. Escher. Look him up, hes great and
probably produced a bunch of works youre already familiar with
without realising it.

Balance (Symmetrical)
They have used shapes and depth of field to create a to create
balance

Balance (Asymmetrical)
This Poster achieves Asymmetrical Balance from the
use of dominant colouring of the text along with the
size of the object. By having both of these things in
play the eye is split between the two sides.

Movement
Movement principle is
achieved in this poster
through the use of
shape, line, colour,
repetition, proportion
and symmetry.
