Tay v Lead the way .... — as o> Two roads diverged in a wood, and | — — I took the one less traveled by, . A And that has made all the difference. ® The famous lines of Robert Frost stand for the people who have become the torch bearers by taking difficult roads to show way to others. Mananeeya Eknathji was one who opted to travel through arduous terrains and made a great difference not only in his life but also in the life of millions. Setting up of a befitting memorial of Swami Vivekananda, founding a unique organization to uphold India’s unique ideals “Tyaga’ and ‘Seva’, setting up of a chain of schools in the North — Eastern corner of the country are some of the valuable contributions of Mananeeya Eknathji dedicated this e While celebrating the 100 Birth Anniversary of him we have ion of Arohi to him with a title ‘Chosen Path’ The path chosen by him has beckoned many more to realize the inner potentials of them and thus using it for establishing dharma, an ideal social order. This edition of Arohi has encapsulated the creative expressions of students and Teachers. It also contains the written text of the speech of Hon'ble Prime Minister in the National Level inaugural ceremony of Mananeeya Eknathji Janma Shati Parva. The heart touching expressions of some of the teachers give us a glimpse of the great work and motivation of the pioneers who walked on the path shown by Eknathji. As usual it has the Annual Report of the last academic year and achievements of students. Thus it acts as a reflecting everything of VKVs in the beautiful Himalayan state of our country. It is said “A small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world”. There are two primary choices in life: To accept conditions as they exist, or to take up the responsibility to change them. The creative men always opt for the second. We wish that education should empower our students to bring out the hidden talent and also to groom them as the creative men who are committed to work for the welfare of the people. Let our students learn, achieve and epitomize the spirit of Eknathji. Wish you a happy reading .. t P. M. Unnikrishnan (Education Officer) EDITOR Sri Unnikrishnan P. Thisisa very providential occasion to be present on the Centenary Celebration of the Mahapurush whom we glanced as a source of inspiration in our childhood: with whom in my early age! could get ‘an opportunity to work; whose thoughts always taught us something new. You can imagine the magnitude of pride of a person, who spent a significant time under his guidance, when he is geting an opportunity to attend and pay homage and express the feeling of ‘Sardha’ on the inauguration of the Centenary Celebration of such a Mahapurush. ‘Many people present here might have natural relationship with Eknathj. | also had very intimate relationship with Eknathl always ‘observed that he was so much concerned about perfection thatthe persons working with him fourd it sometime very dificult to elevate ‘onesefto that level of perfection. | heard about al the discussions in respect to the statue of Swami Vivekananda at the time of the construction of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. He discussed even the minute details with the architect and the designer like the direction of the glance of the eyes of Swami Vivekananda and the nature of reflection inthe eyes etc. During the construction of the Rock Memorial he was concerned about the selection of such rock pieces which would beable to withstand the ceaseless marine wind ‘After the completion of the construction, Eknathji contemplated on various possibilities of applying modern technology and chemicals so that the monument lasts forever though those were not his subjects, ‘of specialization, He was neither an engineer nor an architect but it had been his distinguishing feature to have the feeling that whatever ‘wedo let us doit with a sense of permanency; whatever we dolet us do it in consideration of the future and whatever has been done should be simple and benefial. He always planned any Yojana’ taking all these into account. He was very much particular that ‘whatever is done should be done withthe active participation of the people. This wasthe fst attempt in which there were such extensive arrangements forthe involvement ofthe people. Ifyou ask any person who has crossed the age of forty in India, then maximum will tell, ‘Yes! | aso contributed one rupee for the construction of the Rock Memorial If these people visit the Rock ‘Memorial, then there is that predominant feeling ‘Yes! My Participation also there in this monument: Evoking such feelings in ‘every nook and corner of Hindustan that we may belong to any part of the country or the World and the Rock Memorial may be in the 50 — AROHT | 2013-14 midst of the sea, but my contribution is also there, | am also ‘connected withthis- this was a Sanskar, one emotional attachment. ifitwas merely the matter of money, he could have taken donation from some selected people. Consider his second technique. The political scenario was not favorable for the works undertaken by Eknathji because the work was viewed only with political perspectives. But there remained hardy any Governor and Minister whose door was not knocked by Eknathi. He personally visited each one of them. There ae hardy any states of India which have not participated in this grand work by not donating some money by the respective government. This validates the fact that if ‘we undertake any work with a good purpose then persons with any politcal ideology can be influenced and can be associated. So the prime focus in any work of knathji was to Connect Connect all sort of things: he was busy in connecting past to the present, he tried even to connect juxtaposing ideas. This trait of Eknathji had made him the medium for the ruling people during the time of ‘emergency in the year 1975 when the member from sangha parivar and the people believing in the democracy were in the al. Eknathjt Ranade knew how to come out from the situation, to whom to discuss. The people in the government alo had faith on Eknathjiand had the conviction that discussion can be done with Eknathi The significant role played by Eknathji was known to me as was with him and | could witness the event from avery cose comer. Itwasfelt ‘that knathji would be arested, would be putin jail but forthe sake of his personality it never happened. He strived to restrict further deteriorate ofthe situation. Eknathji played a key role for seeking a solution. As Eknathji Kept himself away from name and fame and was always engrossed in work so these happenings were never exposed from his side Eknathji had the knack of identifying the right kind of people. One day Eknathji asked me to come to the station and told that after getting refreshed somewhere near the tation, we would be going to ‘Mount Abu. Iwas not aware what sort of works were there, Eknathi looked tired and seemed that he might not get reservation as he was, traveling in the general compartment. tried to persuade him to take some rest buthe refused. So after getting refreshed wesstarted. ‘On the way, asked him the purpose of our vst Eknathji wanted to meet a Swami from RK Mission who staying in Abu was leading a diferent life ofhis own. We reached and | observed with wonder the ‘way he did Pranam to him. | had the opportunity to observe the things. He appealed to him that though he had severed ffom RK Mission, he could definitely join in such a grand scheme-the construction of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Assocation this grand scheme with all the attributes wll benefit and inspire the younger generation. Itwas really wonderful to conceive the trouble taken to come to Mount Abu ony forthe simple reason of associating the person to his and the way he was briefed thoroughly in every one hou for three days consecutively. Eknathji virtually lived the life of “One life one mission: He knew how to get people to make plan sucessful. He visualized involving the younger generation to the nation building endeavor. He appealed tothe youths you believe in the words of Swami Vivekananda, come and tive the life. Simply liking Swami Vivekananda is not enough; we should have some contribution forthe materialzation of the dream of Bharat Mata’ ‘With al spirit and enthusiasm he continued doing that. When there ‘were some interviews for youths in Gujarat to join them to the ion | also got opportunity to sit with interview panel Eknathji himself talked to the youths who could manage to pass the fist layer ofthe interview. And such impression Eknathis left on ‘them that they were eady to go straight with Eknathji from there itself wherever he wanted to send them. ‘Swami Vivekananda established Ramakrishna Mission. Another “organization-Vivekananda Kenda! was established to materialize ‘thesame ideals, which go forward shoulder to shoulder or sometime {get together and starts going parallel. Eknathjihad much carer the means as well as the target. He never compromised with the means which may adversely affect the final target. He was a perfectionist ‘and many of you might have seen it minutely. Crores of rupees were spent in the construction of the Rock ‘Memorial. But Eknathj used to live in a single room having atin roo. The world would not have made him culpable if he constructed a good room or a bungle. But upto the end Eknathji continued to stay inthat room only. Eknathjlis the best instance of doing everything to materialize the dream without doing anything for oneself. He has ‘made us understand by living the very life. | don't think ifanyone of us from the Sangh Parivar can emulate him in respect to perfection, He considered all wee detalls- suppose in case of a paper -he even did not compromise with the quality of paper. Once there wasashibir of RSS in Gujarat. His accommodation was arranged ina family. He could not get set with the family. He seemed to be disturbed. He had to stay for three days. | could not. enquire forthe frst two days. But inthe tid day I went and asked him if he had any difficulty in staying, He told that the tube light. seemed bending. The matter was tobe informed tothe media, Now, we don't have any difficulty even at 1 o¢lack night to inform the people in no time as the time has changed and the technology has been advanced, But at that time it was necessary that the media to be informed at the eariest about the further proceedings like cremation etc. That time Eknathji was present in Nagpur. He was asked to make the draft to be given to the media, Now, you can imagine the devotion of Eknathji towards Guryji But there was time constraint. He started to write. Eknathj’s hhandueriting was very tiny. He completed three; four lines - checked - threw the paper being not satisfied. Again wrote five, six ines and checked and threw it. Eknathji threw away 8-10 pieces of paper due tolack of perfection. All were very impatient and reminded Eknathji tohastenasit was getting late to inform the media. Please hury up” they old. But Eknathj was obsessed with the notion of perfection. The obsession was so much trong on him that he could not do it and [remember very well thatthe paper was snatched from him and was told tohim that whatever was written is perfect and it was sent to the media. It was a remarkable characteristic of Eknathji to take utmost cae that nota single word got displaced in his writing. His diary- | don't know how it is kept nowrhis method of writing diary was unique. He did not write dary as we write, He extracted the ‘mast useful words of a person he met and noted in his diary. He never lefthis diary even in dificult situation. He could never tolerate any sickness. He got uneasy ffom a litle sickness. He ot embarrassed even with ficker ofsickness and made others around him also worried He waxed childish in that time. Instead of delivering a lecture I opted to live some moments with Eknathjionce again as the intimacy with him wasso im, The words ate exuding from the bottom of my heart. Eknathjihad immense faith on the youths Swami Vivekananda said that fhe got thousand youths then he could do everything, To build AROHI | 2013-14 51. such youths that Swami Vivekananda envisioned was predominant in the mind of Eknathj. His life is studded with valuable lessons which provide us guidance to elevate our life to achieve the greatest of objectives. The teachings of Eknathji have inspired thousands of youths to dedicate their lives for the cause of the society. It will be great if we imbibe some of the valuable lessons from his life in the Eve of Mananeeya Eknathji Janma Shati Parva (MEJSP) which is being celebrated throughout the nation and beyond from 19th November 2014 to 19th November, 2015. Be Systematic It happens that we are sometime unable to locate even very important things that belong to us. Don't know where the notebook is-Where the Project Work has been kept. Has it been pilfered by our friends? Can it take wings and fly away or has evaded our rummage like a mirage? No! No! | myself have kept it somewhere. Give me sometime, | will find it out. Unable to get rid off your detestable exasperating habit? If we are suffering f rom such flaws in our habit then we should learn from the life of Eknathji how to be systematic. Eknathji used to be on tour for the chunk of the times, He had a bag which contained his belongings. In the dark also Eknathji could direct anybody to bring out certain item form his bag without a whit of mistake. He knew exactly where the things were placed in his bag. And it never went wrong. Let us try to be systematic in keeping our things everywhere-in our Study Room, in our classroom etc. Work in a Group Eknathji’'s father the Railway Department and their quarter used to be nearby the railway station. Little Nath used to look intently at the trains passing through the station. He had been always impressed by the movement of a train. A train is one of the best allegories for ‘Team Work. Howa leader leads all other people in a group and the movement of members only represents the movement of the group in the same way the engine of the train lead other bogies. Eknathji always stressed on working in organizational form as the concerted efforts of all the people towards achieving a target always make it effective. We should learn how to work ina group. was in Develop the Habit of ‘Double Vision’ We perform various types of works. Some are very much immediate and urgent. In many times it happens that we got engaged in the immediate works only and got blurred of the most valuable work or could not correlate the immediate work with the long range objectives. Eknathji had the quality of seeing what was to be done ultimately and what is to be done for that AROHI | 2013-14 53 immediately. Similarly he had the wonderful blend of idealism and practical wisdom. Bring about simple Solution for a problem Problems of any sorts appear huge and mammoth before us. It seems that the problem is gi for it. But if we use our discretion we can solve it in no time. Eknathji used to provide very simple solution to problems which appeared very huge. One day Eknathji noticed that one of the Karyakartas looked very haggard and tired. On being asked about the reason, the Karyakarta told about a peculiar problem. The Karyakarta told that while visiting many villages and towns in connection with his work, he had to stay in different houses. Generally the houses were small and he slept in the front room. In the night when he got up to relieve himself, he was very much troubled for the thought that he might step on some one on the way to the bathroom. Due to this apprehension, he stopped drinking water from the afternoon itself. But in spite of all, he was not able to sleep properly at night. After listening to his problem Eknathji assured to take him to a doctor. On meeting him next time Eknathji took the Karyakarta to a general shop and purchased a small size torch and told him smilingly, “Keep this with him at night’, The solution was so simple. intic and there is no solution Dream as an Emperor, not as a beggar The grand vision envisaged by Eknathji while constructing of Vivekananda Kendra 54 AROHI | 2013-14 S Rock Memorial and the execution of the same brings out the quality of thinking big in midst of all the hurdles. Through the edifice Eknathji involved and consolidated the entire India to promulgate the ideas of Swami Vivekananda. He did not restrict only to the erection of a statue with rock but also ensured to institute a living memorial to the messages of Swami Vivekananda. transmit Check your language Eknathji was a perfectionist. He was a very punctilious writer of letters. He was very much careful about using each word in his letters. His systemic bent of mind is reflected in his writing. He used to choose the words like mother chooses the right type of food for her child. Eknathji was very much particular about the use of the most apt word in expression. If he used inapt word then he would apologize for it. (Education Officer), VKVAP Trust ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is a popular proverb with a clear message. It is a pertinent question whether the relevance of this proverb is understood by all stakeholders of Education. Many of the parents are comfortabl: at the education as basically a two way process in which the teacher and the taught are looking primarily involved and hence their roleis only to provide resources mainly financial resources. This approach makes a parent ignore his and his family’s role and also the role of the community he/or she belongs. This is the prime reason for increase in commercialization of education as these schools device various plans to cater the need of parents. They come up with various plans and strategies the satisfaction’: And hence the broader aim and for ‘customer objective of education is kept aside. Recently a Principal shared one of his experiences. A parent of a child rushed to the school office demanding a written apology from the Principal for the misbehavior shown to his child by one of his classmates during the school interval. He shouted in front of other students that he pays money and the school alone has to ensure that the incidents are not taking place. The parent is holding an important position in a well reputed institution. The parent here had the attitude that | am paying the fee and hence my child is to be 56 — AROHE | 2013-14 PPS involvement J in Education ur taken care and that is the only responsibility of the school. It is not a stray incident. Many of the Principals have such similar stories to share. All teachers - parents meetings always end with the bottom line that the student's learning is the sole responsibility” of teachers and they show displeasure at any forum when the expectation of the parents are not met with. Many studies show that the involvement of parents, family, and community in education correlates with good academic performance and school improvement: Joyce L. Epstein, in a book titled ‘School, Partnerships; argued that school, family, and Family, and Community community are important “Spheres of Influence" on children’s development and that a child's educational development is enhanced when these three work collaboratively toward shared goals. Another interesting finding out is that of background of the parents, the involvement of irrespective income and educational parents matters to ensure the educational development of their ward. The involvement of community in Education would help the educators and schools work with much more satisfaction. There are different levels of involvement. Some of the widely accepted involvements are: Involvement through the mere use of a service (such as enrolling children in school) Q Involvement through the contribution of money, materials, and labor etc. Q Involvement through ‘attendance’ (eg. at parents’ meetings at school), implying pas e acceptance of decisions made by others; Q Involvement through consultation on a particular issue; Q Participation as implementators of delegated ision making at every stage,’ including identification of problems, the study of feasibility, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The first one is Universal in nature as with the awareness the majority of parents express make a point to enroll their children in school. This has resulted in increase of literacy rate in the country. The next two involvements are partially understood. | was in a village school as part of certain service activities and could see deplorable condition of the school. It is also observed that the involve decline as their children go up in and there is a dramatic drop once students reach in Class IX. Parents see lots of roadblocks for getting involved in their child’s education such as lack of time, feeling uncomfortable to communicate with school staff and the conception that parents are called only for explaining undesired behavior of their ward etc. These have to be addressed by the school to encourage the parents to get involved in the school activities. The last three involvements are in the infant stages. The parents and community members have reservations due to the lack of proper attitude towards their role in educational activities; negative schooling experiences themselves, lack of proper role models who show keen interest by keeping away selfish motives etc. are some of the limiting factors. The management committees of the schools are either for name sake or it is a forum to get When the community come forward to own the schools and privileges or certain benefits. understand the responsibility the situation would definitely improve. This would result in boosting the Moral of the staff, constructing, repairing and improving school facilities, providing local culture information and addressing the factors that contribute to the educational problems such truancy, indiscipline, substance use, drop out and poor academic standard. It Would be an ideal if the schools, homes and communities. collaborate with each other effectively to discharge the responsibilities of ‘educating the younger ones. Itis also the need of the hour! But then in the next moment I am aware of my limitations. | often think about this amazing nature of the world. The journey of a shy village girl from a small interior village to be the in -charge of a Middle school where she gets opportunity to groom hundreds of young minds is really incredible! It is all because of that Golden Touch which has changed my life! In the last part of July in 1982, | was with my mother in the town of Tezu. Tezu is always a wonder for me. Even though a couple of times | had been there | wondered at everything in Tezu. The rows of shops, colorful dresses, neatly arranged eatables in confectionary and of course men and women with colorful dresses speaking different and strange languages all left me bewitched. Walking behind my mother like a shadow for not losing her from my sight in the busy place, | enjoyed everything. | was relishing certain eatables and trying to pace with my mother through one of the lanes of Tezu. Suddenly, | felt a touch on my shoulder which made me to stop. That golden touch was from my Mandakini Didi whom fondly we called as Manda Didi. She pulled me close and smiled at me. On seeing her, my eyes filled with tears and | fervently hugged her. Lovingly she scolded me “Why didn’t you report to school even after two months of _ its re-opening?” My mother who proceeded some distance came 58 AROHI | 2013-14 back to us and said in broken Hindi mixed with Assamese to Didi that she had lot of problem for sending her to school. She narrated her family problems and told her that she won't be able to send her to school. Didi informed her that the school had sent a good number of _ letters requesting to send her to school. Not a single letter reached my native village Goiliang since it was a remote village in the Anjaw district. Didi told that now because she found me, she would take me back to school immediately. My mother was not at all ready to send me so unexpectedly. Without any second thought Manda Didi told her that she would arrange everything for her and she would definitely take me to school. The determination in Mandakini Didi's words and her affection has melted my mother. She nodded her head as a sign of consent! Even though | was happy to go to school, | cried. | was feeling sad to go away from my mother. The surroundings of my home, my little world in the village of Goilang was beckoning me. But the effect of the golden touch was more than my little pain and | started walking with her virtually nothing in my hand. We set out for school which is 13 Km away from Tezu in Tafrogam _ Village. Mandakini Didi was holding my hand tightly. The image of my mother with tearful eyes only shook me like the rickety jeep in which we were travelling. | gazed at the dark lush green trees and bushes on the way and | started dreaming varied things. When | woke up with the yelling of scores of girls, | could see the hostel where | had spent 8 months previously. All my friends were there in frontof the hostel. Aparna Didi, Rekha Didi all came to meet me. My pain vanished and | was feeling too shy as 1 became conscious about my shabby dresses, long loose brown hair and old slippers. But nobody noticed any of these and they cheered me up! The next morning | was dressed in clean neat uniform which was arranged by the teachers. | got now busy with the school routine and all extra-curricular activities and somewhere far | left my sadness of leaving my mother. | started moving on ... | was never behind in my dass both academically and non- academically. | stood first in my class in Board Examination! Today, when | think about all my teachers of VKV Tafrogam, | get filled with gratitude and get overwhelmed with emotions. | was shaped mainly by three Gems, so pure at heart and they were with the girls in day and night. Every girl owes to Rekha Didi, Aparna Didi and Manda DidicThey along with dedicated teachers put all their efforts in moulding and shaping us in every aspect. They always gave positive reinforcement which helped me to improve more. They always stood by me whenever there was a need. Even when | could not resist. showing my childhood tantrums, they handled me with delicacy. They devoted all the time for the care of all of us. remembered we girls would play with kitchen sets, making our own little homes, playing different roles of mother, father and child. This was our favourite game on the weekends which every girl loved to play. We girls would always invite Manda Didi as guest with full honour and respect. She would be fed with the food (made of mud, flowers and leaves) which she would take and act as if she enjoyed the meal to please us. She seemed very much pleased. She would appreciate our arrangements of the household utensils (made of lids of bottles, leaves, broken soap cases and — wooden blocks). There was learning in every activity. We never wore torn clothes. Our torn clothes were collected and on the weekends Didis would sit and stitch them til we could do it by ourselves. We were always kept under their eyes. All the activities like how to take bath, how to wash clothes, how to dry clothes, how to arrange shoes etc were daily checked meticulously. Slowly we got so accustomed with these that we began to check ourselves and do the same for the junior classes. We began to follow them and always enacted like them. The winter of Tafrogam in those days was extremely cold. Our skin and lips got cracks and we would tum dry. So in the evening we were asked to sit in front of the hostels and would apply mustard il on our legs, hands and face from one common big can. We felt burning sensations but later on it would give us soothing feeling. These small incidents may seem insignificant but it remained as an example of love and care showered by our teachers. Another very important feature of ‘our school days was the story telling sessions. Every class started with a story. 1 still remember our bed time stories. Surrounding our teachers on their bed, keeping our heads and eyes static and listening to the stories was most thrilling for us. These stories taught us a lot. We became keen listeners. Even today when | remember those stories my face gets lifted up with a smile. Whenever we were noisy in the classroom they would come ilently and start with these lines ‘Once Upon a time’ and immediately the class would be silent. | remember Manda Didi’s stories of Shivaji with expression, and with proper modulation of voice and intonation. We would be cartied away with her stories and would use the slogan "Har Har Maha Dev" These stories strengthen our moral education. Our bond towards each other grew more intense due to there story telling sessions. I remember | was not so good at study but with their counseling, appreciation and motivation | could improve my _ study gradually. As I grew up my teachers trained me as they needed me to groom up will. They trained in taking part in all Seminar, Science Ex Essay competitions and trained me in all ways to be academically excellent. They gave me ideals, but also saw to it that | grew up naturally so that | will be able to understand the real problems of life in the days to come. In class IX I was given a form to fill up. Itwas a sponsorship form. That very year only | came to know that | was a sponsored child. Ifelt great to think how my teachers never made me feel that way. | knew my parents could never afford to keep me in VKV and | would not have got a chance to study in VKV Tafrogam which was an abode of peace, an abode of pure love. Our teachers were strict, ined and to make them happy we followed all the rules and regulations and indirectly we got adapted t Today when | think of my days at VKV Tafrogam | feel nostalgic and thrilled. Every problem today is solved by the knowledge gained from my school days. Yes, when today the educationists talk of the ethics of a teacher and framed tests for teacher's profile. My teachers could be fitted well in all the frames made for a good teacher. | strongly desire to stand up to their wish and do the utmost for the society. | owe everything to my teachers. Today if anything is accounted well in me this is because of them. | always remember the golden touch of Manda Didi and persistent efforts of all the other Didis. The golden touch gave me great golden days for me. | bow my head for that. by Smt. The snippets of their acts which have come to me through proud alumni and senior teachers always enchant- ed me. My attitude is greatly shaped with that. | always looked forward for such work which makes me to stretch myself from my normal routine. The schools were given appeal to reach all the Secondary and Higher Secondary schools of the State with the message of Swami Vivekananda on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's Sharda Shati Samaroh. Vivek Utkarsh, the mega written quiz was one of the unique Programmes planned for that in which more than 8000 students took part from 184 Govt and Private schools from all the districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The heated discussion in one of the Staff meetings on the plan of reaching out to all the schools of Changlang District got stuck up with the challenge of reaching to Vijayanagar, a very remote place in the Changlang District. All were discussing in detail about the difficulty in reaching to Vijayanagar. Vijayanagar isa narrow stripped mountain valley surrounded on three ~sides 60 AROHI | 2013-14 (Northeast, South and West) by Myanmar while from Northwestern side, enclave by stretches of Namdhapa National Park. There is no surface road connection to the area and is totally cut-off from rest of the world. The only conveyance for the 6000 population of Vijayanagar is AN-32, the transport flight operated by IAF. It is said the people of Vijaya- nagar often look to the sky, not for rain, but for the fair weather, which facilitates the get in of the sortie from behind the snow-clad mountain. Most of the people rely on six days foot journey to Miao for the essentials. Foot marching for six days through thick forest, steep accidental slopes and across the gushing waters really puts the life into stake. In many places the foot-track passes through pre- cipitous slopes. In between 27 to 31 miles from Miao, it negotiates steep cliff overlooking the river below. People crawl along the slope climbing up and down and holding rocks, twigs, plants and roots. During the discussion, respected Principal Shri Shyamal Chakraborty glanced at me and said “We ought to do that” That was enough to ignite my commit- ment to stretch myself. But the entire event turned not fan easy one. Unaware of the formidable situations which were awaiting me | started my journey with my provisions, _ light beddings, registration forms and books for distributions to the participants. I started my journey on 27 November, 2013. | reached Miao in a vehicle and started search- ing for a co - traveler as the uncertainty was looming large in my mind. But alas! No company | could find to guide me in my journey of five days walk. At last | could spot Mr Vikram Rai, who ‘came from Vijaynagar for certain purchases and other works at Miao on 28th November and we planned our journey on the next day. The first leg of journey was for 22 Km from Miao in a Max Pick-up Van till the motorable road ends. Then our walking expedition started! There was narrow road with lot of landslide areas. Wherever we find landslide, we need climb the mountain through a narrow path and reach in the narrow road. | was told that road cutting went on many times but had to abandon due heavy landslides. Every one kilometer there is one landslide and we had to repeat the process. In the dusk we reached in a forest camp. Vikram said “We shall halt tonight here and resume our journey on second day’. There were only two other people excluding us. The chowkider and the forest guard were very kind to us and made supper for us. We slept in a corner of the camp with a feeling that we need to wake up in the morning as the journey in the next days are treacherous and we need to reach at decided location for night shelter. Next day, on 30th November we started our journey in the early morning. | was heading with a so many dreams. We walked and intermittently stopped and drank water for some time. We had to traverse 52 miles to reach Lichu village where we were supposed to stay that day. Around 4 o'clock we reached the village. It was the first house | had seen during the last 2 days journey. We headed to one of the houses and requested them to allow us for a night halt. No one in that small house knew Hindi they know only Lichu. But they showed good hospitality and allowed us to stay in their house. The old woman in the house called me ‘Mafa’ means teacher. She examined the provision which | was carrying and then she took only small quantities from it- just needed only for me. The food was delicious. All of us took together. She even made a packet food for us before 5 am in the morning and handed over to us. Our walk started at 5 am. Legs were aching but my spirit propelled me to go ahead. Today our destination was ‘Kheirbari’ a small village near a river. | was fascinated by the picturesque landscape of the places we were crossing. | felt as if | was entering in a mysterious place. Here too we requested one of the houses to give shelter and food. The food prepared was delicious with fish caught from the river flowing nearby. But then the proximity to the river threw another challenge as the place was very cold. The blanket which | was carrying was not sufficient to battle the cold. | wore two pants, put on jacket, woolen cap and socks with a hope that 1 would get some sleep. But that did not work much. But | was not left to suffer. The house owner came to my room with a good blanket and covered me by thinking | was in deep sleep. That gave me much relief and | slept well after that. On the fourth day we started our journey early morning as my companion told me that we had a long journey that day. We stopped very less that day and around four we reached ‘Gandhi Gramy-a small village. The village, surprisingly a speckles plain, was surrounded by hills from all sides. We stayed the night there in the village. We were exhausted and slept up to seven in the morning but | was elated as | was told that we would arrive at our destination that day early. That was the fifth day of our journey. We reached ‘Phapar Bari’ and the residence of my companion at around 2 o'clock; Vijaynagar was two hours walk from there. With his persisting request | decided to halt at his residence that day. The journey had made a good friendship out of us and | could not refuse his request. Next day after reaching Vijaynagar 1 went straight to meet the Principal of Govt Secondary School, Vijaynagar. After going through the letters and my briefing, he readily agreed to conduct the Quizand directed the teachers to give me all the assistance. Along with some teachers | went to Class IX and X and addressed the students who listened tome with rapt attention. The Staff and the students told that such type of competition was never conducted in the school. All of them registered their names for the competition and | distributed the books to them and decided to stay for five more days to conduct the written exam and take back the answer sheets along with me. When | came out of the school, the students cheered at me to say good bye - some of them shouted "You are the first person to come to our school to conduct a competition! Come Again!” | looked at the tall_mountains which surrounded the small and beautiful place. A long return journey was waiting for me. On the way, though feverish due to long exhaustion, | felt happy and elated and said myself “There is a great joy in life to do Swamiji’s work". by Sti Keshab Upadhayaya Teacher, VKV Kharsang AROHI | 2013-14 61 A Journey Within (Kumari Deepshikha is one of the 44 students selected on the basis of their performance in Vivek Utkarsh for o trip to kenyakumarr jen quiz organized in connection with the 150th Birth Anniversary of ‘Swami Vivekananda. Both good and great have not only have alphabetic similarities but also similar in their spirits. f we want to become great, we have to become good at first. For being good someone hardly needs a lot of wealth and power but in fact a passion for serving the poor, destitute, sick and the old who are earnestly in need of our and care. Usually people have formed a habit to wait and watch everything without acting on it. This would bring us nothing. We would be only a parasite and will become a big burden on this earth.
