Curriculum expectations: A1.1, A3.1, B1.2, 1.4
Topics: Movement Competence, Active Living

Grade 2 | Jump and Land

Learning Goals

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

demonstrate the ability to jump and land safely and in control when experimenting with a variety of
take-offs (from one foot or from two feet) and landings
actively and safely participate in gymnastics activities while applying relationship and social skills.

Facility

Gymnasium

Safety Requirements

Refer to the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines - Elementary Curricular Module, Movement
Activities for Primary Grades activity page.

Equipment List

Warm-Up

Students will gradually increase their heart rate by participating in the following activity.
Review safety criteria for travelling in personal and shared space.

Lily Pad

Students each pick up a hula hoop and find a space to place it down quietly.
Students move through the activity area around the hoops.
On the teachers signal, students jump and land inside the nearest hoop.
Repeat. Students move in a variety of ways around the hoops (e.g., walking, jogging, skipping, galloping).

Minds On

Share and clarify the lesson Learning Goals in student-friendly language.

Explain the important safety procedures to follow during gymnastics and make sure the students
understand safety considerations before beginning the activities.
Brainstorm a list of safety rules that should be followed when jumping and landing:

Find own personal space and balance within that space.

Keep hands to yourself.
Stay in control.

Introduce the Success Criteria for Take-Offs and Landings.

Briefly review Success Criteria for Active Participation. (See Teacher Resource 1: Anecdotal Recording
Chart.)

Take-Offs

Use arms for balance and keep weight forward.

Practise swinging arms forward and backward while stationary.
Practise leaning with weight forward and in control.
Bend knees.

(Note: include two foot take off and one foot take off)

Action

Jumping and Landing

Students each move to their own hoop and find different ways to jump and land inside it.
Instruct students to

Students start inside their hoops and practise jumping and landing outside their hoops in different ways.
Examples:

land lightly on the balls of their feet

bend at the knees, ankles and hips to absorb the force of the landings
use their arms to help balance on the landing.

two feet to two feet

one foot to two feet
two feet to one foot
one foot to opposite foot (a leap)
one foot to same foot (a hop).

Students practise jumping, hopping or leaping over their own hoops.

Students should attempt to land lightly facing the direction from which they came

Cool-Down

Students gradually decrease their heart rate to a resting rate by participating in the activity below.
Students should also stretch the body parts that have been active throughout the lesson. See
Appendix for stretches.

Students sit inside their own hoops and isolate different body parts to tense and then relax (e.g., hand,
legs, feet).
Then they stand, holding their hoops over their heads, and stretch their bodies into tall shapes.

Consolidation

Hoop Hopping
Divide the class into groups of 4 5. Students take six hoops per group and arrange them in any
pattern on the floor (for an example, see Fig. 2). In a follow-the-leader formation, students jump
through their groups hoop pattern. Encourage students to visit with the other groups and attempt to
jump through their hoop patterns.
Students observe one anothers take-offs and landings, looking for control, lightness on landing and
good balance.

take-offs (from one foot and two feet), landings and cooperation using Teacher Resource 1: Anecdotal
Recording Chart

Ideas for Extension

Repeat the Hoop Hopping activity using hopping and leaping movements through the hoop patterns.
