Save The Birds

Environmental Action Plan by:

Significance of our Project

We are mounting bird houses and
bird feeders to help and save the
population of endangered birds native
to Maryland. The two main birds we
plan to focus on and attract to the new
habitat are the Blue Jay and the Yellow
Throated Warbler.

Significance of Birds
Birds are important to the
ecosystem for many reasons. For
example, birds keep our ecosystem in
balance by pollinating plants,
dispersing seeds, scavenging
carcasses, and releasing nutrients
back into soil. Also our project of
planting trees in science class could
also benefit from bird actions. The
more birds that are scattering the

Background of Project
The Blue Jay population has only
grown 4 percent since 2000 even with
all the time to save them. Yellow
Throated Warblers have had a 30
percent decrease in their population
since 2000. Also we used our
community to help raise money to
fund the birdhouses and feeders so we
could create the safest habitat possible
for these birds.

Research
We researched the size ranges of
the Blue Jays and the Yellow Throated
Warbler. We found that Blue Jays range
from 9.8 inches to 11.8 inches tall, 2.5
to 3.5 ounces, and its wingspan is 13.4
to 16.9 inches. The Yellow Throated
Warbler is 5.1-5.5 inches tall, 0.3 to 0.4
ounces, ands its wingspan is 8.3
inches.

Additional Research
To make the safest habitat possible we had
to find the birds favored foods to eat. The Blue
Jay often eats black oil sunflower seeds,
acorns, and peanuts. The Yellow Throated
Warbler tends to eat insects hence its name
insectivorous. Also the Blue Jay is not
territorial, but the Yellow Throated Warbler is.
The Blue Jay prefer to live 10 to 12 feet off the
ground where as the Yellow Throated Warbler
nest 15 to 20 feet above ground.

Birdhouse Building: Yellow Throated

Warbler
The Yellow Throated Warbler 5.1 to
5.5 inches tall. To make a comfortable
home for the bird we must make the
bottom 8-9 inches, both sides 8 inches
tall, and the roof 8-9 inches. The birds
wingspan is 8 inches so we figured
that is how big the space needs to be,
including space for reproduction.

Birdhouse Building: Blue Jay

The Blue Jay is 9.8 inches to 11.8 inches
tall. To make the home suitable for the bird,
we are adding a ledge to the birdhouse so
they have a perch to feed on. In order for
the home to be comfortable and safe we
need to make houses that are open on one
side. The back of the bird house needs to be
7 inches tall, the bottom section is 8
inches and half of it will be open for a ledge,
and the top will need to be 6 inches long.
