definitely grown in this area. Doing this
assessment before, I was 3 weeks into my
program. Now, 7 or so weeks until
completing my program, I have grown to
know the value of student affairs and how
it will continue to be of value to students
and universities.
This area focuses a lot on hiring and hiring
techniques, supervision, and
understanding how things get done in the
workplace or organizations. This is an area
that from experiences, such as being on a
hiring committee, co-supervising 25
students, and being on an executive board
for a student organization, I have grown in.
Before, I had knowledge of the financial
aspects of this area, but I have grown to
know how to do other things that relate to
effective and efficient human and
organizational resources.
I am beginning to grow in this area since I
am currently taking a Higher Education
Law course. I will say as these first 9
weeks have passed, I now understand the
difference of public and private, know
some of the big cases in higher education
and understand how these things affect
higher education. I will continue to grow in
this area as the semester progresses, but I
will never know everything, as law and
policy issues in higher education continue
to change every day.
Leadership focuses on the skills and
knowledge of being a leader, knowing the
various leadership styles, understanding
how to be a team player, and knowing
personal values and perspectives on the
topic. I would say, for the most part, I am a
team player. I want to see goals met. I also
know it means to be an effective leader in
my eyes. Coursework, work experiences,
and other requirements and experiences
have given me the opportunity to gain
knowledge in this area.
My Interventions course helped me begin
my growth in this area. During that time, I
learned how important it is to have a worklife balance, implement healthy habits in
my life, and how to set my own personal
beliefs and commitments. This is an area

that I can still grow in, as I am still learning
myself, setting meaningful goals for my
work, both school and career wise, and
working on reflecting on my personal and
professional life and development.
This area focuses on student development
and theory both applying and practicing
it, but also understanding how differences
individuals have can influence their
development while in college. Before, I was
low in this area and had recently begun my
College Student course. A year later, I can
say I know various theories relating to
student development, even those specific
to identities, and can apply them. I know
that you cannot completely apply a theory
to an individual, but I continue to practice
this in my everyday work and see how
these theories can apply to students that I
see.

Part 2. Reflection.
Reflecting on this assignment and the 10 competency areas, I see the major
trend/pattern of growth. When this assignment was done before, we were only a few
weeks into the HESA program. Now, completing this assignment for the second
time, I am approximately 7 weeks from graduating from the program. The courses,
experiences, and work in my graduate assistantship that I have had in the past year
and a half have helped me grow in all of these areas. I did not give myself a 4 in any
area because I feel that I have not completely mastered any of these areas. There
are areas for improvement in all the areas, especially those that I am just getting
real exposure in. Going into any student affairs career, having some basic
knowledge of these areas will help you, and I believe that no matter where I end up
after graduation or in the future, I will be continue to grow.
