Adolescent Physical development:

-Adolescents go through a rapid physical development stage called puberty, (Oswalt, 2015).
-Most growth in height generally occurs during one single growth period known as a growth
spurt, (Oswalt, 2015).
Atypical physical development:
-Abnormal weight gain or loss.
-Handwriting is hard to decipher.
Language:
-Adolescents are able to use complex sentences in both oral and written sentences, (Speech
Language resources, 2015).
-They have the ability to understand and use figurative language, (Speech language resources,
2015).
Atypical language development:
-Inability to comprehend metaphors.
-Shows difficulty in using complex sentences both orally and written.
Cognitive:
-Ability to think in a more abstract manner, (Oswalt, 2015).
-During this period of development adolescents, Believe they are exempt from ordinary laws of
nature and nothing bad can happen to them, (Barbour, 2013).
Atypical Cognitive development:
-When an adolescent has no desire to thrive in any area in life.
-Inability to recall large amounts of information.
Social/Emotional development:
-ability to express personal feelings
-Larger friend circle, more complex friendships
Atypical social/emotional development:
-Lack of friends
-Shows very little or no emotions.
Moral reasoning/self-regulation development:
-Understand right from wrong and make good choices.
-Ability to think abstractly

Atypical moral reasoning/self-regulation development:


-Disrespect towards authority figures.
-Doesnt seem he/she is able to make decisions on his/her own.
-Bullying others
Social Influence:
-The biggest social influence during the adolescent developmental stage is peer relationships.
Cultural Influence:
-Culture can determine how quickly an adolescent becomes independent.
Strategy:
-Keep an open mind and encourage conversation.
-Find out what is demotivating the adolescent from wanting to learn or go to school.
-Never hover or hound a child, let them know you are there for them and ask what you can do to
help.
-Give the adolescent some freedom, and spend quality time with him or her too.
