Running Head: LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Leadership Development Plan

Personal Statement

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

I believe that everyone should be treated equally and have an opportunity to live the life
they want to live. By treating everyone equally an as a human being I hope to gain trust and
respect from everyone I encounter. Living by this motto and incorporating it into every aspect of
my life, I will become a better occupational therapist (OT) and overall better person.
Mission and/or Vision Statement
I am at my best when people are depending on me and I will try to prevent times when I
am distracted. I will enjoy my work by seeking employment where I can come up with creative
ways to solve problems. I will find enjoyment in my personal life through outdoor activities and
spending time with family and friends. I will find opportunities to use my natural talents and
gifts such as listening to others, humor, and helping others. I can do anything I set my mind to
and I will make sure that people I encounter have the opportunity to better themselves physically
and mentally. My life's journey is to make the world a better place and it will be for all. The
purpose behind this is because I believe everyone deserves equal opportunities and a chance to
have the highest quality of life possible. The results will be positive, because as long as I am able
to inspire one person and make the world a little bit better, it will be successful. I will be a person
who is well respected, well educated, outgoing, and has a great sense of humor. My most
important future contribution to others will be being as nice, considerate, and helpful as possible.
I will stop procrastinating and start working on being more open minded, knowing there is a time
and place for everything and trying to obtain as much relevant information as possible before
making any assumptions. I will strive to incorporate the attributes friendship, love, and
intelligence into every aspect of my life. I will constantly renew myself by focusing on
maintaining good health, satisfaction with my belief in a higher power, being mentally sharp and
well-educated, and maintaining a good social support system built up of family and friends.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

3
Strengths

My greatest strengths would have to be determination, my sense of humor, and being a

team player. I think that these are three important traits to possess and they will enhance my
career as an occupational therapist. Being determined will come in handy when presented with a
difficult situation, because I know I will work hard to find an appropriate solution. Having a
sense of humor is useful for everyone by getting them to smile. Smiling will then increase the
clients self-efficacy, which will then progress to establishing a great rapport. Knowing that
there is a specific time and place to use my sense of humor is also a strength and one I will want
to keep in mind often. Being a team player will come in handy on a daily basis, when interacting
with the interdisciplinary team. By knowing how to work successfully as a unit, the client will
receive the highest level of care possible.

Growth Needs
One area of growth I would benefit from would be to ask more questions when presented
with uncertainty. Numerous times during my schooling I have been confused but was too
nervous to ask for clarification, because I was scared my question would be viewed as stupid.
Luckily, my professors at Touro University Nevada have repeatedly told me, and the class, that
there is no such thing as a stupid question and that if I am confused about something, chances
are, others in the class are confused too. This has really helped me to become more open to
asking questions. Another area in need of improvement is my confidence level with patients.
My fieldwork experience showed me that I am knowledgeable, but I do not portray it well with
clients and often come off as uncertain. This is something I would like to improve on to help the
clients feel safer with me and more comfortable. I think this area will get better with more
exposure and experience as an occupational therapist.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Leadership Model and/or Style Selected:

Of all of the leadership styles I would say that I align more closely to being a situational
leader. The reason I most closely relate to this style is because I do not think that there is one
universal leadership style that is appropriate for all situations. I think some situations require
finesse while other situations require the leader to be firm, it just all depends on the setting and
the relationship between the leader(s) and the followers. I also feel this is the best leadership
style because it is always changing to benefit those involved so they have the highest level of
success. I will strive to maintain this leadership style throughout my life.
