The Beautiful and Damned Notes:

Chapter 1:
The book starts off with a man named Anthony Patch. His family was
rich, so he had a pretty good life. He didnt want to live in America he;
he wanted to go abroad. But he ended up going to Harvard. He
graduated in 1909, when he was only 20 years old. He then went
abroad again to Rome; with one of his good friends Maury Noble. Then
in 1912, his Grandfather (Adam Patch) became sick, and he returned
back to America. He got an apartment along Fifty-second Street. His
friends say that he is a very well kept together man. He had a butler
named Bounds that kept the house tidy, served him breakfast, and
made his bed from 8-11 in the morning. At least once a week he went
to see his broker. His income was slightly under seven thousand dollars
a year. His grandfather judged that that sum was sufficient for Anthony.
Every Christmas he usually sent him a five-hundred-dollar bond, which
Anthony usually sold, if possible. He went to visit his Grandfather, and
was late. His grandfather noticed, and made it aware, and it became
awkward. His grandfather asked if he was doing anything, and he said
he was thinking of becoming a writer. Adam asked what was he
thinking of writing about, and he said the Middle Ages. He didnt agree
and then Anthony decided to leave. When he got home he ran the tub
and listened to music and read for a while. Then bathed and got
dressed and as he was slicking his hair back he caught eye on a
beautiful girl in the apartment across from him. He continued getting
ready, then looked at her again and she was standing up. He decided
that she was fat, thirty-five, and undistinguished. ( I dont get this part)
He left for the Ritz-Carlton. He meet with his two friends Maury Noble,
and Dick Caramel. Dick was late as usual, and so Maury and Anthony
started to talk about him until he showed up.
Chapter 2:

A month later and Anthony bumps into Dick on the street. They go out
for eggnog. Dick invites Anthony back to meet his cousin, Gloria.
When they arrive, they meet Mrs. Gilbert, Dicks aunt. Gloria is a party
girl, always going out to dance. They decided to leave. Anthony went
to Maurys house, and they talked. He said that a met an amazing girl.
That she was so young, and that she ate gumdrops. Then he said that
he was Dicks cousin. Anthony was shocked. A month later, Gloria and
Dick came over for tea, and Anthony saw what Maury meant by young,
and beautiful, but still old. He took her on a date, where she talked
about herself. HE talked about how her autobiography would be a
classic. It turns out she is Twenty-two. And Anthony talked about how
he didnt want to do anything. He didnt want to work at a lousy job,
and get bored. He wanted to do something with his life. Then he asked
her if she wanted to anything, and she said that she wants to sleep.
She wants people to do things for her because that makes her
comfortable and safe. Its her world, as long as she is young. Then they
go on more dates but she seems bored, and tired until they go to a
cabaret, and she says that she feels like she belongs there. Then
Anthony says that he is not a realist, and not only the romanticist
preserves the things worth preserving.
Chapter 3:
In the begging Dick goes to the Gilberts, and Mrs. Gilbert and him talk
about how he thinks Anthony is in love with Gloria. And Mrs. Gilbert
goes on and on about how Gloria has never been in a serious
relationship. She would date someone while dating another, and break
their heart when she got tired of them. She mad them miserable. Then
Gloria comes in with two of her friends Muriel Kane, and Rachel Jerryl.
Muriel was very outgoing, and flirty, and Rachel was quiet and shy.
Gloria decided to have a party inviting Rachel, Muriel, Maury, Dick,
Anthony, and Joseph Bloekman. Anthony was with Geraldine Burke and
they were basically having fun with each other. She doesnt drink that
much, and is a good girl. They just talk about his grandfather and then
asks if he will ever marry. He says no, and she insists that he will one
day. He tells her the story of the Chevalier OKeefe. And she just says
that he is crazy. They kiss, and she leaves. Then its party time, and
they all dance and interact Bloekman is very quiet and business like.
He doesnt dance, he just watches. As Anthony and Gloria dance, she
tells him that she wants to go to the drug store to get gum drops
(whats with her and gumdrops) she they walk together, and
unknowingly lock arm and arm. He wants to spend more time with her
and asks to take a taxicab and just ride around. He then kissed her and
she became silent. The car ride was silent and she told him to turn the
taxicab around and head back fast. When they enter her apartment

everyone wonders where they have been and Bloeckman gave him a
stare. Gloria said that she had to ring her mother. When he met with
her again they went for a walk and she didnt seem amused, so
Anthony got annoyed and just started to think. He didnt realize that he
had been walking so fast and that she was a couple feet behind. She
was shocked. No guy has ever done that before; just not realize she
wasnt there. She wanted to go back to the hotel. She invited him to
her room, he asks about Bloekman. She says that he is just a business
friend of her fathers. Then he kisses her again and she says that she
doesnt want that. He apologized and said asked why he couldnt kiss
her and she said that she doesnt want him to. And then he left. He
made a plan to not see her for 6 weeks, and he bumped into her twice.
First they just smiled at each other, and then another the next day. He
was at a bar where he bumped into Bloekman, and they both said hi,
and then Bloekman had to leave, he said he had a date with Mrs.
Gloria. Anthony became fuming, but didnt show it. On the fifth week of
the sixth weeks he called her, and no answer. The next time they met,
she had bobbed her hair. They took a walk to the zoo. Then he wanted
to see her again for a whole day. So on Sunday they were together,
and they kissed and talked, and he said that he loved her. She said
that she was glad. The next morning he called to say Good Morning,
and asked to see her again, and she said tomorrow night. He thought
that that was too far away, and wanted to see her tonight. She said
that she had a date, but she might be able to break it. He said I love
you and she said Im glad. He would knock on her door, and walk in.
She was standing with her eyes wide-opened across the room and let
out a cry (I dont know why yet) and came up to hug him.
Chapter 4:
In this chapter it starts off with Anthony and Gloria talking, and
apparently they are engaged now. (Kind of ironic since Anthony said he
never wanted to get married, and Gloria seemed to not like Anthony.)
They get married, and go on their honeymoon. Gloria never wants to
leave, because its there first place where they were actually together.
When they get back to New York from California, they decided to buy a
car, and try to find a nice house to live in. They drive around, and
Anthony lets Gloria drive, and they get lost. (It seems that F. Scott
Fitzgerald thinks that women are bad drivers, from this book to the
Great Gatsby.) Then she crashed into a fire hydrant and they have to
stop in Marietta for the night. (Ironically) They find a little grey house in
Marietta and buy it. They talk about babies, and their friend come and
visits them. In November they move into Anthonys apartment. They
wanted to go abroad together at the beginning of the year, but Glorias
mother died.

Chapter 5:
They hired a butler for their Marietta house, names Tana. They went
out to the Meriams house, and Anthony seemed to of drunk too much.
Gloria wanted to leave, and so they were at the train station, and
Anthony kept saying he didnt want to leave and that she couldnt
make him this time. She said that she wanted to go home, and he
insisted that they go to the Barness. She said that she would go home
by herself, but he grabbed her arm, until the train passed. She started
to cry. They hired a car to drive them back to Marietta. When they got
back Anthony went to bed. Gloria forgave him, because he was not
sober, and it was forgotten. Then Gloria thought she was pregnant, and
it never really specified whether they kept it or not, Im guessing not,
or maybe she never was pregnant. Then Bloekman and Anthony met
again, and it seemed that they became acquaintances. He comes by
there house, and talks of Gloria being an actress. Few weeks later,
Anthony retuned from New York, and found that Gloria was not home,
she was out with Bloekman. This mad him mad. When the came back,
they said that they wanted to invite him, but he was not home.
Anthony started work, but then quit. They were back at their New York
apartment, and went out and got drunk. When they came back, they
accidentally signed and sent out the papers to rent the Marietta house
again. The summer was very boring, and it involved mostly partying
with Dick, and Maury. One party was pretty wild. They invited a guy
named Hull, and al drunk too much, even the butler. Gloria went to
bed, and this is the confusing part, she kept saying that she felt
pressure in her breasts, and saw Hull in the door way, I dont know if
maybe he was trying to rape her or whatever, but she got up and ran
out, and Anthony ran after her. She eventually stopped at a train
station, and said that she wanted to leave, but he wanted to go with
her, and then maury and dick came, and said that they followed them.
And the all just slept at the train station until five in the morning for the
train. Gloria got on, and the three boys were left alone.
Chapter 6:
At the beginning, and old friend of Anthonys comes by, named
Paramore, and there is a big party. As it turns out, Adam Patch,
Anthonys grandfather comes up to see him, but sees a party full of
drinking, he is a prohibitionist. They moved back to New York, and
Adam Patch came more ill everyday, but still insisted to not see
Anthony. He died, and most of his money is sent to his cousins, and his
butler. Anthony calls up his lawyer to try and get his money. It takes a
long time to find out if they get the money or not. In winter, its just the
usual, drinking, and partying. Bloeckman again comes and asks Gloria
to be an actress. And in April war was declared with Germany. Anthony,

Maury, and Dick send in their applications for officers training camp. A
doctor said that there was something wrong with Anthonys blood
pressure, so he couldnt go. He was drafted early, and the doctor didnt
mention anything about his blood pressure. He told Gloria one night,
that above all he wanted to be killed. (I dont get this)
Chapter 7:
Anthony is in training camp now, and he meets a girl names Dot.
(Basically he cheats on his wife) and she falls in love with him, and he
is promoted to corporal. Gloria and Anthony barely send letter to each
other anymore, but he still loves her. They are about to be sent to
France, but Germany surrenders, and Anthony goes home. He goes to
his apartment, and Gloria isnt there. A Mr. Crawford calls and asks for
Gloria, but he says that he doesnt know where she is, and Mr.
Crawford tells him that she must be at the Armistice party. So he goes
there, and sees her, and they kiss and are happy.
Chapter 8:
It starts off with talking about what Gloria did when Anthony was away.
She was sad and miserable. But then started to go out more, and met
guys, and stuff, until Anthony came home. Anthony tried for a real job,
sells man. It didnt work out very well. He couldnt sell a single thing.
( I wonder why he cant ever do a job right?) Then Gloria became sick,
but got better. And decided that she wanted to be an actress, and
called Bloekman, who changed his name to Black. And so she did a
test run, and waited for feedback, and when she go home, there was a
letter saying that they wanted someone younger to play her part, but
she could play a smaller part. She started to cry.

Chapter 9:
They moved apartments, probably because of low money. Muriel cam
to visit, and Anthony seems to be a drunk now. All depressed, and sad.
He is thirty-two now, and still not working. He just drank, and drank,
and Gloria was miserable. One day Anthony came home and said that
they had no money. That he wen to the bank and he said they had no
money. He started to freak out. He wanted to drink, so he took
whatever change that had, and left to go to the bar. He drank until he
had no money left, and walked around New York. He tried to think of
people to call to ask for money. When he saw Maury across the street.

He was with a woman. He asked to talk to him, but he said that he had
to go. So he was left alone. Then he thought of Bloekman, and called
him up. The messenger said that he was out at a party. So he went to
see him. But instead talked about how he didnt let Gloria become an
actress, and called him a Jew, and so he punched him, a few times. He
was thrown out, and a kind man put him in a taxicab. A few weeks
later, it was finally time to the case to be determined. It would be at 4;
Dick took Gloria out, and said that she would meet him there. But Dot
showed up at his door, and he started to freak out, and told her to
leave. He was so drunk that he forgot to go. And when Gloria and Dick
came back, they found him in his room playing with his stamp
collection. They told him that he had one the case. He was now 30
million dollars richer. He seemed to not care. And in the last two pages,
it was on a cruise boat I am guessing, and it was out of the point of
view a man and a women, saying that that over there is Anthony Patch,
and that he went crazy, because he got his money, but Shuttlesworth,
Adams butler who was supposed to get the money, killed himself. They
were talking about what they thought he was thinking, probably about
his money, but he was thinking about how he did it. All the suffering he
went through, and people telling him to give up, and work, he didnt
give up, he pulled through. Even though all of his friends dont talk to
him, and Gloria as well, he got his money. They also talked about how
the lady (Gloria) was sort of dyed and unclean. I guess that this means
that she lost her beauty. What I dont get is that the whole reason
Anthony did what he did was because he wanted money? I am thinking
that he just wanted to live, and have fun, and I guess be young.
