    Anna Ivanovna Shchetinina was the first female captain in the Soviet Union. She was born in 1908 in Vladivostok to a railway switchman and entered the navigation department of the Vladivostok Marine School in 1925. After graduating, she worked for a shipping company in the Kamchatka Peninsula starting as an ordinary seaman, and by age 24 had received her navigator's license, becoming the first female captain. She participated in World War II and received many awards, with a monument now honoring her achievements.
