ID Brief for Narrated Animation

Title or Topic of Animation:

Date Created: March 9, 2015
Designers Name: Traci D. Hogrefe
Time: 35 seconds
General Overview/Need: The animation will clarify the Gestalt Principle of Common Fate. The
textbook, Designing with the Mind in Mind by Jeff Johnson, describes the principle well, but
since this principle has to do directly with movement, animation would be a good addition to this
text.
Justification for Animation: The Gestalt Principle of Common Fate is related to the Proximity
and Similarity principles: Like them it affects whether we perceive objects as grouped. The
Common Fate principle states that objects that move together are perceived as grouped or
related. Using this principle, we want to help the audience understand and visualize how the
same movement to different objects or images can cause them to see a relationship or to group
the objects. Narration is important to explain the principle being shown.
Audience/Learners: The learners are the students in the IST 526 course. These learners are
diverse in age and have likely read text and seem still images of the Common Fate principle in
their text. Many may understand the concept of the Common Fate principle, but a narrated
animation will clarify any confusion.
Instructional/ Cognitive/Multimedia Strategies: The instruction will be given through the
audio channel to allow the user to focus on the images being shown and words being
verbalized. This integrates a multimedia principle which includes both words and graphics (Clark
& Mayer, 2011). Example images will appear, representing their groups based on the movement
that they make.
Delivery/Use Instructions: The eLearning module is uploaded to
http://itcdland.csumb.edu/~thogrefe/. Here, you can find different versions of the module within
the ist526 folder. The module is also accessible on my ePortfolio under Term 2 =>IST 525 =>
Mini eProject1.
Resources Used: Images are used from public domain images (publicdomainpictures.net,
openclipart.org, & clker.com), the audio is directly recorded on to the authoring tool (Storyline),
and the pie chart is created in PowerPoint. YouTube, Lynda.com, Microsoft help forum, and
Articulate help forums are used to solve a vast of technical issues.
