MAE 4421: Control of Mechanical and

Aerospace Systems
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Spring 2015
Homework 1
This homework is a review of concepts from MAE 3401, Modeling and Simulation of Dynamic Systems.
1)

a) Derive the state-space model for the system above. The output is the displacement of the mass
in the direction shown. Leave your model in symbolic form.
b) For the remainder of the problem, assume the following values for system parameters:
= 60

1 = 160 /

= 10

= 1

= 50

2 = 50/

= 1.2 /
= 2

2 = 50/
1 = 12 /

By hand, determine the system transfer function, (). Your answer may be expressed with
numerical coefficients.

c) What are the system poles and zeros? Show or explain how you determined these values.
d) Apply the final value theorem to determine the steady-state displacement that results from a
constant 1 input.
e) Determine an analytical expression for the systems step response. Show all of your work.
f)

Use MATLAB to simulate and plot the systems step response.

g) Use MATLAB to simulate and plot the systems impulse response.

h) Use MATLAB to simulate and plot the response to a 0.1 , 0.25 square wave input.

2)

For the generator: = 1

a) Derive a state-space model for the system in symbolic form. The output is the load voltage,
().
b) For the remainder of the problem, assume the following values for system parameters:
= 200 /

= 5

= 0.2 2

= 100

= 20 /

= 100

By hand, determine the system transfer function, (). Your answer may be expressed with
numerical coefficients.
c) What are the system poles and zeros? Show or explain how you determined these values.
d) By hand, determine () for () = 5 sin(2 10 ).
e) Use MATLAB to generate the Bode plot for this system. Your frequency axis should have units of
, the gain axis should have units of , and the phase axis should have units of degrees.
f)

Use MATLAB to simulate and plot () for () = 5 sin(2 10 ). Verify that the results
from parts d, e, and f all agree.
