1. Lesson Name/Title: Lets Come Together for Morning Meeting
2. SOLs/Foundation Blocks
1.3
Oral Language
The student will adapt or change
oral language to fit the situation.
a) Initiate conversation with
peers and adults.
b) Follow rules for
conversation using
appropriate voice level in
small-group setting
c) Follow simple two-step
oral directions.

3. Objective(s)
The student will be able to follow
the rule of coming to the carpet
by the end of the 2 minuet song.

4. Assessment of Objective(s)
If all students are at the carpet by the
end of the song, the teacher will know
that the objective was met. If there is a
student or students still at the desks,
the teacher will know that the objective
was not met.

The students will initiate

conversation with their peers or
sing along with the cd while the
song is playing.

If students are having conversations

with their peers or are observed singing
to the CD while the CD is playing the
objective will be met.

The student will be able to follow

the direction that voices must be
silent when the song ends.
The students will be silent

If the students voices are not heard

when the song ends the students are
meeting the desired objective

The Students will follow the

rules of arriving at morning
meeting using the appropriate
quiet indoor voice.

If the students use indoor voices while

transitioning from morning work to
morning meeting and are not heard
yelling (using an outside voice) the
students will meet the objective.

5. Materials
The only materials you need for this lesson is the CD with the song the more we get together by Dr. Jean and
a CD player or computer to play the music through.
6. Optimal Students/Seating Arrangement for the Lesson
For optimal seating for this activity is for the children to be in an oval shape while sitting on the carpet in front of
the smart board. All students must be included in this oval, even the adults. Teacher may or may not choose to
sit in rocker.
7. Lesson Sequence

Introduction (3 minutes)
The introduction describes the way you will start the lesson. How will you explain its purpose to the
children? You should plan a stimulating, motivating introduction to help insure students attention to the
lesson. How are you conceptually connecting the lesson to other lessons?
What you will do/say
Ok class please come to carpet that is in front of the
smart board I would like to thank you all for listening
so well You guys are listening better than any class I
have ever had before Since we will be having
morning meeting every morning it is important that we
all know what the expectation are

What the student(s) do/say

Children are likely to smile and give the teacher eye

contact.

Procedures (7 minutes)
Procedures must match objectives. Be sure to include enough activities per objective to increase the
likelihood that students will learn the material.
What you will do/say
What the student(s) do/say
Students are sitting on the carpet in an oval shape at
this point in the lesson. The teacher is sitting at the
rocker and is giving the children eye contact. All
students are being respectful and are giving the
teacher their attention. Thank you boys are girls for
coming to the carpet when I asked you to Before we
begin talking about classroom/school expectations I
want to go over my expectations for morning meeting
Every morning meeting you will know to come to the
carpet when you hear a song
At this time the teacher needs to get up and go over
the computer or CD player and begin the song. The
snog is preview for the class through the first verse
and then is turned off. (While the song plays the
teacher should sing out loud for all the students to
hear the excitement in her voice about this song!

As the song is playing some students might say I

know this song, or I have never heard of this song
before.

We are going to practice, now that you know which

song I am going to play I want to teach you how we
will come to the carpet each morning When you hear
this song I want you to start to put away your morning
work at your desk, then push in your chair and come
together at the front of the room while the song is
playing you are allowed to chat with a friend, but when
the song ends you voices need to be off Can
someone tell me what I expect you to do?
Student picks a child who has their hands raised.

Excellent thank you for reminding the class the

morning meeting expectations Do you think you guys
are ready to practice?
Everyone needs to practice so that we all know what
to do each morning Please return back to your desk
and pretend to do your morning work, remember you
can chat with your friends quietly using an inside
voice (The teacher is reminding the students of her
expectations and she is giving them practice to
complete the objective of chatting while the song is on,
following rules, and using an inside voice.
The teacher at this time should get up and turn the
song on and push play.

when the song begins you have to start getting

ready to come to the carpet and when it ends we
cant talk
Another student is likely to throw extra information in
to please the teacher. Some students might not even
answer the teacher. This all depends on the students
who you have in your classroom
A student is likely to ask why we have to. This is seen
to the teacher as whining. The teacher will remind the
student whining is not allowed. The students will
likely say yes for students who reply No

The music should play for 2 minutes and the teacher

should stand back and observe to see if her students
are doing what she asked them to do.

The students should follow the direction and return to

their seats (if the students do return to their seats and
begin to chat quietly they are meeting the objective of
following 2 step directions and initiation of
conversation with peers.

The song ends!

The students are all sitting back into an oval formation
and the students are all silent. If this does occur the
objective of being silent when the music turns off the
objective would be met. If some students are still
chatting than the objective would not be reached. If the
teacher heard chatting or singing during the song the
objective of imitation of conversation would be met. If
the noise level was at a good level that objective would
also be met.

SILENCE

Excellent job boys and girls I am so impressed with

your ability to follow directions the first time We are
going to have a fantastic year I can tell Please give
yourself a round of applause ( the teacher
demonstrates the clapping in a circular motion) the
children imitate.

Closure (2 minutes)
What you will do/say
What the student(s) do/say
Now that we have practiced coming together at the carpet for
morning meeting can anyone tell me what is the signal that let
you know it is time to come to the carpet?
Several students will raise their hands
The teacher will call on one student who has done a great job
listing insert students name what is the signal to come to the
carpet
the song comes on
Thats right good job, you were listening! Did everyone here
insert childs name he said that when the song comes on you
know it is time to start getting ready to come to the carpet.
Can you talk while the song is playing?
Insert childs name said we cant talk does anyone have a
different answer?

Thats right you are allowed to chat quietly while the song is
playing (by saying this you are letting the student know they are
allowed to initiate conversation with peers)
Last question, what happens when the song end?
The teacher picks on someone with their hand raised and does
not pick students who call out the answer without raising their
hands

No!

(Student with hand raised and is called

on) yes we are allowed to chat with our
friends or sing while the song is playing)

We have to be quiet
You all are so smart, I am so glad that you guys played

attention and know the expectations of morning meeting Now it

is time to line up at the door so that we can go on our cafeteria
tour
Children line up at the correct location in the room and are
waiting quietly before heading into the hallway.
8. Modifications for children at different learning levels
The little boy in our class has severe autism and has a full time aid. His aid allows him to sit in her lap. For this
student a lot of overhand correction is used. The student also has a PECS books that he brings with him
wherever he goes. During this morning meeting he participated in getting up and coming back, however no
special modification was made directly for him. During this time I am not sure that the teacher really engaged
with him directly as she did the other students.
9. Reflections
(To be completed after the lesson plan is implemented.) Discuss what you learned from teaching the lesson.
What went well? What unexpected things happened, and how did you handle them? Did the students get out
of the lesson what you wanted, and did they enjoy it? What would you do differently the next time you teach
the lesson?
While observing the first day of school morning meeting I learned that it is very important to give students clear
and direct instructions even for task that seem simple. I think that overall the morning meeting went very well.
The students listened the entire time and were very respectful when another person was talking. The students
also did a fantastic job following the directions. The only unexpected thing that happed was a little boy in our
class who has severe autism pulled the teachers name badge because it was on a retractable string. The
teacher handled it well; basically you would never have known it happened. I believe the students did learn a
lot during the meeting. They were given clear rules and expectations. I am not sure how much fun they had
sitting down on the carpet mostly listening. I think at the beginning of the morning meeting I would have
incorporated more movement to get the students excited and to make learning more enjoyable. At times I felt
that the students were given too many rules at one time, perhaps I would have limited how many things I went
over in one setting.
