Interview and Experiential Learning Opportunities

In our interview, Suz and I discussed various topics such as our intended majors, high
school and college activities, summer and work experience, career goals, college goals, and any
general interests or hobbies. I found that Suz is interested in Visual Communications in Graphic
Design. She is very logical and creative, and a very strong leader. She has a strong background in
volunteering and working with kids, while also dedicating lots of time to various areas in visual
and performing arts. In the future, she would like to travel more while continuing to volunteer,
and hopefully end up in a career focused on helping people. She would love to travel to Israel
one day.
In doing research on possible experiential learning opportunities for Suz, I focused on
study abroad options since it was something we are both eager about pursuing. Specifically, I
looked for programs focused around a passion we had discussed in our interview. I found two
options which might be of interest to her:
http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/south-africa/cape-town/service-learning/#1rightForYou
http://courses.washington.edu/semil/wordpress/
The first is a study abroad trip to Cape Town, South Africa, for students who have
experience with community service and/or volunteerism and who are highly motivated to engage
in community service while taking part in a rigorous academic program. As previously stated,
Suz is passionate about volunteering and travel while also being a strong and hardworking leader
with initiative. Because of these overlaps, I feel she may be interested in considering this as an
option.
The second is a UW Exploration Seminar to Israel, during which she would have firsthand learning experiences and field tours of the country. In our conversation, Suz and I
expressed a similar interest in visiting Israel, for it has a religious significance to both of us. This
would be a great way for her to pair a trip to Israel with learning all about the social and political
structure and the countrys leaders.
My primary resource in finding these options for Suz was the following site:
http://studyabroad.washington.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.SimpleSearch
This site is amazing. If you have no idea what kind of program you are looking for, you can click
List All and view all the program options. If you have a more specific idea, you can select
specifications anywhere from location to program type to what field you are interested in. I
highly recommend it to anyone looking to participate in study abroad!

From: Suzanne Boretz
In our interview session, you and I discovered that we both love kids. Additionally, we are both
interested in traveling (even though you are much more worldly than I am!), so I researched a

few areas including at least one of these two shared aspects to find the best experiential
learning opportunities for you!
I came across a non-government organization, called Global Volunteers, that has opportunities
for students to volunteer abroad with young children. They have programs on every continent,
and are committed to waging peace through person-to-person interactions. This also kind of
ties into one of your larger goals (to get involved with a non-government organization), as well
as your major in a sociology or psychology field. This could be used for any of the last three
Experiential Learning categories because all of the projects require leadership, service, and
international engagement. Explore the site: http://www.globalvolunteers.org/students/. Happy
traveling!
I think that you would also be interested in more local projects involving children. The Seattle
childrens hospital might be a good place for you to determine if your interest in the medical side
of psychology is something you would want to pursue academically because many of the
interaction opportunities are with developmentally challenged children. This opportunity could be
really rewarding, and it has a wide range in actual volunteer activities, including swimming class
aides, patient-sibling games, and actual patient interaction. It seems like a big commitment, but
also
definitely
worth
looking
up:
http://www.seattlechildrens.org/ways-tohelp/volunteer/opportunities/. Any of these positions could be applied in the service or
leadership experiential requirements.
I hope these are helpful for you! Good luck with whatever projects you pursue.
