ELL Interview

Concerns
-

Split between two schools, Springfield Middle and E. Russell Hicks. The
students do not have someone available to them in the building at all times.
Not enough support staff. There isnt any funding allotted for this. Any money
would come from a year by year grant.

Goals
-

For all students to receive accommodations on a daily basis for assignments

and assessments.
Support students and staff by providing push in support, and pull-out
support
Pull-out support should include: mini grammar lessons, direct writing
instruction, reading fluency and vocabulary, speaking and listening activities,
providing background knowledge, studying, and homework assistance.
Create individual plans to best meet the students needs.

Requirements
-

Students must take the practice ELL test called MODEL in October.
Students must take the ACCESS test in the new year (January/February). Their
scores are reported to MSDE. County growth should be 0.5 and a certain
percentage of students are expected to test out of the program.
Check in with staff to see how ELL students are progressing in their classes.
Attend parent/teacher conferences and any special meetings concerning ELL
students.

Recommendations for Principals

-

Support the ELL staff. They are very short-handed and have multiple schools
to juggle.
Provide professional development for teachers on this topic. Many classroom
teachers will be on their own with the ELL students.
