Year 10 Task 1 Altered Reality

Digital Photography and
Imaging
DATE DUE:

Term 1 Week 7 (Theory)

Term 1 Week 10 (Making)

WEIGHTING: 20% (Making 60% - Theory 40%)

OUTCOMES ASSESSED:
5.4
5.9

Investigates the world as a source of ideas, concepts & subject matter for photographic & digital media works
Uses the frames to make different interpretations of photographic & digital works

TASK DESCRIPTION: Task 1 comprises three distinct parts. The first (the pre-production phase)
supports the development of your understanding of the works of other digital photographers and involves
some research and reflection. The second (the production phase), requires you to complete a number of
photo shoots to produce your own images. The third and final stage (post-production) requires you to
manipulate your images, using Photoshop, to produce a Digital Portfolio reflecting your creative journey.

Part 1: PRE-PRODUCTION- Research and Documentation of Practice

DESCRIPTION: This step is an investigation of contemporary photographers and their creation of images
that alter reality through the use of distortion, altered perspective and Photoshop manipulation.
A) INVESTIGATION: You are to create a visual and written record of your investigation and choice of
images. Your chosen images are to then be used to develop your ideas for a digital photo shoot to be
undertaken later in this task.
Firstly, undertake an internet search using Pinterest for images relating to the following subjects:

Altered Perspective- Digital photography that tricks the eye by changing the viewpoint.

Post-Modern Fantasy- Appropriated Surreal artworks that have a dream-like quality

created by referencing the images of other artists as a starting point to creating your
own artwork by using a composite of multiple digital images that are manipulated and
arranged using digital Imaging tools.

Then, analyse each image that you pin with a description to show that you have reflected in some way. You
could consider the main compositional features of the image: the camera angle, composition, techniques
used to create the image.
B) RESEARCH/REFLECTION: Using the internet and any other suitable resources, choose 1 of the
following artists to do a detailed 200-300 word analysis of their practice with reference to one of their
images making observations about their technical and aesthetic approach (discuss their use of composition,
perspective, and techniques etc.).

Part 2: PRODUCTION- Capturing, selecting and archiving your Digital Images

DESCRIPTION:
This step allows you to adopt a wide range of approaches to capture photographs. The Post Modern Frame
is used and the application of what you have learnt in pre-production is demonstrated in photo shoots - both
at school and outside school on location.
You are asked to investigate ideas and come to class prepared to photograph the following:
Class work:
Personal Choice:

Altered Perspective, Portraits with Props, Lighting Effects

Location Photo shoot (may use Props)

The Post Modern Frame is used to help you to gain ideas from the practice and artworks of other artists. It
is meant as a starting point and to encourage you to adopt a more creative interpretation of the task. You
must produce a series of Raw Digital Photographs representing each Photo shoot from the themes above.
5 of these will be selected for the final stage of this task. You will then further develop, manipulate and
digitally edit four images from this selection using Photoshop CS6.
The class work topics will be directed by your teacher and completed in class time. The personal choice
topics are of your own choice and must be completed outside school. You will need to produce samples
from all topic areas for discussion and review.
Present folders of each of your photo-shoot images on your Weebly website for review and assessment by
Week 10 of Term 1.

Part 3: POST-PRODUCTION- Manipulating Images and Producing a Digital Portfolio

DESCRIPTION:
This final step requires you to critically evaluate the photographs taken by you in Part 2 and choose the
most effective 4 images to further develop using Digital Imaging. You will then make adjustments (cropping,
colour balance, contrast, etc.) and manipulate the image (using lasso, magic wand, blur, clone and move
tools etc.) using Photoshop before assembling the material as a digital slide show presentation suitable for
viewing by an audience.
PRODUCTION:
24 images taken from all 4 photo shoots (i.e. your best 5 RAW images from each of the 4 subject areas and
your four completed Digital Images) will make up your final presentation. This is to be presented in your
Weebly as a slideshow.
