brought the whole network down

Users of the PS3 couldn't play online for a


whole month

Claimed they were showing weakness in


their system and they claimed not to have
stolen anything

Results

Huge uproar in the gaming community

Cost Sony millions of dollars

Created huge mistrust in Sony

Caused Online websites to enhance security


measures

Shooting of Michael Brown

In 2014 police shot an unarmed AfricanAmerican man which would become known
as the Ferguson shooting

Riots and uproar followed this shooting

Anonymous felt like it was their duty to act


as vigilantes and take this matter into their
own hands

Released name of the policeman who was


involved on their twitter account for
everyone to see

Got banned from twitter as a result

Hacked the KKKs website and shut it down

Released numerous identities of the KKK


members online

2013 Credit Card Scandal

5 talented independent hackers, attacked


the JetBlue airways and J.C Penney websites

Stole 160 million credit card numbers

Sold them online for 10 a piece

Total loss of over 300 million for the


companies

Led to huge mistrust in these organisations

5 men were eventually caught and


sentenced to life in a high profile prison

A US attorney claimed these men threaten


our economic well-being, our privacy, and
our national security

Heroes or villains?

In my opinion there is no definitive answer

Although I respect the Anonymous group


they certainly do a lot of questionable
things

The majority of other hackers who abuse


their talents are definitely villains
