Academy of Our Lady Mount Carmel

From the Web to the Classroom: Integrating Web 2.0 Skills for
the 21st Century
Professional Development Plan for School Year 2015 -2016

Overview:
This past September our schools computer lab was revamped with 30
new MacBooks. The lab also houses over 45 iPads that can be used
throughout the school. Unfortunately, many of our teachers have not
chosen to utilize the technology available at OLMC. This professional
development is intended to develop skills and abilities within the
teaching staff to facilitate their performance within the classroom. This
in turn will contribute to enhancing student performance, with a focus
on 21st century skills.
Learners:
All teaching faculty at OLMC. The skill level of these teachers varies.
Some have experience with iPads and MacBooks, while others have
never used either. Many teachers in the school do not utilize any Web
tools that could be easily and quickly integrated into their curriculum.
Trainers: Technology Integrator, School Administrator, Director of
Technology for the Archdiocese of Newark, and Bergen County
Educational Technology Trainers.
Location:
All PD workshops will take place at the Academy of Our Lady Mount
Carmel. Workshops will be held in the computer lab, and classrooms
with working projectors.
Training Days:
PD is going to be two full days from 9 to 3 at the beginning of the year.
This will be mandatory for all teachers to attend.
There will be informal workshops once a month for teachers to come to
the computer lab and meet with the technology integrator, who will
facilitate and guide them in working on and clarifying any issues with
skills they have already learned, or to get more advanced training.

SMART Goals: (Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic,
and Timely)

Teachers will better be able to integrate technology and web 2.0

skills at the end of the school year by attending workshops,
collaborating with colleagues, and taking risks in their method of
instruction.

The administration and technology integrator will work to help

teachers build comfort with these strategies by demonstrating
programs, working with small groups and providing one-on-one
training with teachers throughout the school year.

Teachers will then be required to use the newly learned skills in a

lesson that will be observed by the administration and
technology integrator three times per year.

At the end of the school year, the faculty will be asked in what
ways they will look to integrate more web 2.0 skills in their
regular classroom instruction moving forward.

Obstacles:

Hardware issues such as network down or too slow.

Teacher motivation to want to learn new technology skills.

Teachers think technology makes the student dependent on an

external device that thinks for them. Technology changes the
way students process, retain and recall information.

Many teachers think they are being given more information to

bring home with them with little if any practical benefits. It
becomes just another thing to do

Time management and practical implementation of new

strategies.

Assessment:
In order to ensure the success of the professional development, both
formative and summative assessments will need to be conducted.
Benchmarks will be created to monitor, assess, and evaluate progress
throughout the year, in the form of one tech lesson presented 6
times within the school year. The first lesson can be given in
collaboration with the technology integrator, and the classroom
teacher on their own will conduct the ensuing benchmark lessons. Both
the administration and the tech integrator will observe these lessons
and meet with the teacher in order to provide feedback and make any
amendments to the plan. Any needed revisions will be done in a well
thought out manner, and quickly and easily implemented.
