Physical Science

Mrs. Scofield
East Rutherford High School
Spring 2015

Physical Science is a survey course which includes topics from both physics and
chemistry. Physics topics include forces and motion, energy, electricity and
magnetism, and waves. Chemistry topics will include atomic history and theory,
chemical bonding and nomenclature, and reactions.

Course Objectives are determined by the North Carolina Department of Public

Instruction.
A student enrolled in Physical Science will:
1. Understand forces and motion.
2. Understand types, properties, structure, and interactions of matter,
including radioactivity.
3. Understand energy and its conservation and transfer.
4. Understand electricity and magnetism.

State mandated testA cumulative NC Final Exam is given at the end of this
course. This exam counts as 20% of your course grade.

Class Policies and Expectations

!Communication
Angel.rcsnc.org--All class resources and lessons accessed from here.
dscofield.weebly.com--Daily activities, concepts covered, and
assignments posted on class Daily Record blog page.
dscofield@rcsnc.org--email (mail in Angel can also be used)
!Class Notebook --divided into the following sections: vocabulary,
class notes, homework problems, labs, and tests. May occasionally be used for
quizzes. Your notebook is an important resource to prepare for the
comprehensive test at the end of the semester
!Daily Notes-- It is the students responsibility to get any notes missed due to
absence.
!Daily Classwork/Homework-- Homework will be used used to practice and

master the concepts you will be tested on. You will receive a garden this work
based on participation and effort.
!Labs-- LAB SAFETY RULES WILL BE FOLLOWED AT ALL TIMES. Failure to adhere to
lab safety procedures or horseplay in the lab will result in a zero for that activity
and possible loss of lab privileges. Labs missed due to absence will be made up
at the teacher's discretion.
!Test and Quiz Grades--Grades will be based on mastery of the Learning Goals.
Students will be able to revise their Learning Goal grades within the six weeks the
unit was taught. Time and method required for re-evaluation will be determined
by the instructor.
!ProjectsIndividual or team projects and WAC assignments will be assigned
throughout the semester.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY OF ANY TYPE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

Cheating
will result in a 0/F grade for work as well as parent meetings and possible
administrative referral. Work receiving a 0 for cheating may NOT be redone.

Grading
Six weeks grades will be based on mastery of Learning Goals representing what a
Chemistry student should know, understand and be able to do based on the New
Essential Standards for science.
Each unit will include a number of learning goals which all contribute an equal
amount toward your final grade.
Your mastery of each goal will be determined by a test at the conclusion of the
unit.
Homework assignments and classwork are CRITICAL--You MUST complete your
work to master the material taught.
Each learning goal grade will have 2 partsa work grade and a test grade. The
work grade will be determined by the teacher based on your performance in
class activities and assignments to learn the goal. This will count as 40% of the
learning goal grade. Your test grade will determine the other 60%.
Class assignments, projects, and quizzes will factor into your grade as
determined by the teacher.

East High Grading Scale will be followed:

A = 93-100
B = 85-92
C = 77-84
D = 70-76
F = 0-69

Class Rules
1) BE ON TIME AND READY TO WORK.
2) BRING ALL MATERIALS to class including notebook, pencil and/or

pen, and any class assignments.

3) NO EATING OR DRINKING IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.
4) Be RESPECTFUL to instructor and to classmates.
5) NO BATHROOM BREAKS allowed during class.
6) DO NOT TOUCH lab equipment or materials until instructed to

do so.

In Case of Absence
!Class activities and assignments will be recorded on my website daily. If you are
absent from class YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for checking these resources and getting
ALL make-up work, notes, and turning in your assignments.
! You have until the end of the week in which you are absent to hand in make-up
work, unless special arrangements are made with me. At the end of each week,
any missing work will receive a zero.
! In the case of prolonged absence, arrangements will be made on a case to
case basis. Any work previously assigned and due on the day of your absence is
due the day you return.

About Technology
!Students are expected to use technology responsibly. Using your computer
in class is a privilege, not a right!
!Some assignments in this class will be submitted electronically, so you should
pay close attention to properly naming and organizing your files in folders on
your computer.
!Students must remember their usernames and passwords for all accounts.
Not being able to access your account will not be an excuse for not
completing an assignment.
!No extension of deadlines will occur due to technology issues such as computer
crashes. Dont wait until the last minute to complete your assignments, and always
save and back up your work.
