Strengths of Resource:
The entire program is all visual so non-English
speaking students can still be successful in the
math program.
The program uses interactive, visual animation to
convey math concepts and develop deep math
understanding.
Students initially encounter visual puzzles free of
language or symbols. Once they master the
visual representation, language and symbols are
gradually integrated into the puzzles.
Kids can work at their own pace and the teacher
can monitor their progress within the program.

Information About
Resource

The instructional
software program is a
research-based, visual
approach to teaching and
learning math. ST Math
enables teachers to
reach all students at their
level, and provides
students with the
opportunity to be
successful learners.

Limitations of Resource:
Classrooms need to be able to have enough
computers for students to access the program.
In order to purchase this program, a school
district must buy for two grade levels and can just
buy for individual classes.

Resource Review Matrix: Culturally Responsive Teaching

TESOL/507 Version 1

There are no limitations how far kids can go

within the program. They are not limited to only
work within their grade level if they have
mastered certain concepts.
Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:
Since this program is easy to navigate, especially for nonreaders, kids can independently work in this
program. This program can be implemented during centers or small group time.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:
None
Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
This program can be used as is. This program is easy for elementary school aged students to navigate.
Since it is a nonverbal program, ELL students and nonreader dont need any additional support in order to
be successful in this math program.

materials, free curricular kits,
and a free magazine that is
published twice a year. It also
provides professional
development articles for
teachers to reference.
Strengths of Resource:
Limitations of Resource:
Teaching Tolerance provides activities and classroom The only thing I can think of is that the film kits that are
offered are geared mostly to Grades 6 and up. There
resources for all subjects and grade levels
doesnt seem to be any film kits for grade K-5.
Professional development resources are available to
teachers
The site offers a free weekly newsletter
Film kits are made available with lesson plans to
incorporate into the curriculum
Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:
Teachers can use online resources that are made available (film kits/classroom activities & lesson plans)
Teachers can sign up for the weekly newsletters and the magazine that is published twice a year
Teachers can use the different strategies that the site overs to help promote a more inclusive environment that
promotes learning for all students
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

According to the website, their teaching materials have won two Oscars, an Emmy and more than 20 honors
from the Association of Educational Publishers, including two Golden Lamp Awards, the industry's highest
honor. Scientific surveys demonstrate that our programs help students learn respect for differences and
strengthen teacher practice.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:

The lessons plans that are provided on the site are very detailed and align to the Common Core Standards.
Teachers will have to go through whatever lesson plan they choice to use and adapt it based on the needs of
their students.

Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:
Students can share-read the stories from each country on the smart board or online and have discussions
based on the themes of the stories read
Activities can be incorporated in reading, writing, math, social studies lessons
Teacher can use discussion guides to reinforce what students are learning. This website reinforces students
reading, speaking, and listening skills by being able to recall key details and relate them to their own lives.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

There may be an assumption made by students that generalizes that all children in a particular country are
just like the child they interacted with online.

Not all cultures may be represented in this program that reflects students in your own class. Students
countries who dont use this site may feel that they are not as important as the countries that they may pick
from.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
This site can be used with younger grades because they dont need to know how to read because the site is
narrating. Students that know how to read dont need to worry about navigating the site because its kid
friendly. Kids who are ELL may need extra support using this site. ELL teachers could take some of the
stories that are used on line and translate them into their students native tongue if possible. ELL students
should also listen to the stories read in English so they can hear what it sounds like.

public education.
Strengths of Resource:
Provides resources for addressing multicultural
and diversity issues in the classroom
Resources consists of books, websites, articles
Teacher can access lesson plans, classroom
managements tips, school life articles, teaching
strategy ideas, and get advice and support from
colleagues

Limitations of Resource:
When looking at the multicultural and diversity
resources, there isnt a variety of cultures that are
represented.
When searching for lesson plans its only sorted
by grade and content area. It doesnt seem that
you can search for specific subjects within the
site.

Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:

This site is a resource for educators to use as their own professional development so they can delve deeper
in understanding multicultural and diversity education. Teachers can find a variety of lessons that they can
implement in their grade.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

There isnt a variety of different cultural backgrounds included in the lesson plans and activities. Teachers
may not be able to find specific cultures that they can address and expose their students to within the
classroom.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:

No methods are needed in order for educators to adapt this resource because this site is predominantly
used for educators to continue their own professional development. The only modifications that would be
needed are to the lesson plans. Teachers would need to make adjustments based on the needed and
abilities of their own students.

Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:

Teachers can review the plan of articles they will be receiving and plan units / instruction based on some of

Teachers may need to teach some background content knowledge when reading certain text. Students may
not have the content knowledge in order to fully understand the articles they are reading.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

Provides lots of phonics resources (letter ID &

Limitations of Resource:
There is a subscription fee if educators want to
access more resources.
Once students move out of letter ID letter sounds
and move into the reading aspect, it doesnt
seem that this site focuses on fluency. It seems
to focus on showing kids how to sound out words
but not how to read fluently.

Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:

This site is kids friendly so kids dont need lots of support maneuvering this site. This website could be
something that students can work on during centers.
This site reinforces letter ID and letter sounds. Students who have parents that may not know English, can
use this website at home and still learn their letters and sounds. Non-English speaking parents may not be
able to support their child since they dont know English.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

No biases because this site not only supports pre-readers but also supports ELL students who struggle with
reading (phonics).

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
There are different levels on this site, so teachers would have to assign which part of the site their students

students.
For older students, teachers can assign films for
students to watch outside of the classroom and
complete assignments for those films.
Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:

Students can view film / short video clips within a class period, reflect on the film, and have discussions
whole group or in a small group setting.

Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

Depending on topic addressed in the movie, only one cultural may be represented in that movie (one point
of view).

Feelings of people in the film may be generalized by students to be the feelings of the entire culture
represented in the movie/film.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
Movies / short clips should be previewed by teachers prior to sharing with students. Content may have to be
pre-taught prior to showing videos/movies to students. They may not have enough background knowledge
on the topic prior to viewing the videos.
Pre-teaching vocabulary may be necessary

with 20 songs from
countries around the
world! The song bank
features 20 cards with
lyrics, dance movements
& information about each
country.

Limitations of Resource:
Even though there are 20 countries that are
represented in this box set doesnt mean that you
will be able to address all the different cultural
backgrounds that make up your classroom.
The songs from the countries are sung in English
and not in the language of that specific country.

Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:

This can be incorporated in a music/drama class.
Teachers can also use the poster with the lyrics / information about the country teaching concepts about
print with pre-readers.
Students can work on gross motor skills through the dance moves.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

Students may generalize what cultural music is like for that country based off the one song that is offered on
the CD.

The countries that are represented in this box set is only limited to 20 countries so students may think that

their country of origin is not seen as important if they dont learn about their own country through music.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:

This music box set can be used as a supplement to the curriculum. Since this is geared to PreK-1 school
aged kids, this can be used in addition to the all about me units that seem to be something that is covered
in school with these specific grades.

reading comprehension skills in their native
language just like their English speaking peers.
There are a variety of themes / categories of
bilingual picture books.
There are resources for teachers to use with
bilingual education.
There are bilingual young adult and adult books
to also pick from.
Teachers can search titles of books to find out if
there is also a translated version of the book.
Strategies for Implementation and Evaluation of Each Resource:
These books can be used one on one, small group, or whole class.
These books can be sent home with students to share with their families. Students can read and share
books in their native tongue with their families.
ELL students can read the same books as their English speaking peers and still be able to build their reading
comprehension in their native language.
ELL teachers can read these books with their students in the Spanish version and the students can also hear
the same story in English so they can hear what fluent reading sounds like in English.
Biases and Stereotypes of Resource:

This particular company only has books that are only translated into Spanish. So there is a limitation as to
which cultural groups would benefit from using these books.

Methods for Adapting Each Resource Based on Differentiation of Language and Literacy Levels:
Teachers can differentiate the books by pre-teaching vocabulary by making it kinesthetic. During the read
aloud have the kids act out the vocabulary. This will not only expose students to rich vocabulary but make
them internalize the meaning of the words and help better understand the text.
