Reflection
Standard 3 revolves around the efficiency in which a school is run. From my own personal
experience school morale goes up dramatically when the school is run in an efficient and
orderly manner. Protocols and policies have to be in place for schools to operate in different
situations. One of the constants in working in a school is the realization that no two days are
quite the same and it is critically important that a school leader knows how to operate when
put in difficult situations.
My first artifact is a reflection regarding a lockdown that occurred during the fall of 2013. At
the end of a school day our school was put in lock down because of a threat that occurred at
a nearby middle school. We had to shuffle students into our classrooms and maintain a safe
and orderly environment until we were given the all clear. Throughout the process our
administration was in constant contact with parents and staff to keep everyone informed of
the situation. The day after the lockdown a staff meeting was held to get staff feedback to
our buildings policies and protocols which I felt gave each staff member a valued voice in the
development of school policy.
My second artifact is a copy of our school athletic eligibility policy. We adopted this new
policy this school year. There were several avenues to communicate this new policy with
students and families. I personally attended the fall sports parent meeting as well as a
conversation with the principal meeting in the fall of 2014 where the policy was introduced to
families by our Activities Director and Principal. During the conversation with the principal
meeting I answered parents questions and gave my feedback from both a teacher and a
coachs perspective.
My final artifact revolves around a textbook adoption that completed this past spring. This
year we implemented a new AP Physics course that I currently teach. As part of district
protocol we completed an adoption process that required the review of several different
textbooks and resources, student feedback of the textbooks, and a meeting with the

publisher representative. The process demonstrated that in choosing an educational

resource it was important to develop a consensus from a variety of decision makers to select
a textbook that best meets the needs of our students.
